The incumbent serves as a Research Chemist in the Bio-Oils Research Unit, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois. The focus of the unit is to develop new technology for using vegetable oils as renewable sources for value-added industrial products. The assigned project is “New High-Value Biobased Materials with Applications Across Industry.” Incumbent will be an expert in biobased polymeric materials and conduct research addressing needs of national interest for value-added industrial materials from agricultural commodities, especially plant oils. Incumbent provides expertise on synthesis, analysis, characterization, structure/function relationships, and industrial applications of biobased materials to the Research Leader, Lead Scientist, domestic and international collaborators, ARS Office of National Programs, and stakeholders. Incumbent is responsible for conceiving, initiating, planning, executing, evaluating, and publishing research on plant oil-based materials and technologies. Incumbent has authority to identify research priorities and to develop collaborations both within and outside of ARS, including other federal agencies, universities and cooperating industrial stakeholders. Incumbent will develop a stakeholder base to advocate for enhancing the research and to enable commercialization of products to meet mandated technology transfer objectives with the potential to increase funding.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Position description:
A Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required and postdoctoral experience is highly preferred. Successful candidates will have the potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and research and should be committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community.
Teaching responsibilities will be in introductory and organic chemistry courses and labs, with additional teaching responsibilities depending on area(s) of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the College’s interdisciplinary programs. The College has new and growing initiatives in environmental science and engineering and biomedical engineering; candidates contributing to one of these areas through work in Green Chemistry, Environmental Organic Chemistry, or Polymer Chemistry are especially welcome. This position involves teaching, on average, two courses in each of three trimesters. It is expected that the successful hire will establish and maintain a high-quality research program that involves undergraduate students and enhances the synergy between the chemistry department and other science and engineering departments.
About the Department of Chemistry:
The new hire will expand our department from twelve to thirteen permanent faculty members with support from one administrative assistant and one laboratory specialist. One faculty member also serves as the department’s dedicated instrumentation specialist. Annually, about 15-25 students graduate with a degree in chemistry or biochemistry, and about 11% of the students on campus take introductory chemistry courses. Our department has a strong collegial culture; we collaborate to continue to innovate and improve our approaches to teaching and scholarship in an undergraduate liberal arts with engineering setting. We have offices and research spaces in several science and engineering buildings, the most recent of which – the Integrated Science and Engineering Center – completed in 2020. We maintain an exceptional suite of advanced instrumentation in support of research and teaching.

  Compensation:
  The annual salary range for this position is $81,500-$83,500. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, Northridge has initiated a search for two full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry positions commencing August 2025, one in Organic Chemistry (540043) and one in Biochemistry (540021).

The successful Organic Chemistry candidate will have research interests in synthetic methodology, organic materials chemistry, computational organic chemistry, and/or physical organic chemistry. The successful Biochemistry candidate will diversify, and ideally further modernize, the biochemistry research areas currently represented in the Department. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory and general chemistry courses at the undergraduate level, and either organic chemistry or biochemistry and special topics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry or a closely related field (Molecular or Structural Biology, Biophysics, etc.), postdoctoral or industrial research experience, demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate courses, high-caliber research experience in their area of specialization, and a robust plan for independent research activity, feasible for success at CSUN, that includes working with and mentoring undergraduate and MS-level students, publication in top-tier journals, and obtaining extramural funding.
