I know that some groups have gotten reminders recently regarding the required FERPA form for letters of recommendation. It is probably a good reminder for all of us. Note that these regulations are cover currently registered OSU students.

FERPA releases are MANDATORY for writing letters of recommendation for students. The mandatory FERPA form is attached and must be completed by the student.  These can be kept within a departments central office for general use, in NOLIJ with the students records, and or by an individual.

It is also against FERPA policy to communicate official OSU business with students via personal email addresses, as personal email is not sufficiently secure to protect students’ information.

General FERPA Federal policies can be found at: http://registrar.oregonstate.edu/privacy-records

OSU MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences), is currently seeking donations of ‘lightly used’ professional business attire for our 13th annual Career Wardrobe event, which will be held Feb. 8, 2018 in the MU Ballroom open to all OSU students. The annual Career Wardrobe event helps all OSU students prepare for the winter term career fairs and supports student members attending the MANRRS National Conference. Current donation drop off locations are 158 or 147 Strand Agricultural Hall (STAG) and OSU Career Development Center located at B008 Kerr on campus. The Beaver Store in Portland is also a donation center which is located at 538 SW 6th Ave.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has invited OSU to submit up to 2 nominees as candidates for the Moore Inventor Fellowship.  The focus of the fellowship is on early stage invention that will “create new tools, technologies, processes, or approaches with a high potential to accelerate progress in the foundation’s three main areas of interest: scientific research, environmental conservation and patient care.” This is a great opportunity for an early-career inventor at OSU, with the fellowship providing $600,000 to the fellow and $75,000 to OSU for administrative overhead over 3 years.  In addition, GBMF requires that OSU commit $150,000 ($50,000 per year for 3 years) to support the fellow’s research.  To apply, click on this LINK(http://research.oregonstate.edu/office-research-development/program/gordon-and-betty-moore-foundation-moore-inventor-fellows). Email contact– research.development@oregonstate.edu

Calling early career researchers to apply for Prize Fellowship in Sustainable Technologies at University of Bath

Title: Prize Fellowship in Sustainable Technologies

Salary: Starting from £39,992, rising to £47,722

Closing Date: Sunday 31 December 2017

Apply: https://www.bath.ac.uk/jobs/Vacancy.aspx?ref=SF5354

We’re looking for early career researchers with the potential to become research leaders.

Our Prize Fellowship Scheme will nurture your research career and fast-track you to a permanent appointment at Bath. This managed scheme offers you a supportive environment to pursue top-level research and reach your potential as a future academic leader in your field.

Research towards development of technologies with the potential to enhance global sustainability requires creative and interdisciplinary science and engineering. Sustainable Technologies assist in the delivery of the “ambitious and transformational vision” embodied in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations in 2015. These include targets for economic growth and poverty alleviation, as well as environmental protection. We are therefore seeking applications with research interests in a range of scientific areas in sustainable technologies.

Examples that align with current research priorities include:

  • Sustainable manufacturing technologies using renewable resources and industrial biotechnology, e.g. exploitation of biomass via biocatalysis, or production of novel functional materials delivering the performance of oil-based polymers yet compatible with the tenets of the circular economy
  • Transformational technologies for the sustainable exploitation of scarce water and energy resources
  • Systems/means of measuring and quantifying sustainability gains and the flows of energy and materials in an increasingly circular economy

See more details and check if you’re eligible for the scheme:http://www.bath.ac.uk/campaigns/university-of-bath-prize-fellowships/

We would like to inform you of several internships that may be of interest to your students.  All are part of the ONAMI Graduate Internships in Startups program.  The internships are with Element 1 Corp., NANO3D Systems, LLC., Valliscor, LLC., Energy Storage Systems (ESS Tech, Inc.), Diatomix, Inc., and Inpria Corporation.

The ONAMI Graduate Internships are open to graduate students who are currently working with ONAMI Member Researchers, or who have completed their MS or PhD within the last year.  The position descriptions for all of theinternships are attached.  Please share these opportunities with your students who may be interested and qualified.

Interested students should send their resume and cover letter to:

Please copy Cindy Dahl (cdahl@onami.us) on submissions.

About ONAMI Graduate Internships in Startups:

ONAMI Graduate Internships in Startups (GIST) Program:  ONAMI will fund internships for qualified grad students or recent graduates at ONAMI portfolio companies for 6-9 months.  This is a great opportunity for a student to determine if the startup environment is an attractive career option. Experience to date has proven the internships beneficial to both company and student.

When a match is found (this is determined by the student and company), ONAMI will enter into an agreement with the company, and the student will become a company employee or contractor.  ONAMI will fund the internship at the rate of $25/hour, paid to the company.  The company will provide the intern with salary (at least $25/hour), supervision, training, materials and mentorship.   (Any additional compensation or benefits are the option of the company.)  ONAMI will fund the company up front for half of the internship.  Brief (non-confidential) monthly reports from the student, as well as a mid-term review by both company and student will determine if the internship will proceed. At that point, ONAMI will fund the remainder of the internship.

We look forward to hearing from students interested in the internships.

Cindy
