OSU Mourns Loss of Dedicated Administrator Mark McCambridge

Mark McCambridge, former vice president for Finance and Administration at Oregon State University, died Thursday, Jan. 16, from cancer. He was 62.

McCambridge was born in Seattle, Wash., and graduated from Santa Clara University in California. He joined OSU in 1994 as director of Business Services. Before coming to OSU he was executive director of the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation. He held several positions at OSU before being named vice president in 2001. McCambridge retired from OSU in July 2013.

“Mark McCambridge was a very special friend of mine,” said OSU President Ed Ray. “And he was a great friend of many, many people at Oregon State University, within higher education in Oregon and throughout the Corvallis community. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

“Mark was instrumental in helping to plan the success that OSU is achieving today, and he championed the highest level of public service and fiscal transparency. He accomplished so much and touched so many lives because of his basic decency, integrity, compassion and sense of service. His word was his bond.”  [read more…]

Undergraduate Research Awards

Oregon State University Libraries is pleased to announce the seventh annual Library Undergraduate Research Award. This award recognizes and rewards OSU undergraduates who, through comprehensive use of the OSU Libraries, demonstrate outstanding research, scholarship, and originality in writing a paper or completing a project. Typically there are two $1000 scholarships awarded.  The deadline for your submission is Jan. 31.

Discovering the Scientist Within

This free workshop for middle school girls for encouraging them to pursue careers in science and engineering will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Linus Pauling Science Center.  Pre-registration is required. UO MCAT Prep

The winter 2014 workshop begins Jan. 25! The sessions are taught live in Eugene and via video conference in Portland. Streaming and video on demand offer additional options for location, schedule and learning style.

INSTRUCTORS  The University’s MCAT Preparation Workshop is conducted by faculty members and testing experts who teach biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, and verbal reasoning material specifically tailored for the MCAT. All instructors focus on helping students perform to their best abilities on the MCAT.

WORKSHOP MATERIALS include comprehensive review books and AAMC full-length practice tests. In addition, participants have access to course videos _and other materials that supplement in-class instruction.

CSMC Undergraduate Research Program

The CSMC Summer Research Program for undergraduates is a 9 week summer research program in sustainable materials science. Research positions are available in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering.

At the start of the summer, students attend a one week tutorial called the Sustainable Materials Research Training (SMaRT) Camp at the University of Oregon. After SMaRT Camp, students perform cutting edge research at one of the CSMC host labs.

Students receive a $4000 stipend.

Data-Driven Discovery Investigator Competition

Pre-Application Process: January 9 through February 24, 2014

We are pleased to announce that the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Data-Driven Discovery Investigator Competition has now launched.  This competition is open to researchers in any PhD-granting institution or a private research organization in the United States.  The pre-application process will run from January 9 through February 24, 2014. If you or your colleagues are interested in learning more, please see the full solicitation attached as a PDF.

As an open call, we are also hoping to spread the word far and wide among qualified applicants, and to that end we’d like to ask your help. Please share this news through your institutional networks, social media, mailing lists, etc. In brief:

*Our Data-Driven Discovery Initiative seeks to advance the people and practices of data-intensive science to take advantage of the increasing volume, velocity, and variety of scientific data to make new discoveries. Data-intensive science is inherently multidisciplinary, combining natural sciences with methods from statistics and computer science.

*The goal of the DDD Investigator awards is to fund individuals who exemplify this new kind of data-driven discovery. These innovators are striking out in new directions and are willing to take risks with the potential of huge payoffs in some aspect of data-intensive science. Successful applicants must make a strong case for developments in the natural sciences (biology, physics, astronomy, etc.), or science enabling methodologies (statistics, machine learning, scalable algorithms, etc.) and applicants that credibly combine the two are especially encouraged. Note that the Science Program does not fund disease targeted research. It is anticipated that the DDD initiative will make about 15 awards at ~$1,500,000 each ($200K-$300K/year for five years).

*The pre-applications are due Monday February 24, 2014 by 5pm Pacific Time. They must be submitted online at www.moore.org/DDDInvestigator. A list of frequently asked questions is posted on the site. If your question is not answered, please contact the email address below. Pre-applications will be reviewed by Foundation staff and external experts.

*The Foundation anticipates extending invitations for full applications in April 2014.
