Angela Davis to be Keynote Speaker at 39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Jan. 28, 2021
Greetings Oregon State community members—
I am pleased to announce that Angela Davis—American political activist, philosopher, academic and author—will be the keynote speaker at the 39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 18, 2021. Through her activism and scholarship over many decades, Angela Davis has been deeply involved in movements for social justice around the world. Her work as an educator has always emphasized the importance of building communities to support the struggle for economic, racial and gender justice.
The 2021 Celebration will be an online-only event, and the Celebration and Keynote on January 18 will be via Zoom. Registration for the free event is now open.
In addition to the keynote, the Celebration will include presentation of the Legacy Awards. Nominations for the 2021 Legacy Awards are now open; please submit nominations by Friday, December 11, 2020.
We encourage departments and organizations across the university to host events that reflect, celebrate and educate on the legacy of Dr. King. Events can be submitted to the Office of Institutional Diversity by Friday, December 11, 2020.

As a past donor to the OSU Family Resource Center’s Kid’s Gift Closet, we are reaching out in hopes of stocking our closet for the coming winter holidays. As you know, the Kid’s Gift Closet is a long-standing initiative helping students provide gifts for their children during holidays/celebrations and is dependent on donors like you, from all over OSU, who donate toys, books, clothing, etc. While we generally accept gifts in person, this year’s gift drive will look different. Organic Chemist Tenure Track Position at Idaho State University

It is an exciting time to join the Department of Chemistry at Idaho State University, which has been enjoying steady improvement in almost every aspect of its operations. The Department is well equipped with modern experimental and analytical instrumentation, including a brand new 400 MHz NMR spectrometer we are looking forward to installing later this fall. We are an ACS-accredited department with 12 full-time faculty and 6 staff members who are dedicated to quality undergraduate education and research. The department also offers a unique BS/MS program as well as a standard MS degree. We are located in a modern chemistry building with separate spacious research laboratories for each faculty member. There are collaboration opportunities internally with colleagues in Biology and Pharmacy or externally with scientists at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the Center for Advances Energy Studies (CAES).
The department maintains a very collegial and collaborative culture among faculty, staff, and students, and our students overwhelmingly find the department one of the most inviting places on campus. Finally, we are located in southeastern Idaho with ample opportunities for outdoor activities where a new faculty member can sustain a healthy worklife
balance.

2021 American Chemical Society IRES Application Now Open
On behalf of the American Chemical Society Global Outreach Team, it is my pleasure to announce the opening of the application window for the 2021 International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program.
The ACS IRES program is seeking applications from qualified U.S. undergraduate students to explore chemistry and chemical engineering lab research in an international setting. ACS has partnered with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to place U.S. students at German research labs from May-August 2021 (final research dates are determined between selected students at the host lab). This is a unique research opportunity for U.S. undergraduate sciences students to experience international research cooperation at its heart and developing their cross-cultural communication skills-a critical professional skill for researchers.
Selected students will receive a generous per diem stipend, housing allowance, round-trip economy class airfare to/from Germany, and health insurance while abroad. Additionally, students will participate (and receive financial support to attend) in the 2021 DAAD Heidelberg Forum and the 2022 ACS Spring Meeting in San Diego, California. A full list of program details, including financial allowances, eligibility and application instructions can be found here. This program is generously supported through the NSF Office of International Science & Engineering.

Faculty Conversations with President King Alexander
President King Alexander and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee will continue the long-standing tradition of sponsoring small group faculty conversations (academic, research and professional faculty). Each conversation will be facilitated by a Faculty Senate Executive Committee member and will consist of up to 12 faculty. These conversations, via Zoom, provide an opportunity for President Alexander to receive candid feedback from faculty and an occasion for idea and information exchange; faculty are encouraged to speak freely. DOE Scholars Program – Now Accepting Applications
The DOE Scholars Program introduces students and recent college graduates to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) mission and operations.
Being selected as a DOE Scholar offers the following benefits:
· Stipends starting at $600 per week for undergraduates and $650 per week for graduate students and post graduates during the internship period
· Limited travel reimbursement to/from assigned location
· Direct exposure to and participation in projects and activities in DOE mission-relevant research areas
· Identification of career goals and opportunities
· Development of professional networks with leading scientists and subject matter experts
Eligibility
· Be a U.S. citizen.
· Be an undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate of an accredited institution of higher education.
· Must be pursuing a degree or have received a degree within 5 years of their starting date in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or field that supports the DOE mission.
