The Health Effects Institute (www.healtheffects.org) seeks a motivated Research Assistant to join our science team. HEI is a leading scientific institute that funds high-quality research on air pollution, energy development, and health effects to inform policy decisions around the world. This position will primarily support our core air pollution program with opportunities to learn from staff across all of HEI’s programs.

This position is an excellent entry-level, full-time opportunity for an individual who has science training and wants experience that would be helpful in defining their next steps in educational and career development. We expect a candidate to make a 1.5-to-2-year commitment, beginning in August 2023 or soon thereafter. The successful candidate will work closely with HEI’s scientific staff in an intellectually engaging and collaborative work environment located in the heart of Boston’s downtown.

Position Description

Responsibilities
•    Work with science staff to prepare summary documents, including technical reports, policy briefs, and factsheets related to ongoing projects and meetings and meeting minutes.
•    Collect, organize, and analyze scientific literature and manage literature databases.
•    Participate in various meetings and events conducted by HEI.
•    Prepare clear and effective visual presentations of data.
•    Conduct secondary research as needed on specific topics.
•    Assist with social media strategy, content generation, and scheduling as needed.
•    Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
•    
Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, public health, environmental science, engineering, or closely related field. Candidates with Master’s degrees will not be considered for this position.
•    Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with people from diverse technical and geographic backgrounds.
•    Experience with MS Office suite and citation management systems (e.g., Zotero, Mendeley).

•    Strong writing and science communication skills.
•    Quantitative analytical and data visualization skills; experience with R and/or Python and GIS software would be helpful.

Position Summary: Environmental Health and Safety’s mission is to foster a safe and healthful environment for the OSU community. EH&S’ goal is to partner with the OSU community to protect human health and the environment, ensure regulatory compliance, and to preserve University interests and assets. The results of this program affect the entire University student body, faculty, and staff.

This position will assist departments in occupational safety & health assessments for office, field, shop, construction, agricultural, and non-laboratory and laboratory areas; perform regular incident/accident follow-ups; provide respirator and hearing protection fit testing and training; perform ergonomic evaluations and help advise departments on issues of environmental health and safety, and respond to campus emergencies upon request of their supervisor.

Position Duties:

(55%) DEPARTMENT SAFETY ADVISOR and EH&S ASSESSMENTS: Assist departments in implementing the OSU Safety Management Program and other occupational health and safety programs. Assistance includes, but is not limited to, performing assessments, assessing hazards, investigating reports of unsafe conditions, conducting safety training, and developing safety documents and resources. Frequent visits to shop, construction, and agricultural settings where occupational hazards and/or chemicals are stored and used will be required. Administrative responsibilities include, but are not limited to, understanding, interpreting, and applying regulatory codes, writing procedures, creating and presenting training materials, utilizing construction standards, standard operating procedures, and policies and practices set forth for Environmental Health & Safety.

(20%) INCIDENT/ACCIDENT FOLLOWUP: Perform incident/accident follow-up investigations utilizing accident data from OSU Worker’s Compensation and SAIF. Meet with supervisors, injured persons, and witnesses as necessary to perform follow-ups and make written recommendations for corrective action. Maintain records of accident circumstances, photographs, notes, and documentation of follow-up recommendations/corrective actions.

(15%) RESPIRATOR and HEARING PROTECTION FIT TESTING: Coordinate respirator fit testing and hearing protection training as required or requested by the OSU community. Maintain testing records and testing equipment. Input of testing records into the EH&S management information system. Coordinate testing with Occupational Medicine as required.

(5%) ERGONOMICS: Coordinate the ergonomics program and respond to customer requests for ergonomic consultations and other resources. Utilize SAIF’s ErgoPoint software database, perform in-person ergonomic assessments, and provide follow-up as needed or requested. Also track and manage Safety In Motion training for trainers and facilitate its use within the campus community.

(5%) Perform other duties as assigned, and any administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to becoming familiar with all construction standards, relevant occupational safety & health codes, standard operating procedures, policies and procedures, follow all business rules, standard operating procedures, and administrative practices.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree with primary focus (45 quarter hours or 32 semester hours) in the physical sciences; AND Two years of related professional experience in environmental, health, or safety; OR A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or professional certifications. Graduate level courses in the subject areas may be substituted, on a credit-hour basis, for a portion of the required experience. Preference may be given to applicants who have completed graduate-level courses or have additional experience in Industrial Hygiene, or in occupational, public, or environmental programs. Transcripts must be submitted for all required and/or related courses. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational leadership skills.

What you will do

In this role you will have oversight and accountability for the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) operations at a single plant and may assist in some EHS activities at other sites, as needed. In this role you will partner with other members of your Regional EHS leadership teams to ensure seamless implementation of Global, Regional, and plant EHS standards, practices, systems, and tools and will serve as the general subject matter expert for EHS operations within your plant.

You will provide hands on and technical support on EHS matters across your plant and drive initiatives as an individual contributor or leader of project teams to address specific changes or issues that apply across the plant.

How you will do it

  • Partner with other members of the EHS team such as the Regional Industrial Hygienist, Regional Environmental Engineer, and Site Occupational Health Nurse as well as the broader plant operations team to develop site specific execution plans that deliver on our operational and EHS strategies.
  • Communicate EHS opportunities and risks to Plant and EHS leadership.
  • Maintain general awareness of applicable international, state, local and corporate EHS requirements.
  • Lead and implement the plant’s EHS programs and processes.
  • Implement a communication strategy across your plant that reinforces a high level of EHS awareness and ownership at all levels of the plant.
  • Validate program and process implementation with hourly staff, team leaders, supervisors, and plant management. 
  • Review contract documentation for jobs meeting large project criteria for relevant issues that may affect the execution of the EHS programs at the plant. 
  • Oversee EHS technical, management, and process training for all levels of employees based on specific needs and requirements.  Training may include the business’ strategies and goals, technical EH&S and program information, injury trend data, and regulatory information.
  • Track and communicate EHS performance metrics including goals and the core processes (i.e. audits, events, training, etc.).
  • Guide Plant Management and hourly staff in analyzing incidents and their related trends, including injuries, blood leads, internal spills, external releases, potential permit non-compliances, compliance with reporting deadlines and regulatory inspections, to ensure that root causes, complete risk assessments, and associated preventative measures are identified and implemented in a timely manner.
  • Represent the EHS function in obtaining approval for needed capital and expenses to address EHS risks and opportunities.
  • Partner with your Regional EHS teams on filling gaps for your plant (i.e. industrial hygiene, occupational health, permitting, auditing, etc.).
  • Ensure prompt escalation of EHS issues to Business, Operational, and EHS Leadership.

Department Overview

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. The Institute performs biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, to improve workers’ lives across the nation, particularly in Oregon.

The student will be working with the Oregon Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program, which conducts surveillance, investigation, and assessment of occupational fatalities in Oregon and produces safety materials to promote worker safety. OR-FACE investigations of fatal occupational incidents assess risk factors that include the working environment, the worker, activity, tools, energy exchange and role of management.
