Department Overview

The Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network (ORPRN) was established in 2002 at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. ORPRN’s mission is to improve health and equity for all Oregonians through community engaged research, education, and policy. ORPRN facilitates a broad variety of clinical health care research, quality improvement projects, and practice transformation efforts in rural Oregon, and across the state. ORPRN facilitates a broad variety of health care research, quality improvement projects, and practice transformation efforts throughout Oregon through the work of the Practice Facilitators. Practice Facilitators are located regionally around the state.

The Practice Facilitator I (PF1) works under the direction of a project manager or principal investigator, providing project coordination and practice facilitation support on small to moderate-sized research, implementation science projects, and technical assistance programs. The PF1 assists with scheduling, recruitment, data collection, data entry, documentation, and practice facilitation with limited complexity. In addition, the PF1 begins to foster relationships with clinical practices and community partners, and engage in relevant community events to support ORPRN’s regional presence.   

The Practice Facilitator I conducts research with regional clinics and communities, builds quality improvement infrastructure with the clinics, and fosters community engagement. Travel around Oregon is required for this position.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Project Coordination & Research Support
    • Assist in coordinating small to medium-sized projects and/or programs, monitoring study activities, timelines, and deliverables.
    • Organize meetings: schedule, prepare agendas, take notes.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of study and quality improvement protocols.
    • Participate in the collection, tracking, and/or analysis or qualitative and/or quantitative data.
    • Participate in dissemination activities, including publication of manuscripts and presentations at professional conferences.
    • Support qualitative data collection, writing of grants through research literature review, collecting letters of support, drafting sections of grant proposals, and creating other supporting documents.
  • Practice Facilitation & Building Quality Improvement (QI) Infrastructure with Regional Clinics
    • Engage inter-professional clinic teams in practice transformation: train in use of QI skills, tools and systems; participate in team QI meetings; coach and motivate clinic teams.
    • Support practices to develop skills for population-based health and data-driven quality improvement; assist practices and provide tailored support to clinic teams to guide implementation of projects and/or programs
    • Facilitate clinic group discussions to set priorities and aid decision making.
    • Teach QI tools and strategies to peers at ORPRN; participate in ORPRN QI curriculum development.
  • Community & Partner Engagement
    • Promote community research priorities and support community members in initiating and conducting research; build clinical research capacity.
    • Foster relationships with community organizations to bridge project work, reporting local needs, identifying topics or issues for future research, building list of contacts, and developing trust across the community.
    • Serve as primary regional liaison, representing ORPRN with OHSU, regional health systems, critical access hospitals, Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs), and community health improvement organizations.
    • Work with partners to identify new projects, identify community priorities for evaluation, and plan for ongoing work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (such as research, health sciences, public health, social sciences, or other related fields) AND 1 year of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 1-year relevant experience with a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Basic knowledge of practice facilitation concepts and skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

Job Description

The Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager (EHS Manager) manages the EHS program for the facility; inspects work areas to detect unsafe or unhealthy working conditions; plans and directs safety and health activities to evaluate and control environmental hazards by performing the following duties below.

This role involves work at our manufacturing facilities in Clackamas, OR and Vancouver, WA. It is in person and will require an on-site presence at both. General working hours are Monday to Friday 7AM to 3:30PM with overtime as needed to complete tasks or respond to safety issues.

Health & Safety:

  • Coordinates and manages the planning, development, implementation, and administration of occupational health, safety program, policy and procedures in Clackamas, OR and Vancouver, WA manufacturing facilities.

Summary: The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist II role supports a variety of environmental and health/safety activities at the Bend, Oregon site.  These activities support employee safety, health, and regulatory compliance for OSHA and DEQ requirements.

Essential Functions: Safety related duties include:

  • Assists in selection and use of respiratory protection, protective clothing, hearing protection and safety glasses.
  • Support or lead incident investigations.

The Watershed Management Section of the Water Quality Program oversees the development and maintenance of the water quality management plan; establishes total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), waste load allocations, and load allocations to be achieved by those streams and water bodies that do not currently meet water quality standards; coordinates on Nonpoint Source Program issues internal and external to DEQ; administers the 319 Grant Program; provides statewide coordination for drinking water source protection; and provides statewide coordination of water quality activities on the Columbia River.

