A MESSAGE FROM BECKY JOHNSON, VP for OSU CASCADES:
We are really looking forward to seeing the Provost’s Council in Bend for the PC retreat and grand opening of Tykeson Hall on our new campus! Everything is going really well, and on schedule, but things are pretty hectic with the move and making sure everything is operational. In an ordinary year, this period of time before classes start would be a time when we would have facilities available for Corvallis colleagues to schedule meetings over here. Unfortunately, we are unable to do that this year as we are literally moving in furniture and people, and testing technology.
Our Fall term is also going to be very tight for space, because four classrooms and additional meeting space in our Dining Hall will not be finished until December. We are getting lots of requests from our Corvallis colleagues to use rooms at OSU-Cascades for meetings in Bend, and unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate them this Fall. In January we would be happy to entertain requests for meeting space, depending on classroom and meeting room availability. And, of course, if you’re just in Bend for some other reason and want to visit, you’re always welcome.
OSRAA CH CH CH CH CHANGES!
FROM PAT HAWK AND SANDY COBB: Today’s a great day for congratulations! Not only can we celebrate Jim Nightengale’s new position in BEBC as an Accountant 2 (his last day with us will be August 30), I’m very pleased to announce our two Grant and Contract Officer positions have been filled. Our two newest Grant and Contract Officers are Cleo Klepzig and Dawn Wagner, and you should know both of them! Both have start date in their new positions of August 22. Please join me in congratulating Jim, Cleo and Dawn!
UNIVERSITY DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The 2016 University Day Expo will be on Mon., Sept. 19 from noon-2 p.m. at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. The expo is designed to showcase the work and opportunities provided by units at OSU, to fellow staff and faculty. We are looking for volunteers for the Research Office booth. If you would like to volunteer please contact Mimi in the front office. University Day is a fun and relaxed event…we hope you can volunteer a bit of your time or stop by and say hi!
FROM CINDY SAGERS: Two office spaces in the RO have been vacated by recent resignations. The RO is offering one of these spaces to the sixth floor to help with a space crunch as they fill new positions, accommodate interim administrators, and provide office space for retirees on 1039. Dr. Brenda McComb will retire on July 30th and take on 1039 status to assist the interim VP Academic Affairs transition to the position. I have invited Brenda to relocate from the sixth floor to the RO in early August as she moves into 1039 status. This arrangement is temporary and will be superseded by demands for new office space in the RO. Please join me in welcoming Brenda to the RO.
YOU ARE INVITED: EQUITY AND INCLUSION SPEAKER DR. SHERWOOD SMITH

An experienced diversity and organizational development professional, Dr. Sherwood Smith’s work involves professional development training for faculty and staff, conducting research and teaching graduate courses in Educational Foundations and undergraduate courses in Human Development & Family Studies. His presentation will examine effective strategies for advancing institutional diversity, equity and inclusion work including: organizational and systemic analysis, strategic planning, alignment and coordination of institutional initiatives, and localizing individual influence to create change. You can learn more about Dr. Smith here. During his time on campus, Dr. Smith will consult with the Office of Institutional Diversity and also meet with Diversity & Cultural Engagement, Athletics and senior administrators. For questions, including those related to ability, please contact Pamela Johnson in the Office of Institutional Diversity at 541-737-1065, or diversity@oregonstate.edu.
DRONES!
Ben Lester, our RO UAS student and Mark Peters assisted in the management of the Northwest Qualified Drone race in Bend on Saturday. It was a great event with a lot of OSU presence. Here is a clip from the racer’s perspective. News story here.
We interviewed a number of exceptional candidates for the Assistant VP for Research Integrity (AVPRI) position….thanks to all of you who were able to participate in those meetings. The search committee and Cindy did their very best to recruit the most qualified candidates, but all accepted competing offers. Therefore, Cindy has announced this a failed search. We intend to re-compete the position in one year. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that Mark Peters has agreed to continue in his current capacity as interim director for the ORI. Please join me in thanking Mark for his continued service in this position and please let Cindy know if you have any further questions.
OSRAA STAFFING UPDATE
FROM PAT HAWK: I want to let you know how excited I am to announce that Kim Calvery is transitioning to a new position entitled Research Program Operations Officer. While it is a position still residing within OSRAA and reporting to me, Kim will be physically located in the CEOAS Administration Building. Kim’s new position is responsible for the business and strategic planning, and operational execution and oversight of our Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV) program and the Marine Operations Program. These are two highly visible and high-risk projects that need a higher level of operational support that will assist OSU in successful management of both projects. There are very few people, if any, at OSU that have Kim’s knowledge on both our financial system and grant regulations. Kim was part of the BSR site visit process, so she has a good understanding of the issues NSF reported. She has also assisted with some of the analysis required by the NSF Inspector General audit on Ship Operations. Kim has already begun her transition to this new position, so I have disbanded the Research Costing and Analysis Unit. Rachel Polansky and Jenny James have joined the Cash and Financial Management Unit and now report to Sandy Cobb.
