Shameless Self Promotion: Jane (me) received her first ever academic award for her work researching a paper on a case of police brutality in Portland, OR in 1971. Her social justice history professor, Dr. Marisa Chappell, presented her with the Barbara Bennett Peterson History Award which included a cash award in addition to this really neat wooden bowl from Hawaii (where Dr. Petersen resides). OSU SPINOUTS ‘CLEAN UP’ AT WILLAMETTE ANGEL CONFERENCE

Two clean technology companies affiliated with Oregon State University were among the top finalists at the 2018 Willamette Angel Conference (WAC). Both companies are graduates of the OSU Advantage Accelerator program. “It was great to see two of our graduates gain additional funding as they start to ramp,” said Karl Mundorff, Director of the Accelerator. The Accelerator assists local startup companies in all stages of their growth and supports the regional innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Bend-based Onboard Dynamics received a $100,000 investment. The company offers a low-cost system for natural gas compression for commercial fleet operators. Corvallis-based eChemion received a $75,000 investment. The company provides technology that dramatically enhances the lifespan of grid energy storage batteries. Corvallis-based Wisedoc, also an Accelerator client company, won the Speed Pitch competition. Wisedoc received a $2,500 prize for winning the competition. The company is developing software to help researchers quickly and easily format journal articles for submission. The 2018 Conference raised $495,000 from local angel investors and including Willamette Valley Capital Investors. The WAC also utilizes student interns from Oregon State University to perform due diligence work. This year’s interns included five from OSU: Shanmukh Prasad Challa, Brianna Renee Falsetto, Scott Laughin, Chiara Marzi, and Brett Wilkerson. “We are very proud to partner with the Willamette Angel Conference in providing our student interns a great experiential opportunity to develop their analytical skills and be a true member of the diligence teams,” said Mundorff. REMINDER- PLEASE COMPLETE OSU FACULTY & STAFF CLIMATE SURVEY

On May 7 you were invited to participate in the 2018 Faculty and Staff Climate Survey. To those of you that have already submitted your responses, thank you very much and my apologies for this repeat email. The survey does not contain identifying information, so we don’t have a means to screen out those that have already responded. If you already submitted, no need to read further. If you have not yet taken the survey, you may click the link or copy and paste the following into your browser:
http://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3HH9O1J5Cp3hxYh

This survey is an important part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion and is integral to our efforts to create a welcoming environment at Oregon State University. Started in 2014, this biennial survey is the comprehensive source for widely gauging the opinions of employees and broadly measuring various aspects of the work environment. The survey is one part of OSU’s broader efforts to foster a welcoming, inclusive campus climate. The survey will remain open until June 6, 2018 and results will be analyzed over summer term by the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID). The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The OID is administering this survey and securely storing responses.  In an effort to hear from as many people as possible, we will be offering a $25 incentive to 50 randomly selected participants for this survey. The information you enter for the incentive will not be linked to your responses to the Campus Climate Survey so that your responses will remain anonymous. Please complete the survey by June 6, 2018. Questions about the survey can be directed to OID at diversity@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-1063.

TAYLOR’S AMAZING ALASKA TRIP

The United States Geological Survey – Alaskan Science Center has been monitoring the recolonization efforts of sea otters in south east Alaska since 2002 when they first started to appear in the area after reaching virtual extinction. The RO’s very own Diving and Saftey maverick, Taylor Eaton, was invited to join them in this effort because Oregon State University and USGS have a well-established collaborative research partnership and they needed additional personal for this field project. The focus of this ongoing long term ecological monitoring project is to study sea otter effects on shallow benthic communities in Glacier Bay National Park. Taylor’s task was to provide ship operation support and to conduct subtidal benthic monitoring surveys using SCUBA to assess the invertebrate and algal community structure in Glacier Bay and what effects increasing sea otter population might have on those communities. Check out the photo of the week for a visual!

NSF AUDIT UPDATE

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of the Inspector General has notified Oregon State University that it will be performing an incurred cost audit of awards issued to OSU and filed during the audit period beginning March 1, 2015 through February 28, 2018. It is important to note that audits of this nature routinely are performed at major research institutions around the country, including our peer land grant universities. OSRAA is teaming with Business Affairs and Audit Services on this. If you receive questions or have any of your own, please direct them to Pat Hawk.

A MESSAGE FROM CINDY

A brief note to relay information on the status of the federal FY18 budget. APLU President Peter McPherson has sent along a summary of the gains for science in the pending legislation (click here). I will continue to monitor the status of the budget talks and communicate progress on the hill, but anticipate no shut-down this week.

NEWS FROM OSRAA

THREE PIECES OF NEWS TO SHARE: It’s been a three-year journey, but we have “gone live” with a Banner process that will automatically load approved proposal data from Cayuse to Banner!

What this means is that we will stop manually entering each proposal.  We will also have to rely upon accuracy in all of our proposal data fields and we will have to ensure that our Sponsor Names match with Banner.  For example, we will have to start using “National Science Foundation” instead of the Directorate names, and we will have to use “USDA Forest Service” instead of “Rocky Mountain Research Station.” Mark will be receiving “exception reports” on items that don’t automatically load so that we can continue to “de-bug” this process.  But this is a huge step!

Second, Chad Cropley has let me know that some of OSRAA’s monitors may not work with Banner 9.  This means we will likely have to replace some of our older monitors.  He will be performing an inventory of which ones need to be replaced.  I would like to get all of these replaced before the end of June.  Stay tuned for more information on this.

Last, but not least, please plan for a “hallway celebration” on March 29 to both Aedra and Branita!  I haven’t figured out whether it’s a morning or afternoon event, but I’ll also be announcing this at today’s OSRAA Outreach and Education meeting.

OSU SAFETY EMPHASIS EXPANDING

FROM PROVOST FESER: Fortunately, at Oregon State University we have not experienced the kinds of acts of violence that have occurred at other universities and schools around the country. Yet, we need to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of the university community through security measures, policing practices, and our collective awareness and reporting. OSU’s Department of Public Safety leads our university wide safety and security effort. This work is in partnership with state and local law enforcement and public safety agencies throughout Oregon, including the Oregon State Police, the Corvallis police and fire departments, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office in Corvallis, the Bend police and fire departments, and many other agencies statewide. Read more about OSU’s safety plans Safety Update March 2018, and please try to attend our RO All Staff on April 12 at 10:30am in MU 104 where Suzanne Tannenbaum will discuss safety for the RO in more depth.