What you will do!

You will conduct technical analyses of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Oregon, with a focus on freshwater systems. Your work will include assessments of the frequency, magnitude, and extent of HABs in Oregon’s water; determination of factors contributing to HABs across Oregon; and consultation to field and laboratory monitoring activities investigating water quality effects linked to HABs. You will provide water quality data analysis, water quality evaluation and assessment, and technical modeling of complex environmental data requiring subject matter expertise, statistical analysis, spatial analysis, modeling, and other technical expertise to characterize and evaluate HABs. You will provide expertise and assist senior level positions with project development, project planning, and monitoring plans to support basin assessment and development of management plans to address HABs in priority waterbodies. In addition, you will be responsible for coordination with the laboratory, regions, and other DEQ programs, and external communities and interested parties.

What are we looking for?

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field, AND 3 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field (an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable). Minimum Requirements:

Two years of public health and program/project management experience working under general supervision, conducting environmental health inspections that include providing technical assistance and consultation at local or state level; AND a bachelor’s degree with 45 quarter (30 semester) hours in public health, or environmental or physical science. *Graduate training in environmental studies may substitute for one year of experience.

Must be a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or be able to become registered within six months of hire.

Must be a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or have the ability to become a CPO within six months of hire.

About the Department

The North Carolina Center for Coastal Algae, People, and Environment (NC C-CAPE) and the Carolinas Climate Adaptation Partnership (CAP) at NC State are seeking a full time community engagement coordinator to to lead community engagement and initiatives across a diverse portfolio of research projects relevant to environmental health disparities. The grant-funded community engagement coordinator position will begin immediately and is a full-time position with funding up to five years. The North Carolina Center for Coastal Algae, People, and Environment (NC C-CAPE) aims to understand, predict, and reduce risks to human health from cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in coastal waters of North Carolina by looking upstream and off-shore. We seek to reduce human health disparities through investments in innovative environmental data collection, data democracy, and policy. The NOAA-funded Carolinas Climate Adaptation Partnerships (CAP, formerly RISA), housed at NC State University, is committed to understanding our changing climate and addressing the impacts fairly. CAP works together with communities across the Carolinas to help predict and understand their exposure and vulnerability to climate threats, such as drought, heat, and flooding.

The selected candidate will be directly supervised by the NC C-CAPE community engagement director and work with guidance from both the NC C-CAPE and CAP co-directors and other team members to bring a sense of strategic vision to community engagement programs, evaluation, and their impacts on democratic approaches to data co-production and use, and synergies between NC C-CAPE and CAP missions.

Essential Job Duties

The Community Engagement Coordinator requires the skills and knowledge to effectively solicit and convey crucial guidance to the research process and its relevance to reducing environmental health disparities in practice. Key responsibilities include managing end-to-end participant recruitment for community-based research activities; promoting data democracy, open data best practices and the principles of Open Science; creating processes that ensure reliable and long-lasting community contact.

Required duties and skills:

The Community Engagement Coordinator will perform a variety of project activities, including research study coordination, participant recruitment, and community-engaged research focused on environmental health disparities. This includes the following essential job duties:

  • Staying up-to-date on the latest developments in environmental justice and community resilience policies and initiatives;
  • Facilitating training, workshops, and activities to promote mutual understanding and knowledge co-production;
  • Designing and executing engagement strategies within a variety of environmental thematic areas, ensuring the translation of complex scientific research into actionable insights for diverse audiences;
  • Fostering relationships with community leaders, policymakers, and the general public, using effective communication strategies to engage non-scientific partners across diverse, rural, and underserved communities;
  • Promoting data democracy, open data best practices, and the principles of Open Science and data democracy;
  • Traveling overnight for community engagement across North Carolina and South Carolina;
  • Preparing culturally relevant data summaries and reports for internal and external audiences as part of the data report back process;

Required Qualifications

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
  • Ability to travel to community events, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work from our Raleigh-based office during regular business hours most days.
  • Excellent English-language, verbal and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience or post-baccalaureate education in one of the following fields: environmental health policy, community organizing, facilitation, science education, or program management.
  • Prior experience implementing one or more community-engaged research frameworks (i.e. participatory science, community-based participatory research).
  • Ability to provide at least one reference who can detail your experience from a community perspective.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
