Position Description

The Finance and Administrative Services Department (FAS) is seeking a conscientious and proactive Safety Program Officer (Sr. Safety & Health Specialist) to lead safety operations in a large and complex department comprised of 10 divisions, including Fleet Management, Facility Operations, the Seattle Animal Shelter and more. 

The Safety Program Officer is a key member of the Human Resources Division and the sole safety professional for FAS. This position collaborates across work groups, divisions and with other City personnel to promote a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees. Success in this role hinges on the ability to build collaborative relationships, connect with a diverse staff in a broad scope of positions, and center equity in all operations, as well as a commitment to promoting a safe and healthy work culture. Additionally, you will need to combine the energy and passion for establishing programs often found in start-up cultures with the strategy of implementing within a government organization with many stakeholders and formal processes for review all as a team of one.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advise all levels of management and employees on safe work practices.
  • Write in-depth safety programs, forms, and processes on topics such as respiratory protection, fall protection, vehicle safety, and caring for stray animals.
  • Proactively research new fields to adopt safety procedures and best practices.
  • Lead department compliance with state and federal regulations such as reporting, training, and posting requirements. 
  • Administer the return-to-work program to help injured employees return to full duty after a workplace injury.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for interactions with the Workers’ Compensation Unit.
  • Partner with Sr. HR Business Partners and the HR Leave Administrator to provide reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Be an active member of safety committees, facilitate discussion, and be a subject matter expert in helping to resolve safety concerns that are raised.
  • Provide in-person and virtual trainings and safety orientations such as new employee onboarding, emergency preparedness, and accident prevention.
  • Spend time in the field with work units to understand their scope of work and help identify preventative safety solutions.
  • Plan, develop, and track mandatory and voluntary safety training.
  • Conduct in-person site inspections and safety audits and make recommendations for risk mitigation. 
  • Administer the department’s Commercial Driver License (CDL) drug and alcohol testing program. 
  • Oversee annual hearing conservation program for eligible employees.
  • Audit incident investigations, identify discrepancies, and drive corrective actions as needed.
  • Work with management to implement recommendations and lessons learned for continuous quality improvement with respect to workforce health and safety.
  • Prepare department-wide communications for major health or safety events.
  • Coordinate ergonomic assessments and ensure implementation of recommendations.
  • Respond to accident scenes and emergent safety situations and work collaboratively with emergency response personnel.
  • Represent FAS at the Citywide Safety Officers meeting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Human Resources, Public Administration or a related field;

Experience:  Three years of experience in a safety, health, or related field.

(Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.)Licenses: Current Washington State driver’s license required.

The most successful candidates will possess the following: 

  • Expertise in safety rules, regulations, and programming in the public sector. 
  • Experience in ADA, Workers’ Comp, and/or leave administration.
  • Knowledge and experience in creating and maintaining safety performance metrics. 
  • Knowledge and experience conducting investigations and report drafting.
  • Demonstrated skills including excellent oral and written communication and training skills.

Public Health is seeking a skilled Environmental Scientist III (Environmental Health Epidemiologist) with expertise in environmental epidemiology and toxicology to support the department’s work in reducing exposure to harmful chemicals. The incumbent will report to the Environmental Health Services Division’s Senior Toxicologist and work with a team of three providing expertise to the Environmental Health Services Division, and other Departments within King County government, with duties that include but are not limited to: serving technical needs for over 160 staff in the Division; enhancing understanding and reducing human and environmental exposures to toxic chemicals and environmental toxins; and identifying and utilizing health data that can be more effectively linked to toxic-related impacts.

The Environmental Health Scientist will apply quantitative and qualitative scientific research methods to characterize health effects of environmental exposures and work with colleagues and communication staff to share findings for a wide range of audiences, including the public. The candidate must be highly skilled in problem-solving, with expertise in epidemiology and a strong understanding of toxicology. Familiarity with and commitment to addressing environmental inequities in communities exposed to cumulative stressors through an equity and social justice lens is required. Work Schedule

Typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There may be occasional evenings and weekends and some travel. This is an Exempt position and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible.

Work Location

The Environmental Health Services team works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. Job Duties

As the Environmental Health Epidemiologist, you will play a vital role to:

  • Identify environmental health-related data sources and work to link them to the Departmental or other health assessment data to improve understanding of environmental and health outcomes, with a large focus on toxics.
  • Design research and feasibility studies to anticipate future epidemiological needs of the community relevant to exposures to toxics and other environmental health hazards.
  • Seek project funding and lead/advise grants or other projects related to toxics, biomonitoring, and health outcomes that link environmental concentrations to human exposures and health outcomes.
  • Lead epidemiological analyses, including the identification of trends in health outcomes, risk profiles, and factors of specific communities, and program impacts on health risk behaviors.
  • Apply scientifically rigorous quantitative methods to identify, evaluate, and characterize the magnitude, severity, and distribution of health effects.
  • Interpret and analyze data and communicate findings to a wide variety of audiences (e.g., scientific publications, reports, lectures, seminars, press releases, social media, planning documents, and for community meetings, senior leadership, and policymakers).
  • Participate in responses to environmental health emergencies related to toxic exposures, such as wildfires, extreme heat, flooding events, and acute toxic exposures, by designing and using quick-response disaster epidemiology studies.
  • Advise on data quality and management and recommend/develop/implement new changes to surveillance systems and other data systems.
  • Collaborate within the Department and with external partners (e.g., the state health department, academia, community) on relevant studies, data systems, and data collection.
  • Stay up to date on the relevant scientific literature and new innovative approaches related to toxicology, environmental health, and contaminants of emerging concern.
  • Foster awareness and practice of the principles of equity and social justice in alignment with the King County Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan.

