Physical/Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University (OSU) seeks to fill a Tenure-Track faculty position starting in Fall 2023 at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking candidates who are interested in developing innovative interdisciplinary research programs (bridging two or more disciplines in chemistry) with emphasis on overcoming challenges related to human health, renewable energy, and the environment. Preference will be given to candidates who can take advantage of existing university-wide facilities including the NMR facility, Mass Spectrometry center, X-ray Crystallography center, Electron Microscopy facility, and the Continuous Flow Reactor facility. The proposed research program should demonstrate proficiency or significant potential to garner national and international recognition with sustainable external grants.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Physical Chemistry and/or Organic Chemistry, broadly defined. Primary Purpose: The Department of Chemistry at Idaho State University invites
applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Visiting Assistant
Professor beginning August 14, 2022. The candidate should possess a Ph.D. or ABD in
Chemistry or Biochemistry. The successful candidate will have primary teaching
responsibility in lower level chemistry courses and secondary teaching responsibility in
the candidate’s field of expertise. Teaching experience at a university level is a plus.
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The position includes

Key Responsibilities: The primary responsibility will be teaching but depending on the
candidate’s qualification collaborative research activities can be part of the responsibility.
For this position, the teaching responsibilities will include lower level chemistry courses

position can be renewed up to 3 years.

Notice of Available Ph.D. Position Starting September 2022

The Oregon State University Biodeterioration Laboratory is seeking a Ph.D. student to perform research into the environmental impacts of creosote. The project will employ a combination of environmental monitoring, lab-based experimentation and modelling to both measure and enable predictions of the impacts of creosote-treated wood on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The student will gain extensive experience using GC-MS to quantify polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental samples. In addition, the student will be expected to develop a lab-scale leaching test to measure PAH migration rates from creosote-treated commodities. Finally, the student will be expected to develop excel-based predictive models to predict environmental PAH concentrations resulting from the presence of creosote-treated commodities in specific environments. A typical Ph.D. program in this field will run for four successive years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in wood science, environmental chemistry, ecological engineering or related field

Exceptional performance in a bachelor’s degree program in the above disciplines

  • Experience working in an environmental chemistry laboratory
  • Experience making models in Excel

Synthetic Biology and Interfacial Catalysis

A postdoctoral research position is available in the Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington DC (http://www.nrl.navy.mil/).  This position is at the interface of biology and materials and focuses on creating new biocataltyic enzyme-based nanomaterials with emergent properties.

NRL is the Department of Defense’s (DoDs) corporate laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps. The Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering works at the interface of materials, chemistry, biology, biophysics and materials science to solve critical problems of importance to the Navy and DoD.

Project Description:  When enzymes are displayed at a nanoparticle interface in a controlled and homogeneous manner, in many cases they display substantially enhanced catalytic activity. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms by which enzyme activity is altered and enhanced at this nanoparticle interface and learning how to exploit this in the context of synthetic biology. We are particularly interested in designing and assembling totally artificial enzyme-based biosynthetic pathways on nanoparticles in vitro where the overall catalytic flux through the system can be expected to be greatly enhanced by what appears to be channeling behavior.  This approach represents an important and complementary way of achieving biocatalysis for use synthetic biology that is still extremely underutilized.

Candidates desired experience to include a PhD in a related biological discipline such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or microbiology with some combination of experience in cloning and recombinant DNA technology, enzymatic assays, fluorescence, bacterial-eukaryotic cell expression and analysis, biosensing, and synthetic biology. Experience with nanoparticles/nanomaterials and FRET are a plus.

The Stewardship Science Academic Alliances (SSAA) program is a grant program under the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) that aims to safely and effectively manage the United States’ nuclear weapons stockpile and fund research relating to the nuclear sciences. These funding opportunities help maintain national security and contribute to long-term nonproliferation goals.

Dr. Walter Loveland, Emeritus professor in the Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University, is the recent awardee of a 3 year SSAA contract for $441,000. Dr. Loveland is well known in the field of nuclear chemistry, and much of his research focuses on fusion reactions used to synthesize superheavy elements and the neutron induced fission processes of radioactive elements.

This SSAA contract will help provide actinide samples to measure the total kinetic energy release in the fast neutron induced fission of several selected nuclei, such as Americium-241, Americium-243, and Curium-248. The total kinetic energy release is an important metric as it constitutes most of the energy produced during fission, and so this work will give us insight into the energetics and interactions inside certain fission reactions.
