HAILS AND FAREWELLS (extended edition)
First, the HAILS with new faces in OSRAA! Sara Traeger has been hired as a temporary Fiscal Coordinator 1. She will be assisting with the Cash Team and Setup. Initially, her appointment will go through July, and Sara will be sitting in the office near the copy machine with Robin. The first week of July, Kira Bui will be joining CFM as a Cash Team Fiscal Coordinator 1. She has OSU business center experience (UABC) and prior cash experience at another university in Oklahoma. Kira will have Branita’s old office adjacent to Rachel. Please join us in welcoming them both to our OSRAA team!
And on to the farewells, as you have heard, Nancy Collins’ last day in RCOI and OCCD was yesterday. We wish Nancy all the best as she relaxes in to retirement-mode! Additionally, and this one hits close to home for the author…Jane Cigarran’s last day in the RO will be Friday, July 6. I have accepted a position assisting leadership at NuScale Power in Corvallis. It has been a true honor and pleasure to work with all of you over the last 4 1/2 years in the RO, and at OSU for the last 8. I hope we will continue to stay in touch through work and community in the future! I will still be reachable at my ONID address (cigarraj@oregonstate.edu) as I continue my studies in History at OSU. You are wonderful colleagues and wish you nothing but the best in the future. Please don’t be strangers!!

Additionally, Pat Hawk has been selected to receive the prestigious designation of NCURA Distinguished Educator. This designation recognizes exceptional contributions through the ideation, creation and delivery of NCURA’s national/global Research Administration educational offerings. An individual holding the Distinguished Educator designation is one who has had a major impact on multiple educational levels in professional development within NCURA.

OSRAA STAFFING UPDATE
HAIL! Kira Bui will be joining OSRAA’s Cash Team in the Cash and Financial Management Unit. Kira comes to us from UABC, and previously handled cash management at “another OSU”—Oklahoma State University. She will join us July 2.
FAREWELL! Shane Melton will be leaving us to join UABC as a Finance Coordinator. This is a wonderful promotion for Shane, and his last day in the office will be July 3.
FISCAL STAFFING UPDATE
HAIL! The RO Fiscal Office is please to announce Sara Begley will be starting on Monday, June 18th. Sara is our new Academic Wage appointee whose duties include being Research’s HR liaison to the Business Centers and will be providing financial support and coverage while Ying will be on leave. Sara’s work station will be between Kim and Ying’s work station. Sara’s previous work experience includes working in a Business Center here at OSU and her most recent experience includes being a consultant for JD Edwards Human Capital Management. Please join us in welcoming Sara to the Research team!
NEW SCUBA INSTRUCTOR IN THE RO
RO’s Taylor Eaton completed the NAUI Instructor Qualification Program over the weekend, and is now a fully certified scuba Instructor with the National Association of Underwater Instructors. Taylor’s new qualifications will add much needed flexibility to the scientific diving program, allowing for more course offerings and potentially scientific diver training at both Corvallis and Hatfield. Congrats to Taylor!

REMINDER: MANDATORY TRAINING
Oregon State University is launching a series of online training modules for faculty and staff. These trainings address the University’s commitment to ensure a healthy, supportive and safe environment for all faculty, staff and students. The trainings are now available for you to begin via the University’s new learning management system (LMS) – BRIDGE. The training modules include: ethics, mandatory reporting of child abuse, protected leave and information security. Later this spring, additional required trainings modules related to prevention of sexual harassment and misconduct, other forms of prohibited discrimination, and the Americans with Disabilities Act will be launched as the modules for these topics are finalized.

OSU SPINOUTS ‘CLEAN UP’ AT WILLAMETTE ANGEL CONFERENCE
Two clean technology companies affiliated with Oregon State University were among the top finalists at the 2018 Willamette Angel Conference (WAC). Both companies are graduates of the OSU Advantage Accelerator program. “It was great to see two of our graduates gain additional funding as they start to ramp,” said Karl Mundorff, Director of the Accelerator. The Accelerator assists local startup companies in all stages of their growth and supports the regional innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Bend-based Onboard Dynamics received a $100,000 investment. The company offers a low-cost system for natural gas compression for commercial fleet operators. Corvallis-based eChemion received a $75,000 investment. The company provides technology that dramatically enhances the lifespan of grid energy storage batteries. Corvallis-based Wisedoc, also an Accelerator client company, won the Speed Pitch competition. Wisedoc received a $2,500 prize for winning the competition. The company is developing software to help researchers quickly and easily format journal articles for submission. The 2018 Conference raised $495,000 from local angel investors and including Willamette Valley Capital Investors. The WAC also utilizes student interns from Oregon State University to perform due diligence work. This year’s interns included five from OSU: Shanmukh Prasad Challa, Brianna Renee Falsetto, Scott Laughin, Chiara Marzi, and Brett Wilkerson. “We are very proud to partner with the Willamette Angel Conference in providing our student interns a great experiential opportunity to develop their analytical skills and be a true member of the diligence teams,” said Mundorff. This survey is an important part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion and is integral to our efforts to create a welcoming environment at Oregon State University. The survey will remain open until June 6, 2018 and results will be analyzed over summer term by the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID). The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. TAYLOR’S AMAZING ALASKA TRIP
The United States Geological Survey – Alaskan Science Center has been monitoring the recolonization efforts of sea otters in south east Alaska since 2002 when they first started to appear in the area after reaching virtual extinction. The RO’s very own Diving and Saftey maverick, Taylor Eaton, was invited to join them in this effort because Oregon State University and USGS have a well-established collaborative research partnership and they needed additional personal for this field project. The focus of this ongoing long term ecological monitoring project is to study sea otter effects on shallow benthic communities in Glacier Bay National Park. Taylor’s task was to provide ship operation support and to conduct subtidal benthic monitoring surveys using SCUBA to assess the invertebrate and algal community structure in Glacier Bay and what effects increasing sea otter population might have on those communities. NSF AUDIT UPDATE
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of the Inspector General has notified Oregon State University that it will be performing an incurred cost audit of awards issued to OSU and filed during the audit period beginning March 1, 2015 through February 28, 2018. It is important to note that audits of this nature routinely are performed at major research institutions around the country, including our peer land grant universities. OSRAA is teaming with Business Affairs and Audit Services on this. If you receive questions or have any of your own, please direct them to Pat Hawk.

OSU Historian and Center for the Humanities Director, Chris Nichols gave a stellar speech on the critical importance of historical knowledge to a sold-out crowd of more than 3,000 people in Portland’s Keller Auditorium on April 21.
