THIS WEEK! Fall Undergraduate Research Showcases
Curious about what Honors College students are researching? Join us for the HC Undergraduate Research Showcases — dynamic online events where students present their thesis research in short, lightning-style talks. These showcases offer a glimpse into the wide range of topics our students explore and are a great way to get inspired, learn about research opportunities and connect with fellow students and faculty. After the presentations, stick around for breakout rooms with Q&A and conversation. All students, faculty, families and friends are welcome! The fall showcases will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29 and Monday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. PT via Zoom. RSVP: beav.es/xu9

Honors College Family Weekend Bowling Night
Roll on into Famliy Weekend with the Honors College for family bowling night! On Friday, Nov. 7 from 5-7 p.m., HC students are encouraged to bring their families to MU Lanes and Games for a fun evening. The cost is free for students and their family members. If students are interested in attending, you will need to sign up at beav.es/xRi.

Honors College Dean and Friends Coffee Conversation – Mentors, serendipity, windows of opportunity, collaborations and credibility: Key ingredients for successful careers in research with George Kennedy, ’70

All honors students are invited to a Dean and Friends Conversation on Thurs, Nov 6 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. in LInC 345 (or over Zoom) with Dr. George Kennedy, ’70, on “Mentors, serendipity, windows of opportunity, collaborations and credibility: Key ingredients for successful careers in research.” Dr. Kennedy is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Agriculture in the North Carolina State University Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. He turned his youthful fascination with biology and science, which he developed growing up o the south shore of Long Island, fishing and exploring coastal marshes and woodlots, into a career researching the ecology and management of insect pests of agricultural crops, insect-plant interactions, and the epidemiology and management of insect-vectored plant viruses. He received his B.S. in entomology from Oregon State and his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and he has authored or co-authored over 240 research publications and co-edited 5 books. Honors College Alumni Pathways Conversation – Research pathways in biomedicine with Chelsea Parker Harp, ’12
All honors students are invited to meet over Zoom with HC alum Chelsea Parker Harp, ’12, on Mon, Nov 11 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. Pacific Time over Zoom to learn more about her pathway into biomedical research. Chelsea received her H.B.S. in biochemistry and biophysics, with minors in chemistry and philosophy. She then earned a Ph.D. in 2018, studying a model of Multiple Sclerosis to study how different immune cells coordinate and perpetuate autoimmunity in the central nervous system. Chelsea is now a senior scientist at Seismic Tx, working to bring novel biologic therapies to the clinic for autoimmunity indications. Before this, she was a biology project representative for one of two lead assets targeting inflammatory pathways at Montai Health, a Flagship Pioneering Company in Cambridge, MA. She has also worked in the multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation research unity at Biogen, where she led a partnered program for PROTAC therapy targeting CNS resident inflammation. NEW! Honors College Dean and Friends Coffee Conversation – Leadership and Communication, with Tom Harvey
All honors students are invited to a Dean and Friends Conversation on Friday, November 14th from 3:00-3:50 p.m. in LInC 343 (or over Zoom) on “Cross-Functional Team Leadership and Communication,” with Tom Harvey. Tom is the parent of a current Honors College student and is a Boeing Designated Expert in high-pressure systems integration in the Boeing Environmental Control System Design Center, where he leads and builds cross-functional teams to resolve high-priority technical issues and initiatives. He has his B.S. in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington, focusing on management of technology programs. Tom has been with the Boeing Company since 1997 in a variety of roles and is a certified Project Management Professional and Boeing Lean Leader for Value Stream Mapping. For those attending this Dean and Friends event in person, coffee and snacks will be provided, and space is limited. RSVP for the event here.

WEEKLY! HCSA Meeting
Join the Honors College Association (HCSA) for weekly club meetings! HCSA is a student-led club that plans activities for Honors College students. HCSA puts together social events, academic events, professional development events, and more. Join HCSA and help make great events happen! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 268.

If you are an Ecampus student and you are ever interested in attending virtually, please email HCSA at honorshcsa@oregonstate.edu or contact the Honors College office directly for more information and to get a zoom link. If you see an HCSA event that you would like to participate in from afar, if we have advance notice we can try to send you program supplies/items to join.

