What Does Environmental Health Services’ Healthy Homes and Communities Unit Do?

Environmental Health Services (EHS) is part of the Public Health Division in the Health Department. The Healthy Homes and Communities Team develops programs and advances policies that foster healthy and safe communities. We work to limit exposures to hazardous physical, chemical, biological and other environmental agents that may negatively impact health. 

Healthy Homes and Communities’ programs address a variety of environmental risks, such air pollution, lead poisoning, fish consumption, housing, and climate change. Outreach and community engagement are key strategies to offer information and resources to the public. You’ll be working with staff whose work is grounded in an environmental justice and racial equity lens, which will direct your community engagement efforts during this internship.

Internship Description & Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities (50%) for this internship will be to conduct community outreach and engagement efforts: 

  • Support program staff in doing community outreach and engagement for different programs to promote environmental health. 
  • Interpret and present health and scientific information into clear, accessible, and concise messaging for the general public.
  • Employ culturally specific health communication strategies and methods to influence diverse audiences and affect change on various environmental health topics.
  • There will be 5-6 weeks to participate in outreach, as scheduled, about 8-16 hours a week, including weekends.

In addition to community outreach events, project options are available for an intern to choose from. They will choose one project as their focus during the internship based on their interests and abilities (30%):

  • Assist in field research for a Photovoice project
    • Work respectfully and sensitively with houseless/housing insecure people in Multnomah County that fish. 
    • Document participants’ experiences about the topic areas.
    • Develop presentations and project narratives for dissemination and grant reporting.
    • There will be between 4-8 weeks to participate in this project during the internship, about 8-10 hours a week.
       
  • Assist in engagement with communities in urban heat islands.
    • Research the effects of extreme heat and interventions to address heat resilience focus areas in Multnomah County. 
    • Develop a resource guide tailored to specific audiences and geographical areas. 
    • Participate in planning next steps for partnership development and intervention design. 
    • There will be between 4-8 weeks to participate in this project during the internship, about 8-10 hours a week.

Participants are expected to attend College 2 County professional development events. Additionally, they are expected to use some of their time to pursue professional relationships with the County or field of study (20%).

  • Learn about emerging local environmental health topics such as air pollution, climate change, fish toxics, lead poisoning, and vector control.

  • Connect community outreach and health promotion to measurable benefits for both the health department and the wider community.
  • Deliver and receive valuable feedback on strengths and areas for improvement to build relationships within the county and community.

Education and Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidates must be enrolled in a college/university academic institution or have recently graduated within the last year.

  • Ability to confidently, comfortably, and respectfully talk with diverse audiences, representing the County in public.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ideal candidates are enrolled in a public health or medical program or are interested in careers in public health, education, or communications. 
  • Proficiency in a second language is desired but not required.
  • Experience with outreach to culturally specific populations is desired but not required.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite (e.g., Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Drive, Docs, and Slides) and Adobe is desired but not required.

The EHS Department of the Customer Support (CS) organization is responsible for establishing programs and procedures for the engineers who conduct the installation, qualification, repair and maintenance of the ASML systems at customer sites and the necessary transfer of know-how to the customer. This internship sits within our EHS team in Hillsboro.

Your assignment:

  • The goal of the internship is to work in a team environment alongside local experienced EHS professionals, project managers, and leaders to gain insight on the ASML ways of working and our groundbreaking technology.
  • Specific projects will be tailored to match the education/experience level of the intern as well as the interns learning objectives for the summer.
  • Interns will typically be required to document and present their findings as well as making an end of summer presentation to the group about what they achieved during their internship.

Project examples may include:

  • Evaluating the respiratory protection program and aligning the way of working with the regulatory and consensus standard (e.g., ACGIH, AIHA, etc.) requirements
  • Working with stakeholders and developing new processes and procedures based on research, OSHA, and consensus standard requirements.
  • Analyzing EHS data and creating digital scorecards to report on KPIs.
  • Collaborating with EHS from other sites to align and standardize EHS practices.
  • Participating in incident investigations and EHS audits.

You Profile:

  • Minimum 60 hours completed towards a Bachelor’s degree in an EHS field and an expected graduation date of December 2026 or May 2027.
  • Preferred Majors: Industrial/Occupational Hygiene or Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Knowledgeable in MS Office applications – Excel, OneNote, Teams, PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with industrial hygiene practices and respiratory protection a plus.

Position Description

The group you’ll be a part of: The Environmental Intern will report to the Global Environmental Director within the Global Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team at Lam Research.

