The Clery Act also requires universities to redistribute annual security reports when crime statistics are revised. The 2022 crime statistics disclosed in the 2023 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for the Corvallis campus have been updated and this report is being redistributed to ensure the campus community has the most up-to-date numbers. While reviewing university conduct records, it was discovered that the location of a 2022 crime report was mistakenly classified as off-campus when the incident occurred in an on-campus student housing facility on the Corvallis campus. After further review, 1 on-campus student housing facility fondling has been added to the 2022 crime statistics for the Corvallis campus. Here is a link to the updated report:

Join other OSU faculty, staff and students in the Great Oregon Shake Out!

At 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17, join the rest of Oregon and the nation and Drop, Cover, and Hold-On for 60 seconds to simulate the response to an earthquake.  A text and email from the OSU Alert system will start the drill, and after a minute, the drill is completed.

Participation is voluntary but encouraged.  In previous years, several campus classes and organizations have:

  • Made participation a small group class project, to include a 5-minute research presentation.
  • Made a class project to have students, wherever they are, encourage those around them to Drop, Cover, Hold-On (proof provided by videotaping the activity).
  • Prepared informational materials for staff/faculty/students.

As part of the monthly OSU Emergency Preparedness Learning sessions, October’s fact sheet will review the response to earthquakes and other preparedness points – Great talking tips to present on Oct. 17, right before the Drop, Cover, and Hold-On event!

There will be a PowerPoint sent on Monday, Oct. 14, that can be used in offices and classrooms to introduce the earthquake drill.  It even has a 60-second timer to help run the drill.

If you participate, please complete our Qualtrics Survey https://beav.es/p85 or send a count of participants to OSU Emergency Preparedness (emergency@oregonstate.edu) so we can update the OSU participation tally on the Shake Out website.

Additional information and the PowerPoint about the Shake Out can be found at:

Background:

Oregon is subjected to earthquakes daily, but the largest event forecasted has yet to occur within our lifetime.  The Cascadia Subduction zone (CSZ) earthquake is forecasted to be a 9.0 or higher and to last for 5-7 minutes, followed by a 30-50 foot tsunami at the coast.

Response to earthquakes is simple but important for everyone to perform correctly and automatically.  When the shaking is felt, drop low to the ground, seek overhead cover to protect yourself from falling debris and hold on to the cover so it does not move away from you.  When the shaking has stopped, cautiously exit the building, watching for falling objects.

For more CSZ and earthquake information, please refer to these websites:

September 30, 2024, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Please join us for a presentation on the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MPS-Ascend) program followed by Q&As. Those who are preparing to submit a proposal for this program in October 2024 are particularly encouraged to attend. The identity of the attendees will not be made public at the webinar to maintain the confidentiality of the potential applicants.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am writing to invite you to attend the 2024 New Student Convocation ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Gill Coliseum.

Convocation is a vital part of OSUWelcome 2024, a set of activities and events to help incoming Corvallis and Ecampus students connect with the university and kick off their college education. The event also recognizes students studying at OSU-Cascades and through our partnership with Eastern Oregon University, and OSU-Cascades holds a separate convocation ceremony for students joining the Bend campus.

Convocation serves as the official induction of new undergraduate students into the OSU academic and social community and is designed to mirror many aspects of Commencement. At its heart, Convocation is about formally introducing new students to the faculty and staff of Oregon State University and inspiring them to aim high in pursuing their academic goals. Your attendance emphasizes to students that they are being welcomed into a larger community working together in research, education and public engagement. This year’s event will include a welcome by President Jayathi Y. Murthy and remarks from ASOSU President Audrey Schlotter.

Students will assemble with their respective colleges in the Memorial Union Quad at 2:15 p.m., and then process to Gill Coliseum at 3:00 p.m. The Convocation Ceremony will be held in Gill Coliseum at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony will be streamed on live.oregonstate.edu

We encourage you to remind students to participate and walk with them to the MU Quad at 2:15 p.m. to gather. You are welcome to join other faculty, staff, and returning students lined up along 26th Street to cheer on students during the processional.

You do not need to RSVP to attend Convocation. The platform party will be wearing regalia and, although not required, we invite faculty to do so as well.

If you have any questions regarding this event, please email the Office of the Provost

I look forward to seeing you at Convocation.

Edward Feser

Provost and Executive Vice President

I’m reaching out regarding these five active industry partnership opportunities that have received less than 10 applications from researchers. Given the low application number, these calls are likely to increase the chance that your researchers would have in securing a partnership and funding.

Could you kindly share these with anyone at your university who may have an interest in applying?

Private CompanyFast-acting treatments for ingrown hair prevention and relief

A consumer goods company is looking for innovative solutions that address ingrown hairs. The primary focus is on finding faster alternatives to current treatment methods. They are open to all application methods, including topical, oral, and other novel approaches. The ideal solution should offer quick and effective relief from the symptoms of ingrown hairs while also preventing their occurrence. The College of Science Proposal Support Services will hold an in person meet and greet / office hours on Thursday 9/19/24 from 9am-12pm in the Kidder Conference room (128).

Please drop in and meet our new Proposal coordinators, Chris Suffridge and Ginny Clary. This is an opportunity to meet them in person as Ginny will be in town. We want to get to know you and hear about your current and planned research programs so that we can best support you.

In 2022, the ACS launched the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future to advance chemistry innovations in addressing the challenges articulated in the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (U.N. SDGs). This multifaceted initiative will have lasting impacts on how we conduct research, how we teach chemistry, and how we collaborate globally. One of the key initiatives of the Campaign is the Sustainable Futures Initiative Grant Program (SFIGP) which provides catalytic funding for early and mid-career faculty interested in developing a research and teaching portfolio that contributes directly to developing transformative chemistries that address the U.N. SDGs.

In our inaugural 2023 competition, $1 million in funding was awarded in two grant competitions administered through the SFIGP:

  1. Early Career Postdoctoral-Faculty Bridge Grant – $125,000 in funding for an early career researcher to hire a postdoctoral fellow (PDF), who, together, can launch a new research lab in green chemistry and engineering. The competition is open to current PDFs with aspirations for a career in academia, and to professors within the first nine months of a faculty position. Applicants of both types must come from U.S. Ph.D.-granting universities.
  2. Principal Investigator Development in Sustainability Grant – $50,000 in funding to a professor at a U.S. Ph.D.-granting university to conduct their sabbatical leave at a private company, a national laboratory, or an academic laboratory in a different institution, with the goal of establishing robust collaborations across industry-academia or across disciplines.

The SFIGP aims for high-impact research, with a commitment to enhancing green chemistry and engineering education. Over $1 million in funding will be available for the 2024 competition. Submission for applications opened on July 15, 2024 and will close on September 20, 2024.

Note: You can apply for both the PRF grants and the grants within the SFIGP. For more information, please contact sustainabilitygrants@acs.org .  Please do not hesitate to forward this email to colleagues.
