Quality Teaching (QT) Talk – Academic Integrity and Equity

- Plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct have historically been conceptualized as the intentional and rational decision to cheat, however these assumptions neglect many underlying factors, both environmental and individual, that lead to students taking these shortcuts. Building from current literature, the session will provide pedagogical practices to support students’ sense of community and connection and, in the process, explore how this may lead to fewer instances of academic misconduct.

- Presenter: Shana Carpenter, Ph.D., School of Psychological Science
- The research on “retrieval practice,” shows that practice questions following a lecture or other learning activity significantly boosts students’ learning. Attendees will be introduced to new research on the positive effects of asking “pre-questions” prior to a learning activity. The session will review various ways that pre-questions have been incorporated into learning activities, and how they can be leveraged to improve student learning and engagement in real courses.

Navigating the Classroom of Tomorrow: Exploring the Role of AI in Higher Education

- Have you been wondering about the role of Artificial Intelligence in higher education and its implications for the classroom of the future? Are you curious about how AI can enhance equitable teaching practices and inclusivity? Join the InclusiveExcellence@OSU program for our Fall 2023 Faculty, Food, and Fun to explore these questions alongside your friends and colleagues. Dr. Inara Scott will share the work of OSU’s AI Taskforce in responding to this new frontier in higher education, and facilitate a collaborative discussion of the possibilities and pitfalls of AI in promoting equitable teaching. We will consider how AI can coexist with and complement traditional teaching practices, reshape how we consider mastery, and present novel challenges in combating biases embedded within our disciplines.
