Internship overview

You’ll spend 12 weeks as part of our team of industrial hygienists, ergonomists, nurse consultants, safety consultants, and Total Worker Health® experts, visiting customers’ workplaces throughout Oregon. You will also assist the team with consultations, hazard evaluations, and report writing. Previous interns have found their way into safety management and other leadership roles at SAIF, as well as IH positions in insurance, government, pharmaceutical companies, and occupational health and safety consulting firms. 

Based out of our Salem office, you’ll have easy access to Portland, the Oregon Coast, mountain ranges, valleys, and other places to explore.

Responsibilities

  • Consult on a variety of occupational health issues using an integrated Total Worker Health® approach
  • Assist SAIF’s IH and health team with consultations and analyses of policyholders’ worksites, including the evaluation of physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards over a wide range of industries
  • Draft reports to be submitted to internal and external customers at the request of and with the guidance of SAIF IH and health staff
  • Research occupational health issues
  • Complete special projects as assigned

Recommended qualifications

  • Bachelor or master’s degree student in industrial hygiene/occupational/environmental health sciences and completion of industrial hygiene laboratory or instrumentation course work required by the degree program of the college or university
  • Able to work both independently and cooperatively within a team doing complex, confidential work
  • Superior problem-solving, research, and writing skills demonstrating an ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and persuasive way
  • Basic personal computer and word processing skills
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record or ability to arrange transportation for occasional travel out of the office
  • Other combinations of education and experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job also will be considered

Hours:         Full-time during summer break 2023 

Start Date:   Approximately May 2023 (flexible)

Duration:     Three months

Salary:        $23,25 per hour; benefits do not apply

Responsibilities

  • Assist safety and health staff with customer consultations to gain exposure to the services, resources, and training that SAIF provides.
  • Learn and apply a variety of occupational safety and health concepts using an integrated Total Worker Health® approach.
  • Work with staff to review, update, or create safety and health resources, web content, or training for our customers.
  • Participate in training opportunities to develop skills in all aspects of safety and health consultation, applicable rules and regulations, SAIF’s safety and health best practices and guidelines, and customer service.
  • Attend and participate in team and committee meetings to gain experience with the collaborative work process.
  • Learn about the connection between safety and health and workers’ compensation insurance in Oregon. Learn about stakeholders and business partners.
  • Manage and complete assigned projects and tasks.

Recommended qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a program that will lead to a bachelor or master’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health sciences, or public health.
  • Able to work well individually and as part of a group.
  • Comfortable researching scientific journals as well as internet sources.
  • Clear, persuasive writing skills; able to take complex ideas and make them accessible to multiple audiences.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft products such as MS Office, MS Outlook, Office 365.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record or ability to arrange transportation for travel out of the office.
  • Other combinations of education and experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job will also be considered.

Job Description

Support the Lamb Weston Environmental, Health, and Safety department with a focus on safety in our manufacturing facilities. Interns will be responsible for several projects. For each project, the intern will be assigned a “mentor” to work with side-by-side to complete the project. Each assignment will require a written report from the intern as well as documented assessment/review by the Environmental, Health, and Safety professional assigned as a mentor.  

The aspects of the internship may include but at not limited to: 

  • Conduct an ergonomic assessment, machine safety assessment, or walking working surface assessment using the Lamb Weston assessment tools in conjunction with the onsite leadership team  
  • Utilize the hierarchy of controls to implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) as needed based on assessments. Track those CAPA’s to completion throughout your internship 
  • Assist the onsite internal auditing committee in quarterly reviews of the EHS Framework elements 
  • Actively participate in the audit including walk-through, interview of employees, and development of the report/recommendations 
  • Interact with hourly plant employees within the facility while assisting the location’s Safety Manager with other projects and tasks  
  • Shadow the onsite EHS team to learn what a career with Lamb Weston would look like  
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement efforts in the facility as a member of the EHS Team 
  • Lead and participate in various EHS special projects

Basic & Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program related to Safety & Health or related technical field (ex. mechanical/industrial engineering) 
  • Juniors, Seniors, or Master’s degree students preferred but also accepting recent grads 
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 preferred 
  • Demonstrated strengths in relationship building and problem-solving 
  • Continuous improvement mindset and methodology  
  • Excellent verbal and oral communication skills  
  • Strong analytical skills 
  • Strong computer competency including experience with MS suite
