The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2017 Solicitation 2. Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Thursday, November 16, 2017.
Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at:https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.
The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.
The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE laboratories/facilities. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory/facility during the award period.
The Office of Science expects to make approximately 50 awards in 2017 Solicitation 2, for project periods beginning anytime between June 4, 2018 and October 1, 2018.
Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 250 graduate awardees from more than 100 different universities to conduct thesis research at 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation.
The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories/facilities, and program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).
For any questions, please contact sc.scgsr@science.doe.gov.

OSU students are returning to classes for the fall term and are beginning to move into their homes for the upcoming year. The 4th annual Community Welcome makes it easy to start the new school year off on a friendly note. OSU has produced materials to start a conversation with student neighbors and will be canvasing neighborhoods on September 24 in celebration of National Good Neighbor Day. Please visit the volunteer registration site for more information –http://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d0f2ib4u3jOtNOt
“Land use” has a direct impact on how you experience the place you call “home” – including the type of housing, businesses, and amenities near where you live, work, and play. The City of Corvallis is launching a series of community workshops in September to gather input on land use needs, challenges, and opportunities. We hope OSU faculty and staff will share their opinions by joining an upcoming community conversation or participating in an online survey. Please visit the website for more information –

Dear Department Chair:
The department of chemistry at Smith College has initiated a search for a tenure-track, full-time Assistant or Associate Professor of Chemistry position to begin July 2018. The successful candidate will regularly teach advanced inorganic chemistry as well as general chemistry and may also teach electives and other courses aligning with their area of expertise. Candidates with expertise in any subfield of inorganic chemistry are encouraged to apply. Additional relevant experience may include postdoctoral research or college-level teaching. A Ph.D. in Chemistry is expected by the time of appointment.
We seek a colleague engaged in learning, developing, and maintaining a dynamic curriculum that is responsive to the needs of Smith’s diverse and talented student body. The Department of Chemistry has state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation, and its faculty is dedicated to active research programs with undergraduate students. The successful candidate is expected to establish an active research program with undergraduate student participation.
Smith College is the largest independent women’s college in the country and is a member of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts.
We are very interested in having a strong pool of candidates, especially those from under-represented groups. We ask for your help in identifying any potential candidates that you may see fitting our criteria. We are including a copy of an advertisement soon to appear in Chemical & Engineering News. We really appreciate you taking the time to consider this request and/or to pass the information along to eligible candidates.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Jamieson, Ph.D.

Colleagues,
The OSU Experience site was launched about a year ago to provide students with a comprehensive website that highlights co-curricular and support services across campus. From experiential learning programs, to civic engagement opportunities, to living-learning communities, the site features a broad range of paths for students to engage and find meaning. This is also a tool for you when working with students — feel free to contact me if you would like promotional materials about the website to display in your student spaces.
The site has recently expanded to include a section for faculty and staff. This section provides information on how you can connect with students beyond the classroom. As we gear up for the new academic year, visit this section to find ways that you can impact students’ co-curricular experiences in meaningful ways.
