To support a healthier community, OSU is hosting two Flu Shot and COVID Vaccine Clinics this fall for faculty, staff and students on the Corvallis campus. Fred Meyer will offer the FluBlok Trivalent vaccine and the 2024-2025 COVID vaccine (Pfizer’s Comirnaty or Moderna’s Spikevax, depending on product availability). Vaccines are first-come, first-serve, with limited COVID availability.
Clinic Dates and Location
Fred Meyer pharmacy staff will assist. The process should take under 10 minutes if participants complete the online form process, including the insurance section and active pharmacy billing information. Fred Meyer recommends waiting on-site for 15 to 30 minutes following vaccination.
Insurance Information
Participants must bring their insurance cards to their appointments. Fred Meyer accepts most insurance carriers, except Express Scripts, ESI, or Cigna, or subsidiaries or partners of Cigna/Express Scripts.

I am writing to invite you to attend the 2024 New Student Convocation ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Gill Coliseum.
Convocation is a vital part of OSUWelcome 2024, a set of activities and events to help incoming Corvallis and Ecampus students connect with the university and kick off their college education. The event also recognizes students studying at OSU-Cascades and through our partnership with Eastern Oregon University, and OSU-Cascades holds a separate convocation ceremony for students joining the Bend campus.
Convocation serves as the official induction of new undergraduate students into the OSU academic and social community and is designed to mirror many aspects of Commencement. At its heart, Convocation is about formally introducing new students to the faculty and staff of Oregon State University and inspiring them to aim high in pursuing their academic goals. Your attendance emphasizes to students that they are being welcomed into a larger community working together in research, education and public engagement. This year’s event will include a welcome by President Jayathi Y. Murthy and remarks from ASOSU President Audrey Schlotter.
Students will assemble with their respective colleges in the Memorial Union Quad at 2:15 p.m., and then process to Gill Coliseum at 3:00 p.m. The Convocation Ceremony will be held in Gill Coliseum at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony will be streamed on live.oregonstate.edu.
We encourage you to remind students to participate and walk with them to the MU Quad at 2:15 p.m. to gather. You are welcome to join other faculty, staff, and returning students lined up along 26th Street to cheer on students during the processional.
You do not need to RSVP to attend Convocation. The platform party will be wearing regalia and, although not required, we invite faculty to do so as well.

A consumer goods company is looking for innovative solutions that address ingrown hairs. The primary focus is on finding faster alternatives to current treatment methods. They are open to all application methods, including topical, oral, and other novel approaches. The ideal solution should offer quick and effective relief from the symptoms of ingrown hairs while also preventing their occurrence. Selected applicants will be provided funding, company data, expertise, and have access to the company’s facilities and services. The deadline to apply is September 30th. Private Company: Non-odorous topical formulations for hair removal
A consumer goods company is seeking innovative solutions to develop the next-generation hair removal topical formulation that eliminates the unpleasant odor associated with current depilatory products. Specifically, they are looking for an alternative to thioglycolic acid that is both effective and non-malodorous. As an alternative, they are also interested in technologies for odor control that can mask the unpleasant smell inherent in current depilatory products, which becomes more pronounced during the hair removal process. Ideally, this new active compound or formulation should be easy to use, allowing users to apply it and continue with their activities without discomfort or lingering odors. It would also ideally offer an added skin care benefit, such as moisturization or soothing. Tata Steel: Air quality and noise reduction in an industrial laboratory
Tata Steel is looking to collaborate with global experts to explore solutions to reduce noise levels (<60 dB) and contain fugitive emissions for easier collection and removal. Private Company: Material and process improvements for eliminating metal particulates in fibre drum production
A manufacturing company is looking for technologies to either modify the materials used for chimes or to improve or replace the methods of production, such as precurling/hemming and mechanical crimping, to help eliminate the production of debris in the manufacturing process or prevent the debris from entering into the packaging. Up to $100,000 USD in funding provided in increments based on the achievement of specific milestones and progress checkpoints.The deadline to apply is September 30th. Corteva: Scalable and cost-effective mono-hydroxylation of relevant process chemistry building blocks
Corteva is seeking short, non-confidential proposals that describe a plan for a scalable, selective and cost-effective process for mono-hydroxylation of readily synthetic building blocks (visual is included on project call page). Proposals should include: 1) Detailed method or plan on how we can develop and implement the process ; 2) Relevant literature or industrial application references; 3) A high-level cost estimate; and 4) A proposed development timeline. Submissions should exclude any proprietary and confidential information such as specific reagents, process conditions, specific enzymes and/or sequences. Up to $100,000 USD in funding is available, inclusive of indirect costs. There are opportunities for extended collaboration and additional funding if successful. Historically, the Mid-Willamette Valley has offered few networking or community-building opportunities for professionals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), professionals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA2S+ professionals. However, this event is open to anyone wishing to form community and connections. ALL are welcome! In 2022, the ACS launched the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future to advance chemistry innovations in addressing the challenges articulated in the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (U.N. SDGs). This multifaceted initiative will have lasting impacts on how we conduct research, how we teach chemistry, and how we collaborate globally. One of the key initiatives of the Campaign is the Sustainable Futures Initiative Grant Program (SFIGP) which provides catalytic funding for early and mid-career faculty interested in developing a research and teaching portfolio that contributes directly to developing transformative chemistries that address the U.N. SDGs.
In our inaugural 2023 competition, $1 million in funding was awarded in two grant competitions administered through the SFIGP:
The SFIGP aims for high-impact research, with a commitment to enhancing green chemistry and engineering education. Over $1 million in funding will be available for the 2024 competition. Submission for applications opened on July 15, 2024 and will close on September 20, 2024.

The Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to invite nominations of worthy candidates for the Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest. This award recognizes a chemist for outstanding achievement in scientific and technical work that contributes to the public well-being. The award consists of a $5000 prize and a medal of recognition. The presentation takes place at an award ceremony in April at Harvard University, followed by a formal address by the awardee. The tentative date for this ceremony is April 10, 2025.
The award was established in 1987 to honor the memory of Gustavus John Esselen, a distinguished scientist, entrepreneur and member of the Northeastern Section. The first awardees were F. Sherwood Rowland and Mario J. Molina, who subsequently received the Nobel Prize. Since then, several Esselen Award recipients have also been Nobel laureates and many have been recipients of the most prestigious awards in their various fields.
Please note: any field of chemistry or affiliation is appropriate for nomination. The primary consideration of the committee is that the scientific work has been an important contribution to the public well-being and that the work’s significant value to society has become apparent within the last five years or so.
This letter is to seek nominations of colleagues whose work meets the criteria and purpose of the award. The enclosed brochure provides more detail on the nature of the award, a list of previous awardees as well as the criteria and procedure for nominations.
