The Office of Faculty Affairs works to advance the University’s internationalization goals and support efforts to expand global engagement in the colleges and divisions. As such, OFA is pleased to announce an Internationalization Grant pilot program, which will award up to $5,000 for projects that advance the university’s internationalization agenda as described in SP4.0 and/or the university’s internationalization and global engagement strategy.

Project topics may focus on the following but other proposals are welcome:  

• Integrating global learning into the curriculum and co-curriculum 
• Fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus culture for domestic and international students, staff, and faculty 
• Preparing graduates to work effectively in a diverse society and as global citizens 
• International student, faculty, and staff retention 
• Fostering strategic international partnerships or participation in global consortia which amplify OSU’s global profile and impact 

This is a pilot program for AY2022-23 which will be assessed for impact in spring 2023. If the program is approved to continue, it will become a matching program with home units.

The Office of Faculty Affairs is pleased to announce that we are hosting a second cohort of the Public Voices Fellowship program facilitated by the OpEd Project starting in September 2022. As a reminder, we ran our first cohort through this program in March through August of 2021.

The Public Voices Fellowship program is a prestigious national initiative to change who writes history. It has been piloted at top universities across the country, with the goal of enabling a more diverse set of thinkers to contribute to important public discourse. The fellowship offers an opportunity for mid-career and senior faculty members and administrators to receive training, engage with a prestigious network of journalists, and be part of a professional development cohort centering around public impact and media communications. 

This fellowship is especially timely given the current dialogue on gender, racial, economic and other forms of inequities within our social institutions, and the low representation of women and other underrepresented minorities in the science, engineering and medical professions. 

We would like your help identifying promising participants, thought leaders in their fields, who would be interested in a cohort-based experience that will help them increase their contributions to public discourse. 

1. Our 2022 Public Voices Fellowship cohort is limited to 20 participants. 
2. All academic faculty are eligible to apply, however, this program may be best suited for associate professors and full professors who have developed their academic scholarship and are seeking to expand into public scholarship. 
3. Administrators and professional faculty who have established a track record of scholarship or recognition in their field are also eligible and encouraged to apply. 

The cost for this program is $3,250 per fellow. The Office of Faculty Affairs will provide a 50% match ($1,625 per fellow) for applicants who are selected for these fellowships; the balance of the cost would be supported through academic units or professional development funds. 

If you have individuals in mind who may have interest in this program, please forward names to Bob Mason by Wednesday May 25 and indicate to them that they will need a co-sponsor them if selected for a fellowship. We will be reaching out and inviting applications on an ongoing basis as names are shared. 

The Office of Faculty Affairs will host a Q&A session about the fellowship within the next couple of weeks. Details are forthcoming.

The University of Chicago is now accepting applications for our Discover UChicago program, our annual diversity preview weekend scheduled for October 20-22, 2022. This program is intended for individuals from diverse backgrounds who are planning to apply to graduate school in the fall of 2022 with the intention of matriculating in the fall of 2023. (Our MD/PhD program is also participating, and welcomes applicants who will matriculate the following year.)

This exciting event combines workshops, meetings with UChicago faculty and students, and opportunities to explore our community and the city of Chicago.

Students interested in doctoral programs, as well as master’s programs in the majority of our schools and divisions, are encouraged to apply online by August 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM. Students from underrepresented backgrounds, first generation and low income college students, women in STEM fields, and undocumented students are especially encouraged to apply. NSF and DOE announce partnership for science and engineering research

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy, through its Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 23, 2022, continuing their longstanding partnership for collaboration on scientific and engineering research to bolster national energy policy.

The Memorandum of Understanding enables additional cooperation between the two agencies where mutually beneficial opportunities emerge. NSF and DOE EERE often have complementary roles in fostering U.S. research and innovation, and together they advance discoveries from the laboratory bench to commercial implementation.

“NSF’s clean-energy investments create broad new understanding and innovations with the potential to increase energy efficiency, enhance sustainability, mitigate climate change, or lead to other societal benefits,” said Susan Margulies, NSF assistant director for Engineering. “We look forward to partnering with the Department of Energy to speed the translation of these advances for the benefit of the nation and a clean energy future.”

Should you be applying for NIH funding? It might be easier than you think.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) fund research and development that might help improve human health – not just in biology and medicine, but also in computation, robotics & AI, education, engineering, physical sciences, and other areas.

The May 10^th Research Office Campus Conversation (ROCC) is intended to demystify NIH for OSU researchers. We will learn from members of the OSU faculty about their experiences finding, applying for, and managing NIH-funded research – and how it complements their work with other agencies, such as NSF. Join us to learn about giving NIH funding a try for your own work, and meeting others you might partner with along the way.

Have you wondered what NOAA research priorities are? Have you wondered what funding opportunities are available from NOAA? Have you wondered how best to translate your research interests into competitive NOAA proposals?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) funds research in many areas of strength at OSU in ocean and climate sciences, often requiring transdisciplinary collaborations to discover holistic solutions, involving the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. 

The June 3^rd Research Office Campus Conversation (ROCC) is intended to demystify NOAA for OSU researchers. We will hear from members of the OSU faculty who have deep experience with NOAA research, and a NOAA program officer to gain insights into the NOAA research landscape and funding pathways. We will also discuss ways to develop and strengthen your proposals to NOAA.

This Friday, a group of writing center consultants will describe assignment features that writers often finding confusing, as well as assignment features that help students understand their writing tasks, and that support their work as writers. After the panelists share their perspectives, there will be time for attendees to ask consultants questions about these observations or other aspects of their work.
