New Windows Images with Office 2016

New Windows images are currently live for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 LTSB. One change I made is I went ahead and replaced Office 2013 with 2016.

If you still haven’t tried out Office 2016, it’s available in the SCCM Software Center for all CN technicians here (open in IE):

https://osu-cm-iis01.oregonstate.edu/CMApplicationCatalog

You can also install it with the following command:

\\software.oregonstate.edu\software\Microsoft Office Suites\Office 2016\Office 2016 – Extracted\setup.exe /adminfile “CS – Office 2016 – Silent Install – x86.MSP”

End-user documentation is available from Microsoft here:

Windows 10 – new default build OS – Monday November 9th

CN colleagues,

Samuel, Bench crew, Jim Galloway, Max Schmidt and others have worked hard to get us ready for Windows 10 build and deployments to customer machines. Many thanks for that hard work!

I am happy to report that the Bench and Endpoint Management Team are ready to start building Windows 10 machines without scratch builds!

What:

Windows 10 is default OS for the following items

– Apple Bootcamp – Windows side

– Any tablet that will support Windows 10

Customers can request Windows 10, as long as the hardware supports it.

When:

Starting Monday November 9th, 2015

Why:

Testing on OSU Enterprise systems (Data Warehouse, Banner, Nolij, etc.) has gone well

To avoid getting behind on versions of Windows

Customers are asking for Windows 10

New devices are already coming with Windows 10

Windows 10 is very similar to Windows 7 so the transition will be easier

A good portion of our staff and machines already use Windows 10

We won’t be able to test every piece of software our customers utilize and need to address those as they come up

 Other details

Patching method – Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB)

Version – Windows 10 Enterprise

What can you expect to help the transition?

  1. Communication to CN customer Local Resource People (LRPs) at least
  2. Documentation on Helpdocs
    1. What is different
    2. Transition guides from MS if available
  3. Windows 10 as a selection in the E-interview system
  4. Internal documentation on ITKnowS
    1. Differences in Windows 10

New Core Migration: Multiple Departments

The following departments have been moved to new core:

Enrollment Management (Kerr + Snell)
Institutional Research
Undergraduate Studies

Cyder/IP change
All workstations and printers…
Moved from: Multiple zones (10.192.98.XXX)
Moved to: zone.cn_studentadmin (10.214.18.56 – 10.214.19.253)

Printer change
Old IP printers were removed from workstations and replaced with new print queues:

Printer address: \\iscs-printq\KAd-500-Ricoh-MP-2851
Printer IP: 10.214.18.229
Printer driver: PCL6 Universal v4.6
Security group: CN_Printers_KAd 500 Ricoh MP 2851

Note: All three departments share this printer. I have the owner listed as Enrollment management.

TSS GPO: Printer Deployment – Enrollment Management

Resolved Issues

  • DIRKSB-OP755 (00:21:9b:81:ef:bd) was documented in the initial walk-through and migrated but the machine was actually moved to Waldo with Academic Programs. This was moved back in Cyder to zone.asc (128.193.18.95 – 128.193.18.253). I contacted the customer but they were unavailable.
  • CSL-46-OP780 (b8:ac:6f:9e:a9:96) appeared to be an old registration and was deleted from Cyder but turned out to be a loaner computer for Salvador Castillo while his current computer is at the build bench. Max Schmidt was able to get this registered in Cyder. Additionally, I added his loaner IP address to the IR-SQL firewall rule so he still has access to the server.

Unresolved Issues

None.

New Core Migration: Registrar’s Office

Better late than never here…the Registrar’s Office was moved to new core on September 23rd.

Cyder/IP change
All workstations and printers…
Moved from: zone.registrar (10.128.154.5 – 10.128.154.252)
Moved to: zone.cn_studentadmin (10.214.18.56 – 10.214.19.253)

Printer change
Old IP printers were removed from workstations and replaced with new print queues:

ONID GPO: TSS – Printer Deployment – Registrar’s Office
TSS GPO: Printer Deployment – Registrar’s Office

Resolved Issues

  • The following computers in Institutional Research were improperly registered in zone.registrar and were moved on accident:
    • CastillS-OP980 – I moved this back the same morning
    • lplagman-IBT510 – I moved this back the same morning
    • VICKERSB-OP7010 – Port actually got flipped and the user was functioning, left alone.
  • IP printers didn’t get removed right at 8am. I created a package in SCCM and deployed it shortly after which succeeded on 34/36 machines.
  • Kiosk machines didn’t get documented in the initial walk-through. Robin had Telecom flip the ports.
  • Rick DeBellis couldn’t print because he’s actually in the Enrollment Management department. I added him to the printer security group and added the printer GPO to his department’s users OU.
  • Transcript printer needed to be added to Banner (KAd-102-Right-Ricoh-MP-3351).

Unresolved Issues

  • Numerous student workers were logging in with ONID accounts and couldn’t print. The current method of delivering print queue printers doesn’t allow for this and the expectation is that student workers have CN student accounts. This isn’t ideal for departments with high turnover and many students so a solution is being worked out.
  • A request was made to change the name of KAd-102-HP-Laserjet-M401DNE to KAd-102-Front-HP-Laserjet-M401DNE.

Changes to Build Bench Build Procedures

Due to reports of build inconsistencies on mac computers. The Build Bench Process has been changed. So what is changing?

  • Macs are moving back to being imaged by Deploy Studio. The process is now essentially a two step process for the basic build.  1: Image. 2: Install casper. I made it as easy and foolproof as I could. With the move to deploy studio, all of the enrollment policies in Casper have been changed so they do not install software automatically. This will make the execution of the quick add package a lot quicker.
  • The builds will no longer include department specific user templates as certain updates have changed the process and now require a complete overhaul to continue it. Which is too much maintenance for something so small.
  • I spoke to Angela, Lucas, Sam and Patrick and Office 2016 for mac is now on the image. Through our testing it has been good, and we feel it is important to get the online archive functionality to our mac users.
  • For macs to be joined to domain: As a reminder, they should only be joined in special circumstances where there are a lot of users using the machine. The machine should only be joined to the ONID domain. You can use the casper policy “CN – Onid – Domain Bind”
  • For Field Techs building macs in their free time. We ask that it be done at the build bench using deploy studio for consistency sake. Using our process completely. Once the rest of CS moves to Milne we can have a couple of ports available for the field techs that can access deploy studio. But as for now all mac computers should be built using the deploy studio process in the Milne 120 build bench.

Also as a reminder: iWork is to be only installed on machines after Late 2013. There is a smart group in casper that indicates whether or not they are eligible for free iWork. If their machine is not in that smart group, the customer must purchase the software from the app store. Under no circumstances should we be installing the software on machines that are not eligible.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to let me know!
