Dear Colleagues – 

Thank you for your attention and care to campus operations during the COVID-19 response and beyond. As we continue to gear up for winter term, I wanted to share an update on the discontinuance of servicing trashcans in individual offices and cubicles on the Corvallis campus. On Aug. 26, 2020, we notified employees that trash cans will no longer serviced in private offices and cubicles to allow custodial staff to perform daily deep cleaning measures to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Employees were directed to use larger trashcans in lunchrooms, breakrooms and other common spaces to dispose their trash. 

This change to trashcans operations will continue indefinitely. By choosing to not provide plastic trash can liners, the university has realized savings in multiple areas. These savings have been diverted to expanding custodial operations. In addition, the reduction in plastic waste due to not providing trashcan liners aligns with the university’s sustainability efforts. The time saved not emptying trash cans has allowed custodians to focus more of their efforts on disinfecting high touchpoint areas like elevator buttons and doorknobs.  It has also helped the university reduce its carbon footprint.

If desired, we will begin removing trashcans over the next few weeks. Please set your can outside the office door in the hallway if you would like for us to remove it.   Going forward, employees can choose to keep their existing can or provide a personal trash can in their office or cubicle. In keeping with our sustainability goals, no trashcan liners or trash emptying service will be provided by custodial staff.

Any employee with accessibility concerns regarding this change should contact the Office of Equal Opportunity & Access to inquire about an accommodation. Reasonable exceptions to the trashcan services are made on an as-needed basis; email facilities@oregonstate.edu to request an exception.

Dear OSU community members,

This is a reminder about the upcoming data center move scheduled for December 20-22, 2024. The move will start early, before business hours, on Friday, December 20, and be complete by the end of the day Sunday, December 22.

What does this mean for you?
A service outage for certain services and applications is required. You will not be able to access impacted services and applications until the move is completed and systems are back online. Critical services such as Microsoft 365, Banner, and OSU login will remain available, but many core services will be unavailable, including:

• CORE (core.oregonstate.edu) 
• Jaspersoft 
• Print servers (network printers) 
• Department shared drives 
• Mailman (lists.oregonstate.edu) 

This outage may affect anyone who is working during the service outage, as well as any network-connected equipment used for research or monitoring.

What should you do?
Please plan to complete any activities involving the impacted services before the outage window begins to avoid disruptions. Move any necessary files from shared drives to your local computer or Microsoft OneDrive before Friday morning.

This is a friendly reminder to help us recognize the outstanding work of our instructional and research faculty and administrative staff by nominating them for an award. We will celebrate the winners at our winter awards celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The deadline to nominate 2025 award recipients has been extended to January 7, 2025. 

Submissions are invited for one or more of the following awards for colleagues who demonstrate excellence teaching, service, administration or research. 

Please take a moment and nominate one of your College of Science colleagues for any of the following awards:

• Fred Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching Science for a faculty member who demonstrated exceptional instructional qualities and has had a significant impact on students for at least five years. 
• Distinguished Service Award for a person or group that went above and beyond what was expected.
• Gladys Valley Award for Exemplary Administrative Support for a staff member who has demonstrated outstanding job performance and dedication to your department or the College of Science.
• Inclusive Excellence Award, recognizing the outstanding work of a faculty, staff  or student in the college who is advancing inclusive excellence. 
• Dean’s Early Career Achievement Award, recognizing exceptional achievement in research and education by an early-career, tenure-track faculty member.
• F.A. Gilfillan Award for distinguished scholarship and scientific accomplishments.
• Milton Harris Award in Basic Research in Science for exceptional achievement in basic research, especially for recent research at OSU that will have significant impact.
• Outstanding Faculty Research Assistant or Associate Award to recognize research assistants or associates with a career of outstanding job performance and contributions.

They accept unused deodorant, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, mouthwash, toilet paper, tissues, menstrual products and other hygiene items. Drop off items at 1030 SW Madison Ave. between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
