Faculty-Floor Dinners AS (Interaction – PD)

Fall/Winter/Spring

Competencies

  1. Engage with teaching faculty outside the classroom
  2. Will be able to articulate an individual OSU faculty’s academic college, courses taught, and general interests

Strategies

  1. Each term in 2013-14, Res Ed staff will facilitate faculty-floor dinners.  Most halls conduct several floor dinners throughout the year as a tradition.  For one floor dinner during the year, Res Ed staff will invite teaching faculty to join.  The RA/RAs on a particular floor will responsible for contacting a faculty member who they have a current or previous relationship with, determining a date/time, and determining a plan for interaction.  The hope is integrating faculty into existing floor traditions, where the group of student participants is smaller, will be less intimidating for both sides.  “Floor” dinner can be defined by RD staff in a variety of ways, from the subsection of a floor that one RA is responsible for to an entire floor of students with 2-3 RAs.  However it is defined, each “floor” will have one faculty-floor dinner during the year, and each hall will spread these out equally each term.
  2. NOTE: The goal of this initiative is to provide an opportunity for teaching faculty to interact with students in an informal setting.  Given that, any “floor” group may work with a teaching faculty to develop an alternate event that accomplishes this goal (fireside chat, class preview in LLC, etc).