THIS WEEK! Help Create a Mural for the SLUG
Want to express your creativity? Join HC Student Designer Esme in decorating the SLUG chalkboard mural. Starting week 1, drop in between Noon–1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays to help bring the mural to life! Please contact Taylor Maki with any questions: taylor.maki@oregonstate.edu. 

Interested in Public Policy and Advocacy? Apply for University Legislative Scholars!
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) program is a year-long experiential learning opportunity for students passionate about public policy, advocacy, and civic engagement. Offered Fall, Winter, and Spring, this in-person course allows students to: Engage directly with state and federal policy issues, learn how to advocate effectively in the Oregon legislative process and earn 2 credits per term that count toward your major. Ideal for 3rd and 4th year students, this program requires an application and offers a unique chance to connect classroom learning with real-world impact. Apply now and be part of shaping policy in Oregon.

NEW & WEEKLY! Cedar in the SLUG!

This is a great resource where you can discover anything from instructions on finding honors courses to navigating the thesis process after you’ve completed the HC 408 Stage 1 thesis class. For students ready for the next steps with their thesis, this page can help with finding a thesis mentor, registering for your thesis credits, submitting your proposal and so much more.

Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU App
Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU is an app that gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Students can download the Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU and learn more about the service here. For questions, please contact Bonnie Hemrick the Director of Mental Health Promotion.

Graduate Program in Biomedical Research at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus
The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) is a first-year, interdisciplinary program serving seven degree programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). Students will graduate with a PhD from one of the participating programs to prepare them for careers in biomedical sciences. OU Health Sciences Center is one of only a few comprehensive academic health centers in the nation. Internationally prominent faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and nearly $200 million in external funding combine to make GPiBS the leader in graduate education and research in Oklahoma. The application for the 2026 GPiBS class opened on August 1st, 2025 with a priority deadline of December 1st, 2025. OUHSC is a comprehensive medical campus home to cutting edge research facilities and top-tier scientists. Interested students can utilize the GPiBS website or reach out at GPIBS@ouhsc.edu for additional information or questions.

Summer Research for Biomedical Undergrads at OUHSC
The Graduate College at OU Health Sciences hosts five Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURP) aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health-related sciences. SURP look forward to continuing 5 programs next summer (CURE, U-CARE, NARCH, OK-INBRE, and SURE). The SURP applications will open in November with a deadline of January 31st, 2026. THIS WEEK! Halloween Party
The Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center is hosting a Halloween party at the center on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 5 – 7 p.m. We will be having activities like: Mini pumpkin painting, cookie decoration and bracelet making. Additionally we will have great music and vibes. All are welcome to this event.

THIS WEEK! Wild Rockies Field Institute General Information Session
Interested in taking your learning in the field, backpacking through the Rocky Mountain West while earning college credit? The Wild Rockies Field Institute (WRFI) is an academic field program that offers undergraduate students opportunities to earn upper-division college credit while backpacking, biking, hiking, and kayaking across landscapes of the Rocky Mountain West. Join WRFI for a general information session on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 4-5 p.m. at Peavy Forestry Center. WEEKLY! Beavers Belong Peer Support Groups
The Beavers Belong Support Network is offering six peer support groups this year for undergraduates, graduate students, students with disabilities, international students, and more. Groups meet weekly starting Week 1, covering topics like adjusting to college, balancing academics, financial stress, and building connections. See full details, schedules, and join the email list. All students are welcome to attend any group!

WEEKLY! International CommuniTea Hour
Come to SEC 112 every Wednesday from 4-5:30 p.m. for a place of community for and with international students. Free coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snacks from around the world! Funded by ASOSU and Student Experinces and Enagement.

Truckin’ Tuesdays at the Memorial Union
Truckin’ Tuesday is community event hosted by the Memorial Union Activities Team focused on bringing different types of foods to campus through food trucks! Most Tuesday’s there will be a variety of trucks next to the MU Quad open to students, staff, and the public. This is a chance for people of all ages on the OSU campus to try new foods, support local businesses, and add a little bit of sparkle to their Tuesdays.

Students: Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. “Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch or are low on money, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area cabinets and freezer. *Note: We have a limited supply of food – please only take what you actually need so there is enough for everyone. Thanks!

• Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday – Closed
• Sunday – 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