Some other exciting news that I wanted to share is that OSRAA received funding for a new position. In a year where many departments have only received “flat funding”, this is very exciting and tells me that OSU Administration recognizes the importance of our offices’ functions. After much discussion, the OSRAA Management Team determined that an additional Assistant Grant and Contract Officer is our most pressing need. The bittersweet news that accompanies this exciting news is that Larry Weymouth has decided to resign his position, moving to a half-time appointment for the month of August, with August 31 being his last day. Larry came to us in January 2013 after taking retirement from a lengthy career at CH2M Hill. Mark Bierly will be leading the Search Committee and we will recruit for two Assistant Grant and Contract Officers—one being a brand new position, and one being a replacement for Larry.
COPIER UPDATE- B306 and B308
By request, CN has updated the copier/printer list for B306 and B308. If you are in B306 or B308, you now have access in your printer list to both of the Ricoh copiers. In case your copier goes down, there will be the other one available. Any questions or if you don’t see the printer in your list of printers, please contact Stephen at Stephen.Hotard@oregonstate.edu
Dr. Roy Haggerty has been appointed by VP for Research, Cindy Sagers, as Associate Vice President for Research. His appointment will become effective on August 30, 2016. Dr. Haggerty is currently the interim Dean of the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and the Hollis M. Dole Professor of Environmental Geology at OSU. Roy has been an OSU faculty member since 1996 and served as head of the geology program from 2003-2006. He is a highly regarded hydrologist with expertise in nutrient and energy flow in streams, and the movement of contaminants in groundwater. He graduated from the University of Alberta and holds graduate degrees in hydrology from Stanford University. Dr. Haggerty takes on the position of Associate Vice President following Dr. Rich Holdren’s retirement on June 30, 2016. We thank Rich for his vital role in shaping the success of the Office of Research over the past sixteen years. Please join us in welcoming Roy to his new position in the Research Office.
SVP FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, BRENDA MCCOMB, RETIRING
Dr. Brenda McComb recently announced her decision to step down from her appointment as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and retire effective August 1, 2016. Brenda will continue on a part time basis to take some projects to closure and to help ensure a smooth transition in Academic Affairs. Interim Provost, Ron Adams, plans to fill the Senior Vice Provost position as quickly as possible, and President Ray will appoint a new co-chair for the Leadership Council for Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice later this summer – a role in which Brenda also served. We will share additional information with you as it becomes available.
LEADERSHIP CHANGES/BUILDING UPDATE- COLLEGE OF FORESTRY
Thomas Maness, Dean of the College of Forestry, will be away from the College for health reasons from July 1 to September 30. During this period, Senior Associate Dean Jim Johnson has agreed to lead the College as Acting Dean. Adrienne Wonhof will continue to support the Dean. The College has also hired a new Associate Dean for Research, Anthony Davis. Anthony will join us on campus on September 19. At that time, Steve Tesch will transition to work on special projects until his April 2017 retirement. Anthony and Steve are working collaboratively to ensure the handover goes as smoothly as possible and I thank them both for their efforts. Additionally, Peavy Hall is being vacated and will start to come down in August. Much of the building is being recycled, and some components will appear in the new building. Construction starts in the Fall.
CENTER FOR LATIN@ STUDIES AND ENGAGEMENT (CL@SE) – STATUS UPDATE
CL@SE was created as an innovation, combining both research and engagement addressing Latino issues in Oregon and the nation. In its short history, CL@SE has succeeded in building a network of Latino partners throughout Oregon and beyond.Since its inception in 2012, CL@SE has been supported by multiple offices across campus: Office of the Provost, Office of Research, Deans of the Colleges of Education and Liberal Arts and the Division of University Outreach and Engagement. At OSU, all centers and institutes are subject to periodic reviews. Detailed in the original proposal was a plan for “…a potential two-year renewal based on assessment of outcomes after three years.” The review initiated in 2016 revealed that the center was falling short of academic expectations in terms of grants and publications, and as of March 2016 was facing a projected budget deficit of approximately $120,000. We are starting a process to strengthen CL@SE and align its structure and function with available resources. Institutional partners involved in this effort will include the Office of Diversity & Cultural Engagement, the Chief Diversity Officer, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, CL@SE associate directors, and the CL@SE advisory council. This process will include the evaluation of CL@SE’s mission, strategic vision, organizational structure, and business plan.
Currently, CL@SE staff includes:
• Daniel López-Cevallos, CL@SE Associate Director of Research
• Ana Gomez-Diazgranados, CL@SE Associate Director of Engagement
• Maydra Valencia, Juntos Coordinator and CL@SE Associate Director of Engagement Oregon Coast, (supported by O&E).
Ana and Daniel will continue in their full capacities as associate directors of CL@SE with committed funding support from the Research Office and the Division of Outreach and Engagement. Their roles are to promote the center and its mission, to enrich partnerships with Latino communities across Oregon, and to oversee operations within the CL@SE office, including supervision of student interns. As we proceed, we plan to involve OSU and external stakeholder community in a facilitated forum this fall to refine needed CL@SE leadership, strategic priorities and a business plan for going forward.
