Traditional graduate degree programs play a critical role in helping to develop new skill sets and expertise in a particular field. Professional development programs support students in expanding their professional skill sets and expose them to a multitude of other aspects of a chosen field.
Think of professional development as more of continuous training and education in one’s chosen career. Professional development programs offer resources and opportunities to improve professional knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness.
The Career Development Center (CDC) is an on-campus resource available for free to all Oregon State students. Check out the hyperlink for more information on opportunities to explore. They offer one-on-one appointments with advisors as well as career events and networking opportunities

- Hugh Kearns Workshops – @Hugh Kearns is an internationally recognized speaker, educator and researcher presented five workshops geared towards graduate student success in writing, time management, presentations, and personal confidence.
- Handshake is a portal that can be used to find internships, employers, and jobs. It is also where you can go to register for the career fair, schedule advising appointments, and find workshops to fulfill your professional development dreams
- Aurora is a portal specific to graduate students and their professional development goals
- Vmock is a tool to use to check over your resume/CV and to get individualized feedback
- Standout is a tool for interview preparation
- GoinGlobal is an online database you can use to find internship and career opportunities abroad. The tool also includes an H1-B visa database for international students wishing to work in the U.S. after graduation
- Graduate certificates and minors: there are plenty of certifications and minors to explore on the graduate school’s website. Different colleges offer different programs, so give them a look here. Some of the most commonly pursued by students in CEOAS are listed below:
