Job Description:

This position is with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA). Oregon OSHA is responsible for assuring safe and healthful working conditions for Oregon workers through promulgation and enforcement of Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, and by providing education and consultation to employees and employers.

This position is eligible to telework on a part-time basis once the incumbent has gained the proficiency to perform work independently. However, regular, scheduled office hours are also required.

Here’s what you will do:

As a Senior Safety Compliance Officer, you will conduct safety evaluations and investigations and take enforcement action in a broad range of workplaces to ensure employer compliance with the Oregon Safe Employment Act. You will also conduct technical training and provide abatement assistance for employers and employees.

Here’s what you need to qualify:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience performing duties of an industrial safety representative or safety officer, OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in industrial safety or occupational safety and health, OR
  • An associate degree in industrial safety or occupational safety and health and two years of industrial safety or regulatory enforcement program experience, OR
  • Four years of industrial safety or regulatory enforcement program experience.

Requested Skills:

  • Previous experience conducting evaluations and providing abatement assistance in a broad range of technical solutions
  • Experience providing safety training to peers and employers or employer groups
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and testimony skills
  • Experience motivating employers and employees to improve workplace safety
  • Strong ability and skill in defusing angry or nervous people
  • Preference may be given to candidates who are able to speak, read, and write Spanish fluently

  • Per the Pay Equity Law passed in 2017, an employee pay assessment will be conducted to determine what pay step the successful candidate will be offered.  The assessment will be based on the relevant experience, education, training, and certifications documented in the application materials.  On average, candidates new to state service will most likely be offered compensation in the lower to mid-level of the salary range.
  • The salary range listed is the non-PERS eligible rate. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible after 6 months of employment, the salary range will increase by 6.95% and the required 6% employee retirement contribution will be deducted from your pay.

Here’s what you will do:

As a DCBS Intern, you will partner with State of Oregon professionals and work on DCBS projects to create process improvements for the agency. Each intern will gain knowledge and grow skills necessary to be a State of Oregon professional. Interns will learn how to apply for future jobs and participate in networking opportunities across the State of Oregon.

The Research Interns will be assigned to do one of the following:

  • Translate Research reports from Statistical Analysis System (SAS) to R and validate the reports; assist the team with redesigning the claims cost model; and assist with setting up version control for RStudio projects within the Research team.

OR

  • Assist with updating an OSHA web tool that assists employers in calculating the cost of a workplace injury and the impact on business profitability. This includes updating research methodology, compiling data, and calculating worker injury cost estimates. 

This internship will run from June 15, 2026 to August 20, 2026. The scheduled hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will be located in Labor and Industries building at 350 Winter St NE Salem, OR. Due to the nature of the duties performed by this position, remote work is not available.

Here’s what you need to qualify:

  • Be enrolled in college at least half time at the time of application

OR

  • Be at least 18 years of age by the time the program starts on June 15, 2025.

Requested Skills:

  • Pursuing an undergrad degree in data science/analytics
  • Demonstrated proficiency with R
  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft computer applications, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly present information
  • Skills in team engagement; problem-solving and resolution
  • Excellent attention to detail and aptitude for working with data.
  • Working knowledge of research concepts and methodologies
  • Experience working on technical projects and/or computer science/research classes
