Residents of Gilbert Hall and perhaps elsewhere,

I am aware of the excessive heat in Gilbert Hall.  Since I’m the focal point for facilities issues I know that the problem is not confined to specific rooms but is a systemic problem as I’ve received messages from all floors and all wings within the Building.

I’ve contacted Facilities and Campus Environmental Controls.  The situation is the University Campus wide control system; Unity, is down.  Facilities have been working trying to get this system repaired.  When the Unity System went down, it left the buildings in their last state.  For us, it was heat on.  This means we are gaining radiant heat from the steam pipes 24/7 whether or not an individual room’s thermostat is on or off.

To minimize the impact of Unity being down, Campus Environmental Controls will be manually turning the building heat on every workday morning and; turning it off every workday evening.  This will minimize the accumulation of heat within the building.

This also means that weekends and Holiday’s the building will be cooler than work days.

I will keep you posted on any further developments.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Rusty

This is the 7th year of the Staff Art Exhibit, and we’re hoping for representation from all parts of OSU in this showcase of creativity.  Do you have creative individuals in your area (maybe even you)?  Most any medium is accepted in this exhibit, so please encourage submissions of work by November 29.

The benefits, besides showing talent beyond the day-to-day job, are that departments are listed on the artist’s block next to the work, and all artists, co-workers and friends are invited to a special reception hosted by President Ray on December 20.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this project, and I hope that you might be able to encourage participation in this activity.

Best wishes,

~Mealoha

Greetings science communication enthusiasts and advocates,

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) has recently launched a program, the OMSI Science Communication Fellowship, that I wanted to let you know about. OMSI Science Communication Fellows are industry or academic researchers or science professionals, including faculty, graduate students, technicians, or other individuals in science, engineering, health, or technology related positions. After participating in a science communication “short course,” Fellows are certified by OMSI as current science ambassadors and skilled communicators. Fellows join OMSI in helping public audiences engage with science by engaging museum visitors in hands-on activities that represent their own work at the twice-monthly Meet a Scientist program.

We are excited to announce that in partnership with Oregon State University (OSU), the Spring 2017 Cohort of the Science Communication Fellowship will be held primarily on the OSU campus.  A participant schedule of commitments for the spring cohort, online application, and information about tuition and scholarships is posted at https://www.omsi.edu/science-fellowship. We are mostly recruiting for these cohorts through word-of-mouth, so I would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word to any of your contacts who might be interested in participating.

Amanda Fisher, OMSI’s Science Communication Fellowship Program Coordinator, is leading this effort and would be more than happy to talk with you or your contacts further about the program. We also often work with researchers to incorporate this program into broader impact plans for NSF grant proposals.  If you are interested in pursuing this option, or would like to invite us to facilitate a brownbag or webinar session with your lab group or department on broader impact proposal collaborations, please get in touch with her directly. Her email is afisher@omsi.edu, and direct line is 503-797-4635.

Corvallis faculty, staff and students,
We are writing to provide a public health reminder as an Oregon State University Corvallis student is being treated at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for meningococcal disease.

This disease is not highly contagious and is transmitted through direct contact with a person who is ill with meningococcal disease. This could include contact with droplets from coughing or sneezing; other discharges from the nose or throat; or by sharing eating and drinking utensils, smoking devices; or intimate contact.

Benton County health officials say customarily individuals at risk of catching meningococcal disease have spent at least four hours cumulatively in close, face-to-face association with a person suffering from the disease within seven days before the illness started.

Symptoms of the disease include high fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal discomfort, and stiff neck. Some people do not get meningitis, but they contract an infection of the bloodstream, which causes high fever and a rash. This rash develops rapidly and usually appears on the armpits, groin and ankles, as well as in areas where elastic pressure is applied.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, please immediately visit your primary care physician, OSU Student Health Services, or a nearby urgent care medical clinic or emergency room.

The best way to prevent meningococcal disease is by vaccination.

More information on meningococcal disease is available by calling the OSU Student Health Services Nurse Advice line at 541-737-2724 or Benton County Health Department communicable disease nurses at 541-766-6835 or by visiting these websites:
