What is Pollution Prevention?
Pollution prevention (P2) is any practice that reduces, eliminates, or prevents pollution at its source, also known as “source reduction.” Implementing P2 best practices can improve efficiency, prevent wasted resources and save money.
As an OASE intern:
You will be matched with an Oregon business to create sustainability solutions for industry practices.
During this 10-week internship, you will conduct research that can help improve efficiency, save money,
and prevent/reduce waste. Project topics include energy or water audits, toxics reduction, green
chemistry, and life cycle assessment. Read the Host Businesses Project Descriptions very carefully to
determine which project best suits your interests, skills and knowledge. Additionally, you will benefit from:
- Hands on experience in project development and management
- Collaboration with industry
- Mentorship by an OASE engineer or scientist
- Communicating science to interdisciplinary audiences

project descriptions. You must be able to commute to the location of the host business for
in-person internship activities.

Eligibility
Internships are open to any college student in Oregon with junior or senior standing, or attaining
graduate or advanced undergraduate training, in business, economics, engineering, environmental
science, green chemistry, physical science, sustainability science, or other fields.
How to Apply
Oregon Sea Grant uses eSeaGrant for submitting applications. In order to access this system and submit
your application for this fellowship, you must email jenny.engels@oregonstate.edu declaring your
interest in applying. Once you announce your interest in this opportunity, an eSeaGrant account will be
created for you (stating your interest in applying does not make you obligated to apply). All components
of your application will be submitted through this system. We are here to provide assistance as needed,
but please do not wait until the last minute to apply. All application materials must be uploaded to
eSeaGrant by April 19, 2024. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. While we

Required Application Components
A complete application will include the following 3 components. The résumé and transcripts must be uploaded to eSeaGrant as one combined PDF in the order listed below.
- A one or two-page résumé describing your work and/or volunteer experience. Please use 12-point Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins. The résumé must include your name, contact information (including phone and email address), GPA, and educational history. The résumé should also detail your work and volunteer history, particularly as it relates to the OASE opportunity. Include names and contact information for at least 2 references.
2. Please answer each of the following questions in 250 words or less per question. Use 12-point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, and 1.5-line spacing.
- Describe your personal/professional/academic background, including your experience related to this opportunity; your major and why you chose it.
- Why are you interested in pollution prevention, sustainability, chemical policy management,
- green chemistry, lifecycle assessment, energy efficiency, or related topics?
- How will your prior experiences with people from various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds contribute to your success in the Oregon Applied Sustainability Experience program?
- Describe your academic and professional goals, including your plans for the next academic year, or after graduation. Please include your graduation date or anticipated graduation date.
- How will this opportunity help you reach your academic and professional goals? Please indicate which project you are most interested in and why it would be a great opportunity for you professionally.
3. Unofficial transcripts showing all college level education. Official transcripts will be requested at a later date if selected for an interview.

OASE Internship Review Criteria – 20 points total
- The student’s articulated goals for what they want out of the position align with project objectives.
(0 – 5 points, poor to excellent). - Applicant has skills relevant to the position. Which may include the following:
lifecycle assessment, cost benefit analysis, energy audit, economic / sustainability analysis,
materials/waste management. (0 – 5 points, poor to excellent) - Student degree aligns with those identified by host. (0 – 5 points, poor to excellent)
- Priority for graduating / graduated students. (0 – 2 points)
- Priority for students who would benefit from this experience (have not already had similar
opportunities). (0 – 3 points)
Important Dates
-OASE Summer Program: June 17 – August 28, 2024
-Required orientation: 9am-5pm; June 20-21, 2024
-2 required half day mid-summer trainings, one in July and one in August
-Required public presentation of your OASE work August 28, 2024.
Stipend Amount
$6,700 per student for a full-time, 10-week internship (interns must be available to work onsite or
virtually at the businesses on a daily basis). Housing costs are not provided, but limited funds may
be available to support program-related expenses.
