Position Description:
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the interdisciplinary Department of Public Health. We seek an active and engaged colleague who has research and teaching strengths in environmental health and justice (interests may include, but are not limited to, built environments, neighborhood effects, climate justice, sustainability, disaster preparedness, etc.). We encourage applications from persons with experience conducting community-based research serving particularly vulnerable, underserved, and urban populations.
Candidates should have substantive scholarly expertise in one or more defined areas and be able to develop collaborative research efforts in the metropolitan Detroit area. We seek a colleague with an active research program, track record of published scholarship, and an ability to draw on this research to inform their teaching and service. Candidates engaged in multidisciplinary research, community-based research collaborations, and environmental justice and advocacy research are encouraged to apply. We also value candidates committed to evidence-based intervention research employing traditional and non-traditional quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., ethnography, Photovoice, and mixed methods).
Candidates will be expected to teach required courses in the undergraduate public health curriculum. The preferred candidate will have teaching strengths that support courses such as Environmental Health, Methodological Approaches in Public Health, and Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health. Candidates will also be encouraged to develop new elective courses
that align with their substantive area of expertise within environmental health and justice.
Candidates are also expected to perform meaningful service on department, college, and university committees; participate in departmental activities; serve their profession/discipline and/and community partners (if appropriate); and complete other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a Ph.D., DrPH, or equivalent doctoral degree with expertise in environmental health, environmental sciences, environmental justice, or closely related social/behavioral science. Persons who will have their doctoral degree conferred by August 15, 2021 are eligible to apply. Candidates who additionally possess an MPH degree in any public health discipline are highly valued. The College is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the academic community’s diversity and excellence at Wayne State University.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and engaged academic unit collectively dedicated to addressing and eliminating health disparities. Our faculty have achieved national and international reputations for excellence in their respective fields of research including mental health and suicide prevention, gender and reproductive health, patient-centered outcomes
assessment, immigrant health, and chronic disease prevention. Our instructors are public health professionals working in city and county health departments, hospitals and health care institutions, and non-profit organizations in our region. The undergraduate-serving Department of Public Health is one of twenty academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
