Graduate, Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 – $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience.  Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000.  These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S.  Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.

There are four annual review cycles.

New Opportunities from the ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Office

1.  ACS Graduate Education Advisory Board (GEAB) seeks information on IDPs

2.  Nationally connected Chemistry Graduate Student Organizations (CGSO)

ACS has been working with graduate students to build a framework for the creation of a nationally connected body of chemistry graduate student organizations, one that ACS can support. If you are a governing member of a CGSO (or postdoctoral group) at your department, please join the national CGSO group by completing a simple online form: http://bit.ly/1c67mG3

3.  Postdoc to Faculty workshop, www.acs.org/p2f

For postdocs (only) who are planning to apply for chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering faculty positions. The top 4 applications from women postdocs will be awarded the Dan Su Travel Award, valued at $2,000.

Deadline: April 21, 2014

When: August 8 – 9, 2014

Where: San Francisco, CA (just prior to, and in conjunction with the ACS fall national meeting).

4.  Academic Employment Initiative (AEI) poster session, www.acs.org/aei

Any senior graduate student or postdoc who is interested in applying for faculty positions, and who submits a valid abstract by the deadline, is welcome to participate in this event.

Deadline: March 31, 2014

When: 8 – 10 PM Monday, August 11, 2014

Where: San Francisco, CA (SciMix at the fall national meeting)

5.  Host a career workshop for graduate students and postdocs at your department, www.acs.org/gradworkshop

Workshops can be tailored to meet the needs of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

When: Any time of the year, given at least one month’s notice.

Where: At your department.

Chemistry students!

Some of the graduate students have rallied together and started an initiative with YOU in mind.

Strong, long-lasting mentorship, as well as personal and professional empowerment are two key pillars of successful individuals. OSU’s Chemistry Undergraduate Mentoring and Empowerment (OSU-ChUME) Initiative is here to help you achieve these two pillars.

OSU-ChUME will help you foster professional long-lasting relationships between you and graduate/professional chemistry students.

OSU-ChUME is also dedicated to empowering you with all the tools necessary to stay on top of the chemistry field.

We invite you to our inaugural meet-and-greet: 5pm on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Gilbert 324. In this meet-and-greet, you will get to know the growing list of graduate student mentors (& start forming these professional relationships!). We will also talk about all the opportunities this initiative plans on providing to you. Of course, light refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to meeting you and beginning this journey!

WAGS/UMI Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award

The Graduate School invites your program’s participation in a campus-based competition for selection of OSU’s nominee for the 2013-14 WAGS/UMI Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award.

This award recognizes distinguished scholarly achievement at the master’s level. Nominations will be accepted in any discipline in which the institution offers a master’s degree. A nominee must have earned the master’s degree within the period of July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013.

This prestigious regional competition is an important opportunity for OSU to showcase the scholarly excellence of our master’s students to institutions throughout the western region and to celebrate our success. We encourage you to take the time to prepare a nomination.

OSU ELIGIBLE PROGRAMS:  Any discipline in which a master’s degree is offered.

OSU AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:  The Graduate School will provide a cash award of $500 to the student selected as OSU’s nominee for the Western Association of Graduate Schools/UMI Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award.  In addition, the Graduate School will award $500 to the graduate department/program that submits the thesis selected as OSU’s nominee for the Western Association of Graduate Schools/UMI Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award.

PROCEDURES:  Each graduate program may submit only one nomination for consideration. Graduate programs must provide in one electronic PDF file items b, c, d as reflected in the attached WAGS/UMI guidelines. Please refer to the full announcement for complete details.

NOMINATION DEADLINE:  To facilitate the internal selection process, please submit all nomination materials to the Graduate School by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013 to the following e-mail address: Graduate.Scholarships@oregonstate.edu – subject line should read NAME_DEPT_ WAGSDistThesisAward_2013-2014.
