A memorial service for U.S. Army Pfc. Cody James Patterson of Philomath, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan, will be held Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. at LaSells Stewart Center. At the end of the service, there will be a 21-gun salute. Please share with OSU faculty, staff and students the importance of this memorial service and 21-gun salute and an indication that the sound of the blank cartridges being discharged is not cause for public safety concern.

 

The WiN Expo happening on November 18th. I don’t know that it is necessary for me to come by as you would know better than I of people whom would be interested in showcasing their innovations free of charge.

The Expo will begin at 4pm until 7:30pm. If you know of some interested parties, they will be one of fifteen pre-startup innovations that will  be displayed in the lobby of OSU Alumni Center. They will have a table to display a poster. They’re encouraged to bring a small prototype as an example. There wont be a lot of room to display items. They will be presenting to potential Venture Capitalist and the community. This is an opportunity to get their innovation into the public eye. As our guest arrive, they will be the first display, giving them the exposure they deserve.

We are pleased to announce the fifth year of the summer internship program, SCI Scholars, for chemistry and chemical engineering undergraduates.

The program is a joint effort of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) America International Group, the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and was developed to introduce chemistry and chemical engineering students to careers in the chemical industry.

Exceptional sophomores and juniors with a GPA of at least 3.5 and who are majoring in chemistry or chemical engineering are encouraged to apply.

Program details:

  • Thirty-five scholars will be chosen for internship positions in the summer of 2014.
  • SCI Scholars receive $6,000-$10,000+ for a ten-week internship.
  • Students will be awarded a certificate and an additional $1,000, which can be used for any purpose, such as participation at an ACS or AIChE meeting.
  • Scholars nominate a high school chemistry teacher for recognition. Teachers will be awarded a certificate from SCI and $1,000, which can be used for professional development or classroom materials.
  • Applications are due December 14, 2013.

The Office of Undergraduate Research is seeking research project proposals from OSU faculty willing to serve as mentors for undergraduate researchers early in their academic careers. Please note that this program is aimed at students in ALL MAJORS at OSU.

URSA-ENGAGE, (formerly called the URISC-START program), will provide freshman, sophomore and transfer student researchers (in their first year at OSU) under faculty guidance with stipends of up $1,500 for the winter and spring terms of 2014. This program has a completely different setup from that of URISC or the old URISC-START, as explained in the application.

Undergraduate researcher wanted for a project investigating new ways to make next generation materials for light emitting devices (LEDs). The Herman lab in chemical engineering is using a continuous flow microwave reactor to synthesize semiconductor nanoparticles called quantum dots, the undergraduate researcher would aid in the synthesis and purification of these materials.  If you are interested in a career in Oregon’s growing greentech industry this is a great way to gain experience.

We are currently seeking nominations of students to be considered for the 13th Annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital National Graduate Student Symposium (NGSS). This exceptional academic and professional development opportunity for PhD-level students will be held March 25-29, 2014, on the St. Jude campus in Memphis, TN.

The NGSS is an all-expenses-paid symposium to which 40 of the top PhD-level graduate students from around the country are invited to participate. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and their estimated graduation date must be between April 2014 and July 2015.

Preference will be given to students whose work is relevant to the ongoing research at St. Jude. Information about our current research programs is available at www.stjude.org/basic-science-faculty, and the St. Jude Scientific Report can be viewed at www.stjude.org/sci-rpt.

Neither the symposium nor the application process is advertised; thus, students can apply only if they are nominated by a faculty advisor. There is no limit to the number of students an individual can nominate; however, nominations must be received by October 31, 2013. Please feel free to forward this information to your Graduate Program Directors or other faculty members who may wish to nominate their best students to attend this event.

Invitations to apply will be sent to nominated students in November, and completed applications must be received by December 5, 2013. A committee of St. Jude faculty members will review all applications and select the students who will be invited to attend the symposium. Those selected will be notified by January 24, 2013.

In 2009, the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science established the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) program. These integrated, multi-investigator centers involve various combinations of researchers at universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit firms. The EFRCs have conducted fundamental research focused on one or more “grand challenges” and use-inspired “basic research needs” identified in major strategic planning efforts by BES and the scientific community. These centers bring together the skills and talents of teams of investigators to perform energy-relevant basic research with a scope and complexity beyond that possible in standard single-investigator or small-group projects. The multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary nature of these centers fosters an environment in which innovations are encouraged and scientific breakthroughs accelerated to provide the basis for transformative energy technologies. The EFRCs pursue the fundamental understanding necessary to enhance U.S. energy security and to meet the global need for abundant, clean, and economical energy.

The Office of Basic Energy Sciences announces the re-competition of the EFRCs and encourages both new and renewal applications. Applications will be required to address both use-inspired priority research directions identified by the series of “Basic Research Needs” reports and scientific grand challenges identified in the report Directing Matter and Energy: Five Challenges for Science and the Imagination, both of which are described below.
