Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry 2012 Funding Opportunity

Funding: $120,000 over two years

Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry applications should describe innovative fundamental research in the chemical sciences or engineering related to the environment. Examples include but are not limited to the chemistry associated with: the climate, the atmosphere, aquatic or marine settings, toxicology, soil or groundwater. Also of interest are chemistry-related energy research (renewable sources, sequestration, etc.), and new or green approaches to chemical synthesis and processing, with a clearly stated relation to the environment.

Attached is a list of some additional funding opportunities that have been released this month.  Please forward along to those who may be interested and have them contact me if they have any questions.  Remind staff to contact me if they are interested in organizing brainstorming sessions over given opportunities.

Also as a reminder, all proposal submissions will need to go through the new online proposal submission service, Cayuse, as of July 1, 2012.  The site is live and several faculty have already been submitting proposals via this method but I would like to encourage more faculty to take this step sooner than later.

I do have several training sessions scheduled and will continue to offer more up through the calendar year –

• Tuesday, April 10^th from 1:30 – 3 PM
• Wednesday, April 25^th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM
• Either Tuesday, May 1^st or Wednesday May 2^nd during the 2012 O&E Professional Development Days (specifics TBD)
• Monday, May 14^th from 2:00 – 3:30 PM

With exception of the Professional Development Days, all sessions will be held in RH 203 which is supplied with computers to make it an interactive training session.  Please share the information with your faculty and have them contact me if they are interested (as space is limited).

The research office has also been offering training sessions which have been posted in OSU Today.

Attached is an announcement for an informational meeting on fuel cycle options. The meeting is to be held at Argonne National Laboratory on April 25. DOE is seeking input from participants knowledgeable in nuclear fuel cycles, particularly those from universities, industry and national laboratories.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) 2013 Investigator Competition

I am pleased to share with you the news that Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is holding a national competition to select new HHMI investigators from among our country’s top scientists. We invite researchers who investigate significant biological problems in all of the biomedical disciplines as well as adjacent fields of biophysics, chemical biology, biomedical engineering, and computational biology to submit an application. Plant scientists, experimental evolutionary biologists, and patient-oriented researchers are welcome to apply to this general competition.

Your institution is one of the approximately 200 across the nation whose faculty members are eligible to participate in this open competition. Eligible candidates may apply directly without an institutional nomination. There are no limits on the number of applicants or awardees from any eligible institution. We ask that you encourage relevant faculty to apply.

HHMI expects to appoint between 20 and 30 new investigators. Eligibility for the competition must be established no later than May 1, 2012. The deadline for submission of all application materials is June 13, 2012, at 3:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Complete information about the application process and eligibility requirements for this competition may be found at www.hhmi.org/inv2013.

In brief, at the time of application deadline, the applicant must:

• Have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. (or the equivalent).

• Hold a tenured or tenure-track position as assistant professor or higher academic rank at one of the eligible U.S. institutions.

• Have between 5 and 15 years of experience since appointment as an assistant professor or equivalent position.

• Be the principal investigator on at least one active, national peer-reviewed research awards of at least three years duration.

The HHMI review process will include evaluation of applications by distinguished scientists, leading to the selection of semifinalists by early 2013. Institutions whose applicants are selected will be notified and will be asked to confirm that the candidate’s status at the institution meets all eligibility requirements. Following further review, finalists will be selected in April 2013, with appointments to begin as early as September 1, 2013. Institutions with finalists, who have not previously hosted an HHMI investigator, will be invited to enter into a collaborative agreement with HHMI.

HHMI welcomes applications from outstanding women and minorities under-represented in the biomedical sciences. 2012 University Club Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Deadline for nominations:  April 13, 2012 – 5PM

The Graduate School is pleased to announce the 2012 University Club Foundation Graduate Fellowship Program to recognize and encourage scholarship, demonstrated leadership, and potential societal contributions by students pursuing graduate education in Oregon. The annual graduate fellowship valued at $5,000 will be awarded to successful nominees from Oregon State University, Portland State University, University of Oregon, and Willamette University.

Nominees must be full-time graduate students in Fall 2012 in a program leading to an advanced degree. Nominees must have at least one more academic year remaining before completion of their graduate studies. The award may be used at the discretion of the recipient to cover tuition or expenses. Nominees must show evidence of academic accomplishment and leadership qualities, as well as current and potential contributions to the community and society.  Nominees should enjoy the high regard and respect of their supervising faculty.  Immediate relatives of members and staff of the University Club are not eligible as candidates.

David Gilley from Micromeritics will be here for training on the newly installed ASAP2020 on 4/4, 4/5.

The plan now is to begin training for physisorption method on 4/4 at 10 AM. It will likely go on most of the day. Chemisorption mode training will follow, for those interested, probably continuing on 4/5.

The instrument and training are in LPSC 262.

Please let me know if you (or someone from your group) plans to attend all or part, so I can get an approximate headcount.

Position Title: Lecturer

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago invites applications for a non-tenure track appointment from outstanding individuals for the position of Lecturer that will carry responsibility for directing a program in collaborative teaching and for teaching of general chemistry courses. The position is to begin July 1, 2012, or later. Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry and must have teaching experience at a university or college. The length of the initial term may be for up to 3 years depending on the availability of funding. Experience teaching General Chemistry is required, and experience in collaborative teaching techniques is important.
