The Department of Chemistry at the University of Portland invites applicants for an Instructor position to begin August 15, 2021. Primary teaching responsibilities will consist of three organic chemistry courses (laboratory and lecture) per semester. The successful candidate will also have administrative responsibilities to coordinate the organic chemistry laboratory courses, which includes curriculum development, supervision of laboratory preparation, ordering chemicals and supplies, compliance with waste disposal regulations, and hiring and supervision of adjunct instructors and student teaching assistants.

I wanted to reach out to advertise a Toxicology intern position we have open at HP. I see that you are listed in the EMT directory as program administrative support, so you may have a better point of contact you can point me towards. Would you or someone within the department be able spearhead distributing this opportunity though the EMT network? 

My personal view is that this would be a great paid opportunity for well qualified undergraduates to learn and develop the skill sets required of a regulatory toxicologist in a corporate environment. This is a very interesting field with career opportunities that are not highlighted effectively in the department. One project will involve the analysis of test data across 18 toxicological endpoints to evaluate known and unknown risk for candidate chemicals to be used in new products using the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals method (a very interesting project).

I realize that the timing of the holidays and finals may complicate getting the word out but interested students should apply quickly as we are looking to close the process in January.

We are looking for 

·       An active student in 3rd year or above, pursuing their bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry or Toxicology.  The ideal candidate is one that is on track to graduate from university studies in 2021 or 2022.  Toxicology or Chemistry as a major or minor is highly desired

·       The position requires 10-20 hours/week (max), throughout the academic year; outside the academic year, the position would be full time

Post doc description
This Post‐Doctoral R&D chemist position is in HP’s imaging and printing business in our Corvallis, Oregon facility.
The work will be focused on development of new ink formulations through a combination of empirical design and
modeling methods.
Our group is responsible for the design and formulation of inkjet printing inks including the characterization of the
print attributes and robustness. This project will focus on developing components that expand various ink
attributes such as optical density and durability on different media. The project will also involve optimizing the
new inks for drop formation and the printing process. Part of the role is to collaborate with the printer
component designers to implement system level changes to balance tradeoffs in the various components.
Aspects of this role include:
 Component development
 Formulation design (includes design for performance, manufacturing and chemical regulatory guidelines)
 Print system characterization
 Cross functional/ pan global team participation and leadership
 External supplier material co‐development and manufacturing
Our group is part of a chemistry center of excellence that develops inks for the different print businesses. While
we work across several sites, this project will partner with colleagues at our Corvallis, Oregon location. The
Corvallis site includes a combination of R&D and manufacturing facilities with work ranging from MEMS fabs to
large industrial printing presses.
Qualifications
 A recent (<1 year) PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field.
 Understanding of fundamental chemical mechanisms, key areas include
o Pigment and dye chemistry
o Polymers in solution
o Organic and inorganic nanoparticle suspensions
o Interfacial and surface chemistry
o Proficiency in appropriate analytical instruments and the data interpretation
 Wet chemistry experience
 Strong written and spoken communication skills.
 Ability to creatively solve problems in a fast‐paced product development environment
 Ability to work & effectively interact (remotely, as needed) with team members from other disciplines,
projects, organizations, cultures, & companies.
 Demonstrated leadership, teamwork/interpersonal, communication and technical skills.
 Resourceful, creative and flexible
 Fluency in English
 Programming skills
 Familiarity with printing technology and color science
 Formulation experience is a plus
