I have always wanted to work in a new country, I have thought of it as a challenge that would be rewarding and scary. My focus has always been on England, Scotland, or Ireland. I choose them due to having far fewer cultural bearers for me due to using the same language and many of the same mentalities such as being an individualist country. While it sounds like a great romanticized idea of living in another country, It would take a great deal of consideration for me to make the jump for such a large move What kind of help would they provide my spouse to acclimate to the change? Would they help him find another job, provide schooling to change over certifications to another country and would they help connect us to other expats to help us build a community? Would they provide training on cultural norms? While the U.K. has many similarities there are some cultural shifts that would need to take place and having training on how this would be beneficial. Is the company going to set me up with HR to help me know how to approach change in the office? I think the key here is that I would be provided support to make the shift to another county and given the tools to be successful. Without this, I would have to decline the offer knowing that without support that I would not be as successful as I could be. While it would be tempting to make the change, I don’t think it would personally be the best choice for my career long haul without the support needed to be successful in and out of work in a new country.
