This internship is designed to allow students to gain a firsthand perspective on the day-to-day responsibilities of environmental health professionals, make invaluable connections with those working in the field, and consider careers working in state, tribal, local, or territorial environmental public health agencies following graduation.

Eligibility

To be considered as an intern for this program, students need to:

  • Attend an environmental health academic program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC) for undergraduate or graduate programs.
  • Be a current sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student at the time the application is submitted and have completed at least one full year of academic training with most courses in environmental health focus areas.
  • Be enrolled as a student during the internship. Students who will graduate prior to the internship session will not be eligible to participate.
  • Have active health insurance.

International students are eligible to apply.

Benefits

  • $6,000 for undergraduate and $8,000 for graduate environmental health student interns through funding from CDC for a 400-hour internship to cover lodging, food, and incidental expenses
  • Students who relocate for an in-person internship experience will be offered an additional need-based relocation allowance starting at $500
  • Participation in a series of environmental health professional career mentorship sessions with current environmental health professionals working in state, tribal, local, or territorial health agencies
  • Professional development learning sessions provided by our staff
  • Sustained support for promoting internship work through publications and media
  • A one-year NEHA student membership

Internship Format

To allow flexibility for students, NEPHIP now offers the internship experience via virtual, in-person/on-site, or hybrid formats depending on student and host program needs.

Project Types

Projects are open to a wide variety of environmental public health issues and program needs identified by environmental public health host sites. Review our NEPHIP Student Guide for project examples and considerations.

Matching

Our staff will match the selected interns with the host environmental public health programs based on geolocation preferences, interests, and professional goals that align with opportunities at the host program. NEHA cannot guarantee the preferred placement.

Terms of Agreement

All arrangements for the internship, including start and end dates, work hours or timesheet, sick policy, etc. should be made by the academic program in partnership with the intern and host program mentor to meet academic guidelines and requirements. For the student to receive funding, we must receive signed documentation that internship arrangements have been approved by the academic program, student, and host program. Review the NEPHIP Student Guide to understand what is expected.

Funding Details

The CDC’s Water, Food, and Environmental Health Services Branch is providing funding to support up to 50 environmental health undergraduate and graduate college students currently enrolled in a National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC) accredited institution in internships at state, tribal, local, and territorial environmental public health agencies for each year.

Inside the Role

Interns will gain knowledge and experience through exciting and real-life learning opportunities. Interns must work in accordance with DTNA’s core values of passion, respect, integrity and discipline. Internship positions can be located at various DTNA locations across the US. We are looking for high performing and motivated individuals in various areas within DTNA organizations. DTNA internships begin each summer in May or June.

Interns in this role may have the opportunity to transition into a full-time position subject to manager evaluations and business availability.

The primary objective for this internship is to assist the Product Validation Engineering (PVE) Safety team in ensuring a safer and healthier work environment for all employees.

The intern will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of occupational safety and health while contributing to our efforts to maintain compliance with relevant regulations and standards. Additionally, the intern will provide extra assistance to fine-tune our current processes and dive deep into inspections, ensuring the continuous improvement of our safety protocols.

What You Drive at DTNA

Work under the guidance and supervision of PVE Safety and will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Conduct safety inspections, audits, and Gemba walks to identify potential hazards and safety violations
  • Assist in the development and implementation of safety policies, standard operating procedures, assessments, and training programs
  • Analyze and assist in incident investigations
  • Maintain and update the safety data sheets (SDS) inventory and any applicable secondary container labels
  • Assist with safety awareness campaigns and initiatives
  • Manage documentation of training, Toolbox Talks, and other related processes

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s/PhD Program from an accredited college/university or have graduated within the last 12 months. 
  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from an accredited OSH program or related field.
  • GSP/ASP preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards (OR OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, etc.).
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills.
  • Creative mindset.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply consulting strategies on a variety of occupational safety and health issues, focusing on enhancing the health and well-being of Oregon workers.
  • Assist safety and health staff with onsite consultations and analyses of a variety of policyholders’ work environments. Assess exposure to a variety of physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, using occupational health regulations, standards, and best practices to reduce and/or eliminate safety and health risks.
  • Evaluate and document observations, analysis findings, and recommendations. Author technical reports and correspondence for policyholders; submit for internal quality review.
  • Research, analyze, and summarize occupational safety and health issues and trends using a variety of data sources and systems. Develop recommendations to improve outcomes.
  • Work with SAIF staff as needed to review, update, or create safety and health resources, web content, or training for our customers.
  • Learn about the collaboration between safety and health and workers’ compensation insurance in Oregon. Learn about stakeholders and business partners.
  • Explore diverse perspectives and consistently behave sensitively toward differences in cultural norms, expectations, and ways of communicating. Work effectively with others who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and/or work styles.
  • Continually sustain the Inclusive Leadership Competencies (ILC) through the Explorer level on an annual basis.
  • This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy. 

Required qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, nursing, public health, or environment safety and health.

Recommended qualifications

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team doing complex, confidential work.
  • Superior problem-solving, research, and writing skills demonstrating an ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft products such as MS Office, MS Outlook, and Office 365.
  • Experience using industrial hygiene and ergonomic equipment used to assess exposures is preferred.
  • Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.

Timeframe: Approximately 12 weeks during summer break 2025

Location: Internship will be based out of our corporate office in Salem, Oregon

Pay: $24.00 per hour
