THIS WEEK! Honors College Winter Wellness Series 
Winter in Oregon can be tough, with the colder, darker, and rainier days making it harder to feel good. The Honors College wants to support you not just in your academic success, but in your wellness, too. This term, the HC will be hosting a variety of events that encourage students to encourage students to seek out many opportunities to care for themselves. The first event in this series will be in week 2! 
Week 2 event: Planting Connections
To kick off the term, Honors College students are invited to come grab a succulent, paint their own plant pot, and meet new HC students! All supplies, as well as light snacks and drinks, will be provided for students. Questions about this program and accommodation requests can be directed to Taylor Maki (makit@oregonstate.edu). We look forward to connecting with you and bringing a little sunshine to the winter term! 

THIS WEEK! Honors College Faculty Research Showcases
Mark your calendars for the Honors College Faculty Research Showcases this winter!
The first showcase, featuring the College of Health, College of Pharmacy, College of Science and College of Veterinary Sciences, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 4-5:30 p.m. PT in LInC 100 and over. Corvallis students are expected to attend in person.

The second showcase, featuring the College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and College of Forestry, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. PT in LInC 100 and over Zoom. Corvallis students are expected to attend in person.

HC Faculty Research Showcases are opportunities to learn more about research, scholarship and creative work at Oregon State. Students can connect with faculty members and discover ways to get involved in projects that may lead to an honors thesis. Showcases are open to all honors students, including those who aren’t ready to begin a thesis. NEW! HC Juniors and Seniors: Participate in Online vs. In-Person Lab Study
Researchers in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering and the School of Psychological Science at OSU are conducting a study investigating the effectiveness of online and in-person lab environments for engineering education. In this study you will be asked to learn about programmable logic control (PLC) and complete an associated lab exercise. Participation includes a time commitment of 6-10 hours spread over a 2-week period during the first three weeks of Winter term, and a compensation of $20 per hour of participation (up to $200 total). To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, fluent in English, and a junior- or senior-level undergraduate engineering student. All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation with Paris Hirschberg, ’07, on Tuesday, January 20 from noon-12:50 p.m. PT in LInC 345 and over Zoom. Dean and Friends events are unique to the Honors College and are opportunities for current honors students to connect with alumni and other external supporters about different career paths and professional topics. For this Dean and Friends event, Paris will lead a discussion on the theme, “Careers in Manufacturing and Working Internationally.” For those attending this event in person, lunch will be provided, and space is limited. NEW! Volunteer for OSU’s largest and longest-running day of service, honoring Dr. King’s legacy by fostering peace and community through service
Come together to serve lunch for the MLK Day of Service participants! Following many cultural traditions, service through food is a time-honored tradition that brings communities together. This project will have folks serve lunch to the participants of other service projects and help clean up the kitchen after service!
If Honors College students are interested in volunteering for this project, they can register at beav.es/hcserve. Spots are limited! Register today and no later than Jan. 23.

Dean and Friends events are unique to the Honors College and are opportunities for current honors students to connect with alumni and other external supporters about different career paths and professional topics. For this Dean and Friends event, William will lead a discussion on the theme, “Balancing Values and Career Goals.” For those attending this event in person, coffee and snacks will be provided, and space is limited. Thesis Navigator Drop-In hours in the SLUG and on Zoom:
HC Thesis Resource Navigators will be hosting drop-in hours in the SLUG and on Zoom for any questions you might have regarding your thesis. If you’re unsure where to begin, having trouble identifying mentors to connect with, or not sure how to write your Thesis Proposal (among other things), our navigators are here to guide you in the right direction. If you are unable to make it to any of their drop-in sessions, feel free to reach out to them directly by completing the Request a Navigator webform. Honors College Academic Advising Canvas Page

This is a great resource where you can discover anything from instructions on finding honors courses to navigating the thesis process after you’ve completed the HC 408 Stage 1 thesis class. For students ready for the next steps with their thesis, this page can help with finding a thesis mentor, registering for your thesis credits, submitting your proposal and so much more.

Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU App
Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU is an app that gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Faculty-led Program in London
Join OSU’s faculty-led program, Live, Learn, Work, and Play: The Social Determinants of Health in London from June 28-July 13, 2026. Students will learn about health equity from community leaders, health care providers, educators, advocates, and engineers who work to create London’s social, economic, and built environments. Earn 6 credits (H 399/H 599) and experiential learning or Honors College Foundations credit. Open to undergraduates (any major/college) and MPH students. Applications are due February 1, 2026. Visit France with the HC
Based in Lyon, France, this 17-day program is led by OSU faculty and runs from June 16 to July 2, 2026. Honors College Emergency Grant
The Honors College Emergency Grant supports students facing unexpected expenses related to housing and/or meals, course materials or equipment for a class, healthcare and/or mental healthcare costs, vehicle repairs necessary for travel to class, and/or travel home for family emergencies. Grants are for up to $500, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Only expenses related to the above list are eligible for emergency grant support, per university policy. Tuition or other general costs of enrollment are not eligible for funding.

HC Experiential Learning Scholarship
The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750. See here for additional information. Applications can be submitted through ScholarDollars and evaluated on a rolling basis.

NEW! Internship at Innovation Lab at Hatfield Marine Science Center
The Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Innovation Lab Scholarship supports Oregon State University undergraduate students in their second year or more of study who are participating in a paid internship with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Innovation Lab (iLab) in Newport, Oregon. Recipients will be students in any college at Oregon State University who are interested in developing the programs and operations of the HMSC iLab. Students are considered for both the internship and the scholarship based on their application for the scholarship. Applications are due Friday, Jan. 23rd. These internships are sponsored in full by the Roundhouse Foundation. For more details and to apply, click here.

Research Assistants Wanted: Cognition and Action in Real and Virtual Environments
Kisten Macuga, Associate Professor in the School of Psychological Science, is seeking two honors research assistants for the CARVE lab. Learn more about the CARVE Lab here: “We study sensory perception, decision-making, learning, and human-computer interaction in real-world contexts (e.g., driving, sports, navigation).” Apply to the position here.

Designing and Characterizing Acoustic Metamaterials – Student Research Opportunity
Dr. Shuai Wu (College of Engineering) is seeking students interested in hands-on research designing and testing active metamaterials that control acoustic waves. Students will help build an acoustic measurement setup, conduct characterization experiments, and verify results through finite element simulations. Phytochemical Research in Pasture‑Based Dairy Systems
Dr. Serkan Ates (Animal & Rangeland Sciences) is seeking up to two students to join a research project exploring how phytochemicals in pasture forbs can improve sustainability, animal health, and methane reduction in dairy systems. Students will gain hands-on experience identifying key plant species, conducting chemical analyses of bioactive compounds, and measuring methane emissions using both laboratory and field methods. This interdisciplinary work offers valuable training in agronomy, animal science, and environmental sustainability. The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Academic Success Center Online Workshops

Workshops are a great way to improve your writing, create better study habits, or learn a new skill. This list of online workshops is offered as a resource to succeed on campus:

Every fall, winter and spring, the Academic Success Center offer an online workshop series on academic success topics. Workshops are held weeks 2 through 10 and cover a variety of topics to support you in your learning and study at OSU.

The Writing Center in the Valley Library offers workshops as an opportunity to engage with other students around writing topics. All workshops are 50 minutes long and take place via Zoom

HC Resources

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy.
