Writing Exercise #5

What choices do you make in terms of food/nutrition/product use and consumption that may have an impact on your microbial communities? Consider choices that are intentional and choices that are perhaps non-intentional.

I believe that each and every choice I make regarding food/nutrition/product affects my microbial community. Most what I eat is largely influenced by time and monetary restraints. Every day, I eat two eggs with turkey and cheese, in some form. These dairy products contain lactic acid that have been associated with increased gut microbial diversity. I also eat a lot of beans and rice. I am gluten intolerant, so I do not wheat. My decision to not eat wheat has possibly largely influenced my gut biome. When I was eating gluten, it caused gut dysbiosis, which was improved when I removed gluten from my diet. Low-gluten availability affects the kinds of bacteria that live in my gut, because gluten serves as an energy substrate for several types of bacteria.

I know that eating probiotics is very good for gut health. I have yet to find any probiotics that I enjoy the taste of. I avoid yogurt, kombucha, etc, because I do not like the taste. My gut microbiota would likely be happier/fuller if I was eating probiotics. Unfortunately, I must admit that I am not putting nearly enough energy or resources into maintaining my gut microbiota and keeping it healthy.
