Research towards development of technologies with the potential to enhance global sustainability requires creative and interdisciplinary science and engineering. Sustainable Technologies assist in the delivery of the “ambitious and transformational vision” embodied in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations in 2015. These include targets for economic growth and poverty alleviation, as well as environmental protection. We are therefore seeking applications with research interests in a range of scientific areas in sustainable technologies.
Examples that align with current research priorities include:
- Sustainable manufacturing technologies using renewable resources and industrial biotechnology, e.g. exploitation of biomass via biocatalysis, or production of novel functional materials delivering the performance of oil-based polymers yet compatible with the tenets of the circular economy
- Transformational technologies for the sustainable exploitation of scarce water and energy resources
- Systems/means of measuring and quantifying sustainability gains and the flows of energy and materials in an increasingly circular economy
