Black Lives Matter in Academic Spaces – Three Lessons in Critical Literacy

Oregon State CLA presents a talk by Dr. Vershawn Ashanti Young, a linguistic researcher and author, on code-switching and black language appropriation in academia. The talk is virtual and public, next Thursday (Feb 24th) from 12pm – 1:30pm. Several PhIS members are attending and we want to encourage as many people as possible to come too! If you can’t make this event, there are many events organized by various OSU organizations that are acknowledging and celebrating Black History Month – we encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to learn and reflect.

Graduate students are here to help!

This Friday (November 19th)  PhIS will be hosting an informal open ‘forum’ this Friday for undergrads to ask grad students questions. From 4pm to 5pm (right before SPS game night!), a few physics graduate students have volunteered their time to answer any questions you have. This is an opportunity to ask your questions in a group to a ‘panel,’ OR grab a one on one consultation with a grad student!

This is your hour to find out:

  • How did you decide on a grad program?
  • What advice do you have for _ type of research?
  • What experiences have you had resolving conflicts in your work / research group?
  • Can you give me feedback on part of my school / internship application?
  • How about this research presentation I’m working on?
  • How did you get funding?
  • What do you wish you knew about being a grad student / physicist earlier?
  • Did you ever have any doubts about going to grad school?
  • And anything else you are curious about!

Please join our email list for more information about the location and the remote options. We hope to see you there!

About Us

Physicists for Inclusion in Science (“PhIS”, pronounced “fizz”) grew out the “Women in Physics” group. We support members of underrepresented groups as they pursue their careers. The group meets several times a term for discussion and to organize events and activities. The group consists of students, faculty and staff in the Physics department, alumni, and other physicists on campus or in the community.

Mission Statement

Currently, only 20% of physics degrees are held by women. Similarly, approximately 11% of Bachelor’s degrees and 7% of PhDs are held by underrepresented minorities in physics. We aim to significantly increase the number of female and underrepresented minority physics majors on campus by providing an inclusive community, professional development opportunities, and mentorship for any woman or minority interested in physics.

2019/20 Group Photo

If you have an idea for a project, event, or anything else that you want to see PhIS take on, we’d love to hear from you! Please follow this link to our poll for sharing your ideas with us.
