CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the
National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC
works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether
diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate
attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection,
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic
and selected infectious diseases. Within DLS, the Protein Biomarker and Lipids Reference Laboratories in the
Clinical Chemistry Branch supports this through performing research on biomarkers to detect human exposure
to environmental chemicals and to diagnose and treat chronic diseases, as well as through the Clinical
Harmonization program to improve the quality and reliability of diagnostic tests for priority clinical analytes.
This fellowship will provide the selected fellow the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human
exposure research and laboratory medicine. This includes operating state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and
procedures, performing quality assurance tasks, and processing and evaluating complex laboratory data.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, training opportunities during the fellowship may
Preparation of biological samples to quantify biomarkers of human exposure or establish reference values
according to established laboratory procedures
Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass
spectrometry, and automated liquid handling instrumentation
Data processing and analysis using complex software and data evaluation procedures
Develop written documentation that clearly and accurately documents laboratory procedures, instrument
operation, experimental results, troubleshooting and remedial actions
Perform tasks in compliance with policies and regulations such as those outlined in the Clinical Laboratory
Improvement Amendment (CLIA) or International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

The Office of Faculty Affairs is pleased to announce that we are hosting a second cohort of the Public Voices Fellowship program facilitated by the OpEd Project starting in September 2022. As a reminder, we ran our first cohort through this program in March through August of 2021.
The Public Voices Fellowship program is a prestigious national initiative to change who writes history. It has been piloted at top universities across the country, with the goal of enabling a more diverse set of thinkers to contribute to important public discourse. The fellowship offers an opportunity for mid-career and senior faculty members and administrators to receive training, engage with a prestigious network of journalists, and be part of a professional development cohort centering around public impact and media communications.
This fellowship is especially timely given the current dialogue on gender, racial, economic and other forms of inequities within our social institutions, and the low representation of women and other underrepresented minorities in the science, engineering and medical professions.
We would like your help identifying promising participants, thought leaders in their fields, who would be interested in a cohort-based experience that will help them increase their contributions to public discourse.
- Our 2022 Public Voices Fellowship cohort is limited to 20 participants.
- All academic faculty are eligible to apply, however, this program may be best suited for associate professors and full professors who have developed their academic scholarship and are seeking to expand into public scholarship.
- Administrators and professional faculty who have established a track record of scholarship or recognition in their field are also eligible and encouraged to apply.
The cost for this program is $3,250 per fellow. The Office of Faculty Affairs will provide a 50% match ($1,625 per fellow) for applicants who are selected for these fellowships; the balance of the cost would be supported through academic units or professional development funds.
If you have individuals in mind who may have interest in this program, please forward names to Bob Mason by Wednesday May 25 and indicate to them that they will need a co-sponsor them if selected for a fellowship. We will be reaching out and inviting applications on an ongoing basis as names are shared.
The Office of Faculty Affairs will host a Q&A session about the fellowship within the next couple of weeks. Details are forthcoming.
The University of Chicago is now accepting applications for our Discover UChicago program, our annual diversity preview weekend scheduled for October 20-22, 2022. This program is intended for individuals from diverse backgrounds who are planning to apply to graduate school in the fall of 2022 with the intention of matriculating in the fall of 2023. Notice of Available Ph.D. Position Starting September 2022
The Oregon State University Biodeterioration Laboratory is seeking a Ph.D. student to perform research into the environmental impacts of creosote. The project will employ a combination of environmental monitoring, lab-based experimentation and modelling to both measure and enable predictions of the impacts of creosote-treated wood on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The student will gain extensive experience using GC-MS to quantify polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental samples. In addition, the student will be expected to develop a lab-scale leaching test to measure PAH migration rates from creosote-treated commodities. Finally, the student will be expected to develop excel-based predictive models to predict environmental PAH concentrations resulting from the presence of creosote-treated commodities in specific environments. A typical Ph.D. program in this field will run for four successive years.

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy, through its Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 23, 2022, continuing their longstanding partnership for collaboration on scientific and engineering research to bolster national energy policy.
The Memorandum of Understanding enables additional cooperation between the two agencies where mutually beneficial opportunities emerge. NSF and DOE EERE often have complementary roles in fostering U.S. research and innovation, and together they advance discoveries from the laboratory bench to commercial implementation.
“NSF’s clean-energy investments create broad new understanding and innovations with the potential to increase energy efficiency, enhance sustainability, mitigate climate change, or lead to other societal benefits,” said Susan Margulies, NSF assistant director for Engineering. “We look forward to partnering with the Department of Energy to speed the translation of these advances for the benefit of the nation and a clean energy future.”
