Since Chemistry is The Central Science, students in a variety of majors need to take at least one class in Chemistry. This is especially true in the health professions—everyone from lab technicians to nurses to physical therapists to doctors—all need to have an understanding of chemistry. That is why Dr. Jeff Gautschi (OSU Cascades and Ecampus instructor) and Kim Thackray (Chemistry Ecampus Coordinator) had a booth at the UC Davis Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions National Conference in early October.

At this conference, they had the opportunity to speak with many different types of students that could benefit from taking OSU Chemistry online—

-High school students who might want to begin their college coursework in Chemistry while still in high school.
-College students in California who may be having trouble getting in to the Chemistry classes they need in order to advance in their major.
-Post-bac students looking toward professional school—Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Medical school, etc.—who need chemistry as a prerequisite for their application.
-Pre-health advisors and advisors from community colleges.

The wide range of online Chemistry classes offered by Oregon State University can meet the needs of all these students and more; check out what we are offering this term!

The Research Office is accepting applications for the Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Creativity (URISC) program for Winter and/or Spring terms 2014-15. This program supports undergraduate research activities from all academic disciplines within the university. NOTE: the program description and application have been revised: http://oregonstate.edu/research/incentive/urisc. Information: Debbie Delmore at debbie.delmore@oregonstate.edu. Deadline: Nov. 3.

Name: Kim Thackray

Area of study / position title: Chemistry Ecampus Coordinator

Why chemistry? (What about it initially interested you, etc.) – Tell me a funny story

I have always loved Chemistry (I have a rusty undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering), so was thrilled to be able to join the Chemistry department staff. I understand what it is like to have acid holes in the front of all your jeans.

Research focus (in non-science terms) or basic job duties?

My main duties are—

* supporting the Ecampus faculty

* collecting and analyzing data to show the effectiveness of our program

* reviewing transcripts and managing override requests for Ecampus students

* working to grow our online program through marketing and outreach

One thing that you truly love about your job?

Our online students come from all over the world, and take our classes for a million different reasons. One thing I really love is talking with a potential student who doesn’t really know what they want, and helping them to understand our program and find a class that meets their needs. Turning a “potential student” into an “OSU student” gives me a thrill!

One interesting/strange factoid about yourself.

I lived in Barcelona for 4 years when my children were small.

Do you know someone who’s a hero here at OSU because of the extra effort that they put forth or the extra moment they take to make your day pleasant?  Here’s a great way to celebrate them.  Professional Faculty Leadership Association is always seeking nominations for “Our Heroes” awards.  Neither you or the nominated individual need to be members.   Build up your karma bank by celebrating the heroes that help us every day.

Faculty Release Time (FRT): The Research Office, Incentive Programs is accepting applications for the FRT Winter or Spring 2014-15 release. The program provides limited funding for individuals developing external grant proposals or who wish to further their scholarly activities. Program description and application: http://oregonstate.edu/research/incentive/frt. Information: Debbie Delmore at debbie.delmore@oregonstate.edu. Deadline: Nov. 3.

science-teacher-blank-chalkboard copyChemistry Stores is pleased to announce they are now offering a lab coat laundry service! Yes, that’s right, you no longer need to wander the halls in your generationally coated, highly contaminated lab coat!! You too can have a nice crisp clean lab coat!

Here’s how it works: Bring your lab coat to Chemistry Store, fill out the clipboard and make sure your name is in your lab coat. On October 10th 2014 Chemistry Stores staff will take your coat out to the cleaners and in 2-3 days it will be back fresh and clean!

We will offer this laundry service once per term, around the end of the term. A reminder email will be sent out a couple weeks prior to every laundry service date with instructions.

The exact cost is yet to be determined, However, based on previous terms I estimate the cost will be around $3 or $4.

You have until the end of next week to get your lab coats turned in but don’t wait until the last minute. You don’t want to be “That Guy” in the lab with your dirty lab coat!

Thank you for using Chemistry Stores for all your laboratory needs!

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation invites you to submit an application for a 2015 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award.

Your institution may submit one application for an award.  Applications are due December 1, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. PST.

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation is pleased to announce the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award. This award program is intended to support postdoctoral scholars with the highest potential for success in an independent academic career in chemistry and the life sciences, and to assist in their transition from “mentored yet independent” postdoctoral to an independent, tenure-track position. Nearly all successful academic careers in science at present begin with a postdoctoral period of additional training and development prior to the first tenure tract appointment. These individuals are expected to become the next generation of leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology.

Fellows will be appointed for two years, and may begin as early as August of their application year, and no later than December 31.  The award amount will range from $57,000 – $67,000 based on research experience with 75% of the award going towards the stipend, which may be supplemented from other sources, and 25% used towards research expenditures.

The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award is a merit based program; issue of gender, race and financial need should not be considered contributing factors in the application review process or in the selection of the postdoctoral candidate.

Before submitting an application, invited institutions must identify a postdoctoral candidate, and an individual who will serve as a mentor in the supervising, training and research experience of the Fellow. The mentor should be an active investigator in the area of the candidate’s proposed research. The submitted application must be a collaborative effort between the institution, postdoctoral candidate and identified mentor.

At the time of application, the identified candidate for the postdoctoral fellowship award must be a United States Citizen or lawfully admitted to the U.S. for Permanent Residence.

Mission
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation established by Dr. and Mrs. Beckman in 1977. The mission of the foundation is to make grants to non-profit research institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments, and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science.

Please see the Program Overview &Submission Process at http://beckman-foundation.com/aob-postdoc-invitation-letterregarding the proposal requirements.
