Human Factors Engineer (Robotics Research)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Division of Safety Research (DSR), has an exciting career opportunity for a Fellowship position to conduct research associated with robotics and emerging technologies. The Division serves as the focal point for traumatic injury control research at NIOSH which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NIOSH is the federal institute that conducts research and makes recommendations for preventing work-related injuries, illnesses and deaths.

The Fellow will conduct research to:
• evaluate robotics technologies as preventive measures for existingworkplace hazards
• develop interventions to reduce robot-related injury incidents andimprove the safety and well-being of human workers working with roboticstechnologies, and
• contribute to the development of general and domain-specific metricsfor evaluating the safety of robots and human-robot interaction inworkplaces.

Applicants should have a masters or doctoral degree in human factor engineering, industrial engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, or similar program; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work both in a team environment and independently.

The work is conducted in a state-of-the-art occupational safety and health research facility located in Morgantown, West Virginia. Morgantown is one of the top small cities in the United States, with quality schools, outdoor recreation and sports, and various cultural activities. The NIOSH facility is adjacent to West Virginia University with easy access to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

The IMSE department is seeking applicants working in all areas, with an emphasis given to those working in Human Factors/Ergonomics, Supply Chain Management, or Simulation. Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a closely related field, be eligible to work in the United States, and have excellent communication skills. Candidates who demonstrate the ability to conduct high quality, methodologically innovative research, and have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply. Candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses (including distance education) and advise PhD students and experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable. The Position

Responsibilities of the position include:



Develop an independent research portfolio in the area of traumatic injury and violence prevention (e.g., develop grant proposals for diverse funding sources including NIH, CDC and foundations; learn to lead large epidemiologic studies)

Conduct and support epidemiologic studies of traumatic injury and violence prevention with human populations

Develop and lead statistical analysis plans for injury and violence prevention projects such as in homicide/suicide, opioid overdose, falls in older adults, transportation and workplace violence

Develop dissemination materials for internal and external partners, such as policy briefs and reports

Develop dissemination materials for research audiences, such as peer-reviewed manuscripts and conference presentations

Supervise students with experiential learning projects

Support advancement of the UI Injury Prevention Research Center’s core mission

Education Requirement:

Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a tenure track full-time faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the area of Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Health. The position will be housed in the College of Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture (CCHSA). The successful candidate will be expected to establish and grow a research program in ergonomics and musculoskeletal health in the context of the Mission and Vision of the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture (www.cchsa.usask.ca). CCHSA is home to a remarkable ergonomics lab with capacity to study musculoskeletal hazards and health in agriculture and other industries. The 70 square-meter Ergonomics Laboratory facility at the CFI-funded National Agricultural Industrial Hygiene Laboratory (NAIHL) within CCHSA provides access to equipment for vibration simulation and kinematic assessments of simulated work: 6-degree-of-freedom programmable robotic platform to safely simulate occupational whole body vibration; a 10-camera Vicon motion capture system; 60cm x 90cm integrated force platform; electromyography suite; and Novel Pedar foot pressure sensors. In addition, the lab has a well-appointed complement of measurement equipment appropriate for field investigations such as electromyography, goniometry, inertial sensors, hand-arm vibration, whole-body vibration, and force. The successful candidate would be expected to lead this laboratory and develop and expand their research program in ergonomics and musculoskeletal health with this capacity in mind, but not necessarily limited to it depending on research opportunities and interests. In addition to a leading research program, the candidate will be expected to: secure external research funding; work collaboratively with members from CCHSA, the Department of Medicine, and other units on campus; supervise postdoctoral fellows and graduate students; and contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching.

Applicants must have a PhD and / or MD degree or equivalent, postdoctoral research experience, have a demonstrated or emerging record of research productivity, demonstrate interest and ability to engage in scholarly activity, and be committed to undergraduate and graduate education. Candidates must have strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. Previous experience in ergonomics and musculoskeletal health-related research in a rural or agricultural context is an asset but not necessary.
