The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is accepting applications for the 2019 Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs. Eligibility and online application information are available on the Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs website.

Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U. S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granteddeferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) program¹, political asylees, andrefugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations), and
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based field of science, social science, or humanities

Stipends:

  • Predoctoral–$24,000 per year for three years

Awardees will have expenses paid to attend at least one Conference of Ford Fellows. Approximately 70 predoctoral, 36 dissertation, and 24 postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded.

These awardsinclude generous stipends ranging from $45,000 – $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, andhigher for additional experience. Limited graduate level awards are also available. OnTo develops technologies for recycling and reclamation of lithium-ion battery materials for electric vehicle and other applications.

 

The Company is accepting applications for an ONAMI Graduate Student Internship position in industrial research and development.  A successful applicant will have interest and experience in  (1) experimental physical sciences, (2) chemical process engineering (3) mechanical engineering and/or (4) automation engineering.

 

A successful chemistry intern will handle air sensitive compounds, build batteries, deconstruct batteries, characterize materials, program battery testing protocols, develop chemical processes.  A successful engineering intern will program machinery, perform separations and chemical processes on battery materials. The internship anticipates prioritization of chemistry; however, The Company anticipates hiring in all of these areas.

 

MS students studying chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics engineering, automation engineering, physics or materials science are encouraged to apply.  OnTo is located in Bend, Oregon, which is where the intern will be working.  The position is anticipated to start mid-September (17) 2018 or mid-October (9) 2018, and be completed in June 2019 (assuming 9 months).   The intern will be mentored by Dr. Steve Sloop, President of OnTo Technology LLC.

As the chairperson of an ACS approved program, I hope that you’ll be excited to hear some of the new initiatives that are coming out of the ACS Office of Professional Training (OPT) and the Committee on Professional Training (CPT):

  1. We now have a new logo for ACS approved programs.  This logo can be used on your websites to advertise to students that your chemistry program is approved by the ACS.  Students can also use this image on their posters (or slides) when presenting at local, national, or international meetings.   I’ve attached a full color version in two formats, but we can also provide others if requested (black and white, other formats etc.)
  2. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award recognizes graduate students who show exemplary promise as future leaders of higher education; who demonstrate a commitment to developing academic and civic responsibility in themselves and others; and whose work reflects a strong emphasis on teaching and learning. The award honors the work of K. Patricia Cross, Professor Emerita of Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout her career, Pat Cross helped the higher education community better understand our students, their characteristics, and their needs, and recognize what our responsibilities should be. Her ground-breaking scholarship paved the way for a legacy of work on age, socioeconomic class, gender, race, sexual orientation, and numerous other aspects of intersectional social identity.

Eligibility
All doctoral level graduate students who are planning a career in higher education are eligible, regardless of academic department. Graduate students in fields where the Master’s degree is the terminal degree, such as the MFA in art, are also eligible. (Nominees must hold student status in January 2019.)

Applicants must demonstrate:

1. Leadership ability or potential for exercising leadership in teaching and learning, with a strong commitment to academic and civic responsibility; and

2. Leadership or potential leadership in the development of others as leaders, scholars, and citizens.

Nomination Process
A faculty member or administrator must nominate the student, with a supporting letter from a second faculty member or administrator. The following materials must be submitted for an application to be considered:

1. Nomination letter from a faculty member or administrator;
2. Supporting letter from a second faculty member or administrator;
3. Statement from the student indicating how he or she meets the award criteria;
4. A copy of the student’s curriculum vitae.

Nominations can be submitted anytime, but no later than October 1, 2018. Nominees must also complete an online form with all contact information. Only complete nominations will be considered.

The Award
The K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award provides financial support for graduate students to attend AAC&U’s 2019 Annual Meeting, which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, January 23–26, 2019. All award recipients are required to attend the conference.

The award includes travel, lodging, conference registration, and a one-year affiliation with AAC&U, including subscriptions to all AAC&U periodicals.

The awards will be announced in December 2018, and recognized at AAC&U’s Annual Meeting in January.