The impact you’ll make: The Environmental Intern will support both the Global EHS team and the Tualatin site EHS team by contributing to key environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives. Job Summary

This is a full time position with the Environmental Health Program working primarily in the areas of retail food protection, safe drinking water, and VECTOR control.   • Evaluate and document observations, analysis findings, and recommendations. Author technical reports and correspondence for policyholders; submit for internal quality review.
  • Research, analyze, and summarize occupational safety and health issues and trends using a variety of data sources and systems. Develop recommendations to improve outcomes.
  • Work with SAIF staff as needed to review, update, or create safety and health resources, web content, or training for our customers.
  • Learn about the collaboration between safety and health and workers’ compensation insurance in Oregon. Learn about stakeholders and business partners.
  • Explore diverse perspectives and consistently behave sensitively toward differences in cultural norms, expectations, and ways of communicating. Work effectively with others who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and/or work styles.

  • This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy. 

Required qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, nursing, public health, or environment safety and health.

Recommended qualifications

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team doing complex, confidential work.
  • Superior problem-solving, research, and writing skills demonstrating an ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft products such as MS Office, MS Outlook, and Office 365.
  • Experience using industrial hygiene and ergonomic equipment used to assess exposures is preferred.
  • Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.

Internship details

Timeframe: Approximately 12 weeks during summer break 2026.

Location: Internship will be based out of our corporate office in Salem, Oregon.

Pay: $25.25 per hour.

Salary range is $145k to $247k, with a midpoint of $196k.  New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market.

GENERAL PURPOSE: 

Under general direction of the Deputy Executive Director of Capital Project Development, plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of environmental permitting, land use planning, and ecosystems staff; outlines strategy, manages resources, and establishes methods for supporting all projects during planning, design, pre-construction, construction, and operations and for addressing environmental and land use requirements and considerations; participates in the development of environmental and land use planning goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; maintains a thorough understanding of the environmental and land use permitting regulations, and other requirements and maintains effective relationships with agencies, regulators, and local jurisdictions that administer and enforce environmental programs applicable to Sound Transit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Leads one of the core program areas in the Office of Environmental Affairs & Land Use.
  • Collaborates with peers to integrate and align Environmental Permitting, Land Use Planning, and Ecosystem program staff with Sound Transit capital project development and delivery teams as appropriate.
  • Coaches, trains, and motivates staff; coordinates and/or provides staff training; and manages employee relations; manages the workflow and prioritization of projects and measures the performance of the division and all related staff; provides advice and counsel to staff; develops developmental work plans for staff; implements or recommends corrective actions, discipline, and termination procedures as appropriate/necessary.
  • Establishes schedules and methods for supporting all projects during all phases of project delivery, from planning through operations; identifies and forecasts resource needs; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; and allocate resources accordingly.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the environmental and land use permitting processes and regulations in order to help ensure that environmental requirements are adequately addressed in a timely manner for Sound Transit’s capital projects and facilities.
  • Participates in the development of environmental and land use planning goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures; participates in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitors work activities and products for compliance with established policies and procedures; oversees compliance with relevant regulatory programs, third party regulations and jurisdictional permits.
  • Oversees emergent situations; responds to and investigates reports from community members, affected property owners, agencies, regulators, inspectors, and businesses; recommends and approves corrective action; responds to and resolves difficult environmental issues; and briefs management on sensitive issues and prepares strategies to resolve them.
  • Assists in overseeing performance and evaluates work carried out by staff, contractors, and consultants for compliance with Agency, departmental, and project objectives.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned staff as applicable; assigns work activities and coordinates schedules, projects, and programs; provides constructive feedback; reviews and evaluates work and makes effective suggestions and recommendations.
  • Manages budgets for contract tasks; maintains records concerning projects and programs; and prepares reports on environmental activities.
  • Provides support to the office Deputy Executive Director and others on matters as directed; participates on the Environmental and Land Use Office leadership team and helps develop and implement the overall strategic priorities for the Office; serves as staff on a variety of committees; prepares and presents staff reports and briefings to internal department leadership and the Sound Transit Board as needed; attends and participates in professional group meetings; 
  • Maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment; incorporates new developments as appropriate; ensures processes, policies, and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively; ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Agency policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Champions and models Sound Transit’s core values and demonstrates values-based behaviors in everyday interactions across the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Business Administration or related field; Eight years of relevant experience; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Six years of leadership, budgetary, planning and workforce management experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Land use and environmental permitting, and environmental compliance preferred.
  • Natural resource impact evaluation and mitigation strategy experience preferred.
  • Tribal government coordination and consultation protocols preferred.
  • Principles and practices of program development and administration.
  • Strategic policy management principles and practices.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Modern office technology.
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Supporting a comprehensive environmental program, including environmental impact assessment, environmental permitting, ecosystem mitigation and land use planning and permitting.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:  

  • Work is performed in a hybrid field and office environment.
