Limited Submission Funding Opportunity: NSF-NG NNIN 2013
The Research Office, Incentive Programs is requesting letters of intent for the NSF – Next-Generation National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NG NNIN) program.

The NNIN will reach its ten year authorized award life at the end of Fiscal Year 2013. The NSF is announcing in this solicitation an open competition to establish a Next-Generation National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NG NNIN) for Fiscal Years 2014-2018.
NNIN has enabled major discoveries, innovations, and contributions to education and commerce within all disciplines of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through NSF support of a national network of university-based user facilities. These facilities have provided open access to leading-edge nanotechnology fabrication and characterization tools, instrumentation, and expertise for users across the nation from academia, small and large industry, and government. The core mission of NNIN has included national-level education and outreach programs to enable a diverse science and engineering workforce, the study of societal and ethical implications of nanotechnology including issues of environment, health, and safety, as well as important modeling and simulation capabilities. The new competition of the NG NNIN will build on the concept of NNIN with a much broadened scope and user base.

Clifford G Shull Fellowship Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), http://neutrons.ornl.gov, invites applications for the Clifford G. Shull Fellowship Program. This postdoctoral Fellowship Program, named for the 1994 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, is aimed at attracting outstanding early career researchers to continue on a path of scientific excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S Department of Energy missions and goals. The Shull Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering that utilize neutron techniques and/or advance neutron science including the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Shull Fellows carry out and develop research programs to enhance the knowledge of the structure and/or dynamical behavior of biological, engineering, soft or hard condensed matter materials using neutron scattering as a primary tool; educate and promote the use of neutron scattering to new user communities; publish research results in scientific journals; and assist Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor scientists in the development of new instrumentation to meet research program goals. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months.
Qualifications Required
A PhD. in condensed matter physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, biology, or related field is required. Each applicant must be no more than three years beyond receiving their doctorate degree. Applicants should not have previously held more than one postdoctoral appointment. Current ORNL postdoctoral appointees and staff members cannot be considered as valid applicants. Previous experience in neutron or X-ray scattering is highly desired; however, outstanding candidates possessing related expertise are also encouraged to apply. Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a significant publication record, and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Applicants should have a PhD degree conferred on or after January 2010.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities: NIST-SURF
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) – Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is soliciting applications from eligible colleges and universities located in the U.S. and its territories, nominating undergraduate students to participate in the NIST – SURF Gaithersburg or Boulder Programs. The programs will provide research opportunities for undergraduate students to work with internationally known NIST scientists, to expose them to cutting-edge research, and to promote the pursuit of graduate degrees in science and engineering.
Applications consist of two parts: (1) The student’s university must submit a grant proposal that provides details about its academic program and must nominate one or more students; (2) Students must provide copies of their transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent or personal statement.

$100,000 Seet Grants/Grand Challenges Canada Funding
My name is Ken Simiyu, a Program Officer at Grand Challenges Canada which is funded by the Government of Canada.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know of Round 5 of our Stars program, which is a funding opportunity that may interest your colleagues. Applicants apply for $100,000 seed grants which can later be scaled with a grant of up to $ 1,000,000.
In Round 3 of our program we received about 300 applications from all over the world and selected 68. Round 4 results will be released in January but we anticipate awarding between 70-100 grants out of the 450 that applied.
The deadline for application for Round 5 is February 6, 2013.
The application process is extremely simple. It consists of a two-page concept with a two-minute video.
