Undergraduate of the Quarter - Spring 2012
Undergraduate of the Quarter – Spring 2012

Sam Bartlett has been selected as an undergrad chem major of the quarter for Spring 2012.  Sam was born in Sunnyside, WA but was raised in Lake Oswego, OR until 4th grade when he moved to Corvallis.  He attended Crescent Valley High School.  Sam picked OSU because of its strong reputation, the in-state tuition costs and wanting to stay close to home.  He initially was a biology major, but the first term of Organic Chemistry from Dr. Daniel Myles showed him that his real interests were in Chemistry.  Sam cites Prof. Carter (for CH 336) and his current advisor, Chris Beaudry (for his instruction in CH 471 and CH 535) as his two favorite professors.    Sam has conducted extensive undergraduate research during his time at OSU. In fact, Sam and Professor Beaudry have published a paper on his research in the Journal of Organic Chemistry – a major accomplishment for an undergraduate student.  Sam is very grateful for this experience – particularly commenting that Professor Beaudry’s insights were valuable and he is very grateful for his help in getting into grad school.   Sam has really enjoyed the community in the Department – feeling that it is like a close knit family.   Sam will be starting graduate school this summer in Organic Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Professor Jeff Johnson.  UNC-Chapel Hill is regarded as one of the top programs in his field and we congratulate Sam on all his accomplishments to date.  It is students like Sam that make OSU Chemistry as strong as it is today!!

To the OSU Community:

I am pleased to inform you that I have appointed Dr. Thomas Maness as the Cheryl Ramberg & Allyn C. Ford Deanship of Forestry and Director of the Oregon Forest Research Laboratory effective August 1, 2012.

Dr. Maness is professor of Forest Economics and Policy and Head of the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry.  He is responsible for the professional forest management and engineering degree programs. Since joining OSU in 2009, he has spearheaded the development of the College’s new Professional School and Conservation Management Program.

Dr. Maness earned his Bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from West Virginia University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1979.  He earned his MS in Forest Operations at Virginia Tech in 1981, and afterwards worked for Weyerhaeuser Company where he served as a forest engineer in the Klamath Falls region, developed strategic forest-planning models in corporate R&D, designed and installed advanced manufacturing optimization systems for west coast sawmills, and conducted financial analysis for large-scale capital projects.  In 1989 Thomas earned his doctorate in Forest Economics from the University of Washington and joined the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia.

In addition to leading the College of Forestry, Dr. Maness will work  in collaboration with the Deans of Agricultural Sciences and Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences to advance the science of sustainable Earth ecosystems as part of the Division of Earth Systems Science.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Maness on his new role, and again acknowledging Dr. Hal Salwasser for his many years of excellence in leadership as Dean of Forestry. We are fortunate that Dr. Salwasser has elected to remain at Oregon State University as a Professor in the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society.

I have attached our press release regarding Dr. Maness’ appointment.

6-29-12 New Dean of Forestry

Dear College of Science Colleagues,

I would like to provide a quick update regarding the search for Dean of Science. The search committee is in the process of scheduling our kick off meeting for mid-July. We anticipate our focused recruitment strategy will be in place through mid-September and we plan to conduct airport interviews with semi-finalists at the start of October. We are currently targeting mid- to late-October for campus interviews, with an appointment date of January 1, 2013. As you know, search timelines change as the search evolves, and you will receive updates as the search progresses.

Questions may be directed to me or to Gigi Bruce, Special Assistant to the Provost, at any time during the search process. I hope you are enjoying your summer.

New Student Programs & Family Outreach is collaborating with our campus partners to welcome new students at START – OSU’s summer advising, registration and orientation program. Students attend START to meet with an academic advisor, register for fall term classes, attend workshops on a variety of topics, meet current students and staff, and learn about campus resources. This summer orientation program aids in the transition process of OSU’s new students. A parent/family orientation program runs concurrently.

Please note that START dates this year are as follows:

  • Monday, June 25 – Tuesday, June 26 – First-year START
  • Thursday, June 28 – Friday, June 29   – First-year START
  • Monday, July 2 – Transfer START
  • Sunday, July 8 – Monday, July 9 – First-year START
  • Wednesday, July 11 – Transfer START
  • Thursday, July 12-Friday, July 13 – First-year START
  • Monday, July 16 – Friday, July 17- First-Year START
  • Thursday, July 19- Friday, July 20 – First- Year START
  • Sunday, July 22-Monday, July 23 – First-year START
  • Wednesday, July 25 – Transfer START
  • Thursday, July 26 – Friday, July 27 – First-year START
  • Monday, August 27-Tuesday, August 28 – First-year START
  • Wednesday , August 29 – Transfer START

You will notice an increased amount of people on campus during these days and traffic to your department/office could increase. Usually our 2-day orientation program for first-year students involves about 800 participants (students and their family members). Our 1-day transfer sessions see about 375 participants.

Student unable to participate in START will be invited to attend new student orientation in September.

If you would like more information about OSU’s new student programming and/or START, please visit our web site: www.oregonstate.edu/newstudents . We are always looking for campus-wide participation in our programs. If you would like to be involved in any aspect please contact me.

Thank you in advance for your help in creating a welcoming environment for our new students.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just another reminder about the new online proposal submission service – Cayuse.  The site is live and several faculty have already been submitting proposals via this method but everyone will be required to use this system as of July 1, 2012.
Cayuse’s production system is found at http://oregonstate.cayuse424.com.  The system is under Single Sign-on, and you will use your ONID username (all lower case) and your ONID password to access the website.
For those of you that have not had a chance to attend a training session,  I have scheduled some additional “anyone can join” sessions to give everyone a chance to get familiar with the system prior to their first proposal submission &/or to ask specific questions if they have had a chance to play around a bit.  I have also added an extra training session to go over the addition of subawards to your projects as this can be a bit tricky.
The next general training sessions are scheduled for –
  • Thursday, 5/31 @ 1:30 PM
  • Wednesday, 6/13 @ 10 AM
  • Monday, 6/25 @ 2:30 PM
Special session – Managing subawards in Cayuse (best if you have already used Cayuse &/or have been to a general training session)
  • Tuesday, 6/5 @ 2 PM
All sessions will be held in Peavy 236 which is supplied with computers to make it an interactive training session.  Please share the information with your faculty and have them contact me if they are interested (as space is limited).
Thank you,
Liz
