Department Overview

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. The Institute performs biomedical/occupational research and innovation for a healthy workforce, to improve workers’ lives across the nation, particularly in Oregon.

The student will be working with the Oregon Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation Program, which conducts surveillance, investigation, and assessment of occupational fatalities in Oregon and produces safety materials to promote worker safety. OR-FACE investigations of fatal occupational incidents assess risk factors that include the working environment, the worker, activity, tools, energy exchange and role of management. 

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assisting with administrative outreach activities (e.g., website, social media, mailings)
  • Conducting data entry, coding, and analysis

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in an undergraduate program (minimum 6 credit hours)
  • Student currently working on a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Proficiency with computers running Windows and PC applications (e.g., MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to express and document ideas clearly and concisely in written communications;
  • Excellent organizational abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with a range of individuals from institutions and organizations
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically and creatively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with additional computer software (Adobe Suite, Common Spot, Tableau ,etc.) is highly desirable
  • Work experience and/or coursework in public/ occupational health and/or research is desirable
  • A solution-oriented approach to issues
  • Excellent record of time management and setting appropriate priorities

Additional Details

Computer work, standing and sitting while using a computer. The position is remote, but occasional in-person team meetings will be preferred for local candidates.

 What you will do:

The facility plant safety manager is responsible for the health and safety of TCCA employees.  This role will develop and execute the TCCA strategy for proactive/engaged employee safety leveraging industry best practices and regulatory guidance.  This position will support the corporate safety manager to achieve corporate safety objectives by administering all safety programs including training programs, workers compensation and incentive programs, overall site safety compliance within OR-OSHA guideline and assist in Administration of Security related policies/ programs as needed.  Support and administer shared safety/ security programs to improve safety culture company wide. 

Here’s a day in the life:

  • Support employee involvement in the safety programs by staying current on regulatory topics
  • Identify and eliminate all unsafe workplace conditions
  • Complete facility inspections – each area no less than once each quarter
  • Develop and deliver monthly safety topic
  • Provide support for the safety committee
  • Audit compliance training ensuring employees have completed annual requirement
  • Assist in developing metrics to target improvement areas and improvements completed
  • Administer Workers Compensation; investigate on the job injuries, track appointments and work releases
  • Support and manage site specific Security policies and programs as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, health & safety or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Computer skills and proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint
  • Preferred: 5 years in the safety field

Tenure track position in Climate and Health

We have an open rank tenure track position at the rank of associate or full professor in Climate and Health in the Environmental Health Division, Department of Public Health Science, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. We have several exciting university wide initiatives in climate and health, including a Climate Resilience Institute and a new graduate program in the Climate and Health. The search is open to all areas of climate and/or environmental health, including chronic exposure to climate sensitive environmental exposures and cancer risks; time-space modeling of the health effects of climate and/or extreme weather events; environmental exposure assessment by developing and utilizing novel technologies and/or methodologies; environmental and/or weather and/or climate exposures related to health risk projections/predictions; the cost-benefit analysis of policies/interventions to mitigate/manage the health effects of climate, extreme weather events and/or other environmental exposures; developing and implementing evidence-based interventions to mitigate and manage the health effects due to environmental exposures, changing climate and weather patterns or climate/weather modified/mediated health environmental exposures.
