A MESSAGE FROM CINDY

A brief note to relay information on the status of the federal FY18 budget. APLU President Peter McPherson has sent along a summary of the gains for science in the pending legislation (click here). This is great news for our campus community and for the nation. Thanks to all who communicated your support of science and scientists in the U.S. Bravo! I will continue to monitor the status of the budget talks and communicate progress on the hill, but anticipate no shut-down this week.

NEWS FROM OSRAA

THREE PIECES OF NEWS TO SHARE: It’s been a three-year journey, but we have “gone live” with a Banner process that will automatically load approved proposal data from Cayuse to Banner!

What this means is that we will stop manually entering each proposal.  We will also have to rely upon accuracy in all of our proposal data fields and we will have to ensure that our Sponsor Names match with Banner.  For example, we will have to start using “National Science Foundation” instead of the Directorate names, and we will have to use “USDA Forest Service” instead of “Rocky Mountain Research Station.” Mark will be receiving “exception reports” on items that don’t automatically load so that we can continue to “de-bug” this process.  But this is a huge step!

Second, Chad Cropley has let me know that some of OSRAA’s monitors may not work with Banner 9.  This means we will likely have to replace some of our older monitors.  He will be performing an inventory of which ones need to be replaced.  I would like to get all of these replaced before the end of June.  Stay tuned for more information on this.

Last, but not least, please plan for a “hallway celebration” on March 29 to both Aedra and Branita!  I haven’t figured out whether it’s a morning or afternoon event, but I’ll also be announcing this at today’s OSRAA Outreach and Education meeting.

OSU SAFETY EMPHASIS EXPANDING

FROM PROVOST FESER: Fortunately, at Oregon State University we have not experienced the kinds of acts of violence that have occurred at other universities and schools around the country. Yet, we need to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of the university community through security measures, policing practices, and our collective awareness and reporting. OSU’s Department of Public Safety leads our university wide safety and security effort. This work is in partnership with state and local law enforcement and public safety agencies throughout Oregon, including the Oregon State Police, the Corvallis police and fire departments, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office in Corvallis, the Bend police and fire departments, and many other agencies statewide. Read more about OSU’s safety plans Safety Update March 2018, and please try to attend our RO All Staff on April 12 at 10:30am in MU 104 where Suzanne Tannenbaum will discuss safety for the RO in more depth.
