The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), http://neutrons.ornl.gov, invites applications for the Clifford G. Shull Fellowship Program. This postdoctoral Fellowship Program, named for the 1994 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, is aimed at attracting outstanding early career researchers to continue on a path of scientific excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S Department of Energy missions and goals. The Shull Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering that utilize neutron techniques and/or advance neutron science including the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Shull Fellows carry out and develop research programs to enhance the knowledge of the structure and/or dynamical behavior of biological, engineering, soft or hard condensed matter materials using neutron scattering as a primary tool; educate and promote the use of neutron scattering to new user communities; publish research results in scientific journals; and assist Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor scientists in the development of new instrumentation to meet research program goals. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months.

Qualifications Required

A PhD. in condensed matter physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, biology, or related field is required. Each applicant must be no more than three years beyond receiving their doctorate degree. Applicants should not have previously held more than one postdoctoral appointment. Current ORNL postdoctoral appointees and staff members cannot be considered as valid applicants. Previous experience in neutron or X-ray scattering is highly desired; however, outstanding candidates possessing related expertise are also encouraged to apply. Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a significant publication record, and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Applicants should have a PhD degree conferred on or after January 2010.
