Keck Foundation’s Interests for Its Research Grants 

For science/engineering projects and medical research projects, the Keck Foundation seeks to support projects likely to lead to new models or breakthroughs in fundamental science, engineering, and medical science. (The Keck Foundation is not interested in applied science.) 

A successful Keck Foundation proposal in either category could lead to the creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation that facilitates observations and the science of the previously unobservable, or discovery of knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives and paradigms. Proposals should provide new and transformative answers or approaches to underlying questions in fundamental science and should address issues that seem unsolvable, unattainable, or intractable. 

The Keck Foundation funds proposals that are necessarily high-risk projects that push the edge of the field(s) and present unconventional approaches to intransient problems. The Keck Foundation does not fund projects that represent the “next logical step” in research or applied research. The Keck Foundation also prefers projects that do not qualify for funding from—or, better yet, have been previously rejected by—federal agencies, such as NSF and NIH, due to the proposed project’s high-risk nature. 

The ideal concept paper would attest to a previous federal agency’s declination due to the high-risk nature of the proposal in spite of high reviewer scores in federal agency proposal submissions. Successful proposals should hold promise of a significant breakthrough or new discovery in science, engineering, or medical research.

The Cottrell Scholar Award (CSA) is available to early career faculty at U.S. and Canadian research universities and primarily undergraduate institutions. Eligible applicants are tenure-track faculty who hold primary or courtesy appointments in chemistry, physics, or astronomy departments that offer bachelor’s and/or graduate degrees in the applicant’s discipline.

For the 2024 proposal cycle, eligibility is limited to faculty members who started their first tenure-track appointment anytime in calendar year 2021. CSA proposals contain a research plan, an educational plan, and a clear statement on how the applicant will become an outstanding teacher-scholar with strong academic citizenship skills. Proposal plans must be for a period of three years. The ability of applicants to mount a strong and innovative research program, achieve excellence in education, and develop effective academic citizenship skills are key criteria in the selection process.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of International Affairs (IA), Office of Multilateral Climate and Clean Energy Engagement seeks motivated candidates to take on today’s pressing climate challenges through a fellowship with its DOE Science, Technology, and Policy (STP) Program. Specifically, this fellowship will focus on the challenges of industrial decarbonization through the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM). The CEM is a multilateral organization with 29 member countries, including the United States, working to rapidly increase the deployment of clean energy technologies.

This fellowship may support the development and harmonization of low- and near-zero emission intensity thresholds for steel, cement and concrete as well as reporting practices. It may also involve research and policy analysis under other U.S.-involved CEM initiatives. Qualifications in this subject area are desired (see below).

A fellowship in IA will give you the opportunity to apply scientific, technical, and policy knowledge to the development and implementation of international climate and clean energy solutions as well as to continue your education and involvement in areas that support the DOE mission.

Successful fellows come from a wide range of backgrounds, but education, experience, and/or demonstrated interest in the following subject areas is desirable: 

• Carbon accounting, environmental impact assessment, or product performance assessment, preferably with an analytic focus
• Steel, cement, and concrete production processes and understanding of major emissions sources in these processes
• Product life cycle assessments
• Product Category Rules and Environmental Product Declarations
• Reading and interpreting technical standards
• Data handling

Benefits: Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by IA.  Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  IA may authorize a supplemental stipend to offset the costs of health insurance.  Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance plans offered through ORISE.  Participants may receive an allowance for education and/or scientific activities as approved by IA.