Overview

The EHS Coordinator partners with the site’s EHS Manager to drive safety initiatives and culture at the Vancouver site. Schedule will be Tuesday – Saturday, 6:00am – 2:30pm with expected OT of normally no more than 5 hours a week but occasionally up to 15-20 hours.Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance to PepsiCo Global Environmental Health & Safety Standards (GEHSMS):
    • Assist in providing leadership for the implementation, enforcement and continuous improvement of the Sites environmental, health and safety policies and processes
    • Support Safety/Environmental programs owners and coordinate quarterly program reviews
    • Coordinate Safety/Environmental audits & assessments to achieve a Best In Class status
  • Support Internal Safety and Environmental Agenda
    • Conduct EHS Investigations for accident, incident and near-miss investigations, and provide recommendations for process, procedure or equipment changes to eliminate future occurrences. Ensure completion to over 95% of on-time investigations and reporting
    • Ensure over 95% completion of all authorized and GA trainings
    • Perform and lead monthly inspections of the facility

    • Perform job hazard and job safety analyses, citing specific hazards and methods for remediation
    • Maintain the sites risk register based upon the results of the job hazard assessment

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The expected compensation range for this position is between $45,000 – $71,800.

Job Description

The Department of Ecology is hiring a Climate Rules Engagement Intern (Administrative Intern 2) within the Climate Pollution Reduction Program.

This is a temporary position for two months at 40 hours per week, or 320 hours total.

Location:

  • Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
  • Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

Schedule:

  • This position is eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.
  • A minimum of one day per week is required in the office. The specific number of days in the office will be agreed to by the successful candidate and the supervisor. There will be in-person training opportunities that may require the successful candidate to be in the office more than one day per week.

As the Climate Rules Engagement Intern, your work will support the rulemaking process by helping plan and facilitate public meetings on climate rules, preparing documents and information on rulemaking for websites, and identifying opportunities to increase engagement and connection with community members and environmental justice organizations whose participation in rulemaking and public meetings are vital. Duties will include:

  • Assist with planning and facilitating public hearings and public meetings for climate rule processes.
  • Assist in developing presentations for public hearings and public meetings for climate rule processes.
  • Contact identified environmental justice organizations to invite their comment on our rulemakings and attendance at our meetings.
  • Develop engaging activities to be used in public meetings to encourage public comment.

Four years of experience and/or education in public policy, environmental science, environmental policy, communications, or a related field.

Duties

This position is critical in supporting the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) process for the State of Washington. In this role, you will serve as the point of contact for all SEPA related questions for Dept. of Ecology’s Eastern Region Office. You will review project submittals to the SEPA register for completeness, coordinate comment periods for internal staff, and make sure comments are delivered to the lead agency.

  • Ensure submissions to the SEPA Register are complete and entered into the database accurately. 
  • Ensure SEPA documents are appropriately screened by Ecology staff for environment impacts.

  • You will analyze accident and injury reports to discover trends and mishap causes to develop recommendations for reducing or eliminating the hazards.

The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:

  1. Professional registration or licensure — Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1 , or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. Summary

King County’s Finance and Business Operations Division, Procurement & Payables section, is seeking a Sustainable Purchasing Graduate Intern to join our Education, Compliance and Training team!

This position is expected to begin in May or June and will continue through the 2025/2026 academic year. Interns must be enrolled in a Graduate (Master’s) program for the full duration of the internship and may be asked to provide proof of enrollment at any time. Typically, interns work part-time (10-20 hours per week) during the academic term and may work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer and school breaks.

Position Information:

  • Work Site Details: The work associated with this position will primarily be hybrid. FBOD employees are currently required to work two assigned days a week in the Seattle office. In office requirements may change as required by King County business needs.

Overview of Position

The Department of Ecology is hiring a Climate Pollution Reduction Rulemaking Planner (Environmental Planner 3) (In-Training) within the Climate Pollution Reduction Program (CPRP).

This is a project position that is funded until June 30, 2026.

Location:

  • Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
  • Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

Schedule:

  • This position is eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.

Duties

As the Climate Pollution Reduction Rulemaking Planner in the Policy and Planning Section, you will project manage and engage with rulemaking and projects that provide the regulatory foundation to ensure a healthy environment for Washingtonians. You’ll be analyzing and developing rules to implement major climate pollution reduction legislation, such as the Motor Vehicle Emissions Standards, Limiting Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Hydrofluorocarbons Emissions Reduction, Climate Commitment Act, and the Clean Fuels Program. 

In this role, you will orchestrate the development of rules and plans to protect public health and the environment. You’ll engage with technical experts throughout the Department of Ecology for rule development, as well as provide expertise and policy development assistance to other teams throughout the program. Additional duties will include: 

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of rulemaking and policy related to all aspects of climate pollution regulations.

About the Climate Pollution Reduction Program

The Climate Pollution Reduction Program’s (CPRP’s) mission is to implement policies and programs to reduce carbon emissions in the state of Washington so that the state meets its statutory greenhouse gas emission limits. The CPRP focuses long term, requiring creative and strategic decision making for implementation to achieve broad statewide and interstate success reducing carbon emissions in the state of Washington so residents have a healthy environment and climate.
