2022 Ole Miss Chemistry Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Program: The Ole Miss Chemistry Department seeks applicants for an NSF-funded summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in 2022. Students who have completed their freshman year of college and who will not have graduated as of Fall 2022 can participate fully in “Ole Miss Physical Chemistry Summer Research Program” activities and work on a research project under the direction of a faculty mentor. Student participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, a housing and meal plan for ten weeks, and travel assistance.
Eligibility: Undergraduate student participants must have completed their freshmen year of college but not yet graduated, and must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Underrepresented groups in science are strongly encouraged to apply, including minorities, women, and first-generation college students.

Function/Duties of Position
The key responsibilities and duties include performing analytical chemistry studies for research and development of radiopharmaceutical including injection into
humans. This includes development, writing and revising standard operating procedures based on ICH, FDA, and USP guidelines, maintenance and calibration of
analytical instrumentation in the lab including but not limited to GC-MS, UPLC-MS, HPLC , U V and visible spectrometer machines, independently developing new
analytical methods for the assessment and study of new compounds, and performing purity and identity testing on standards and precursors used in radiochemistry
experiments in the lab and responsibility for certifying their purity for use in synthesis.
Duties for this position also include overall laboratory maintenance, radioactivity surveying in the cyclotron vault space, as well as general tasks around maintaining
the laboratory spaces. Lastly, this position also involves statistical analysis of generated research data, including organization and analysis of stack monitoring data.
Required Qualifications
PhD in relevant field and 1 year of relevant experience, OR Master’s Degree in relevant field and
5 years of relevant experience, OR Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field and 9 years of relevant experience
Relevant working experience as an analytical chemist performing Quality Control testing including using HPLC / MS and GC analysis of solvents
Experience with good laboratory practices and following current good manufacturing rules
Ability to do data analysis using statistical methods as well as graphing and facility with Excel spreadsheets
Ability to work with exponentials and logarithms and have experience with typical analytical chemistry statistical methods and graphing methods
Expertise in HPLC, TLC and GLC analysis
Ability to work around large amounts of radiation and to work gowned and masked in a clean room
Preferred Qualifications
PhD or Master’s Degree in relevant field
Extensive experience in analytical chemistry, quality control and using HPLC, Mass Spectrometry, and GC analysis
Minimum 2-3 years of experience working in Analytical Chemistry in a production or high volume research environment
Experience in use of and analysis with Mass spectrometry
Experience working with positron emitting radionuclides, remote and automate systems, computer work with excel and graphical programs

Now accepting applications for summer 2022!

The Repperger Research Intern Program is a 10-week educational experience, providing summer research opportunities for college students at an Air Force research facility under the mentorship of an Air Force scientist. The program posthumously honors Dr. Daniel W. Repperger, who mentored many young people during his 35-year research career with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
Eligibility
Applicants need to meet the following eligibility criteria at the time of application:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution of higher education during the 2021-2022 academic year. Applicants must provide proof of enrollment during the Fall 2021 term at the time of application. Candidates selected for an internship appointment will be required to provide proof of enrollment during Spring 2022 at the time appointment is accepted. Please note, preference will be given to applicants who intend to be a student in the Fall of 2022.
- Be pursuing a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher on a 4.00 scale as of Fall 2021.
