A Welcome from Dean Doolen:

All of us here in the Honors College are excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to support you in making the most of your time at Oregon State University and in the HC. Whether you are new to the honors community or returning, Honors College advisors and staff members are here to help you connect with everything OSU has to offer.

This weekly Monday Message email will keep you informed about upcoming activities and opportunities, and I encourage you to engage in and explore whatever is of interest to you – everyone in the honors community is welcome!

If you haven’t already done so, please also download the OSU Events app, created by and for Honors College students to keep track of HC activities and resources, register for events and set reminders. The app makes it easy to stay organized and engaged with campus opportunities. Students can find it by searching “OSU Events” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. 

If you have any questions or face any challenges, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the Honors College staff or faculty members. Each of us on the HC team is committed to your success and is ready to support you, however we can. I look forward to everything that we can achieve this year together.

HC Announcements & Events 

TODAY! Join the HC for New Student Processional and Convocation!
As part of OSU’s Connect programming, students will be participating in the New Student Processional, Convocation, the Orange and Black Rally, the New Student Picnic, and the Rec Sports Fair! On Mon, Sept. 22 between 2:30 and 8 p.m., HC students are heavily encouraged to walk with the Honors College for the New Student Processional, as you wont have a chance to do this for graduation! To minimize confusion on where to meet, HC students are asked to meet outside the Learning Innovation Center (LINC) Lawn at 2:30 p.m., and then HC staff will get everyone where they need to be for these events.

After the processional and Convocation, students will be taken to Reser Stadium for the Orange and Black Rally and the New Student Picnic. From dinner, students can then choose to participate in the Rec Sports fair at Student Legacy Park, if interested. Questions can either be directed to taylor.maki@oregonstate.edu or to the Office of New Student Onboarding at newstudents@oregonstate.edu.

TODAY! Summer Read Discussion
All Honors College students have been asked to read I Never Thought of it That Way: How to have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times by Mónica Guzmán. Students will then need to sign up for a discussion session, taking place either on Sept. 22 or 23. Students should not sign up for a discussion that occurs during their FORTE schedule. PLEASE NOTE: September 23 is Rosh Hashanah. If you are a student who observes this holiday, please sign up for a discussion group on Mon, Sept 22. TOMORROW! Ecampus Meet and Greet
Honors College Ecampus students are invited to participate in a virtual meet and greet where they will meet fellow HC Ecampus students and HC staff! There will be a Meet and Greet on Tues, Sept. 23, both after Ecampus summer read discussions. Connect with other dedicated Ecampus students and learn more about how to stay connected and engaged from anywhere! UPCOMING! Honors College Dean and Friends Lunch Conversation – Combining a career in biomedical research and clinical medicine with Keith Hazelton, ’02
All honors students are invited to the first Dean and Friends Conversation of the new academic year on Tues, Oct. 7 from noon-12:50 p.m. in MU 208 (or over Zoom). Dean and Friends events are unique to the Honors College and are opportunities for current honors students to connect with alumni and other external supporters about different career paths and professional topics. At each session, a guest will share details of their background and expertise and then answer questions. For this first event, Keith Hazelton, ’02, will discuss his careers spanning biomedical research and clinical medicine. Keith grew up in Corvallis, spending summers working in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State. He ended up earning his honors degree in that field and then took research positions following graduating at Oregon Health and Science University and at the Rockefeller University in New York City. He received a combined M.D./Ph.D.at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, studying malaria biochemistry and novel therapeutic candidates. Since medical school, Keith became certified in general pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric transplant hepatology, while continuing microbiology research. He is now a transplant hepatologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, while continuing his research work. Join the conversation by RSVPing here. UPCOMING! Honors College Alumni Pathways Conversation – Research pathways from computer and electrical engineering to bioengineering with Kevin Bishop, ’18
All honors students are invited to meet over Zoom with HC alum Kevin Bishop, ’18, to learn more about his pathway into bioengineering research on Tues, Oct. 21 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. Pacific Time. Kevin earned his honors degree in electrical and computer engineering. After spending a gap year working as a research technician at Washington University in St. Louis, Kevin completed his Ph.D. in bioengineering at the University of Washington. He is now a postdoctoral associate at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where he is developing methods to understand the function of genes at large scale using high-throughput microscopy. Aside from research, Kevin is passionate about science communication, teaching science communication skills to fellow trainees and others in the scientific community. During this session, Kevin will share his experience and answer questions. RSVP to get the Zoom link here!

WEEKLY! HCSA Meeting
Join the Honors College Association (HCSA) for weekly club meetings! HCSA is a student-led club that plans activities for Honors College students. HCSA puts together social events, academic events, professional development events, and more. Join HCSA and help make great events happen! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 268.

If you see an HCSA event that you would like to participate in from afar, if we have advance notice we can try to send you program supplies/items to join.

Don’t forget to check out the SLUG (Honors College Student Learning Center)! Located on the 3rd floor of the LInC in room 340, the SLUG offers study spaces, free printing and scanning, a kitchenette, white boards, resources, and more! Whether you’re looking for a place to meet other HC students or spend time studying, the SLUG is a great place to do both!

THIS WEEK! Help Create a Mural for the SLUG
Want to express your creativity? Join HC Student Designer Esme in decorating the SLUG chalkboard mural. Drop in between 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays to help bring the mural to life! Please contact Taylor Maki with any questions: taylor.maki@oregonstate.edu. 

NEW! Interested in Public Policy and Advocacy? Apply for University Legislative Scholars!
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) program is a year-long experiential learning opportunity for students passionate about public policy, advocacy, and civic engagement. Offered Fall, Winter, and Spring, this in-person course allows students to: Engage directly with state and federal policy issues, learn how to advocate effectively in the Oregon legislative process and earn 2 credits per term that count toward your major. Ideal for 3rd and 4th year students, this program requires an application and offers a unique chance to connect classroom learning with real-world impact. Apply now and be part of shaping policy in Oregon.

NEW! Fall Fest
Join other HC students and staff in celebrating a new year at the HC Fall Fest on Fri, Oct. 10 from 4-6p.m. on the LInC lawn. We will have inflatable adventure course, lawn games, and prizes. There will be cotton candy and other carnival foods. Grab your flannel and join us.

NEW! Faculty Research Showcases
The Faculty Research Showcases are an excellent way to connect with faculty members in College of Engineering, learn more about their research and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Even if you don’t yet feel ready to begin research or are not sure about your interests, attending these events helps you to explore opportunities and make connections. Corvallis students are expected to join in person. Ecampus and Cascade students are encouraged to join via Zoom. Happening on Thurs, Oct. 16 from 4-5:30 in LInC 100 and Zoom.

NEW! Submit Creative Works to WSU Honors Publication, The Palouse Review
Have you ever wanted to submit your work to a literary arts journal? Now is your chance! The Palouse Review, an online Honors publication at Washington State University, is seeking Honors students who would like their work published in their upcoming editions. They publish a wide variety of original work by Honors students, including scholarship, creative writing, visual art, and music. The deadline for submissions is Sun, Oct. 19. Click here for additional details and to submit.

NEW & WEEKLY! Cedar in the SLUG!

Welcome back HC Beavs!!! – and a special welcome to our newest HC Beavs!!!

The HC Academic Advising Corner in the Monday Message will be a place to receive tips from HC Academic Advisors to help guide you through your Honors College journey. For Week 0, be sure to log into all of your courses on Canvas and familiarize yourself with the syllabus and course structure. This will also give you the opportunity to see what assignments and projects you have coming up, so you can get organized for success. Friendly reminder for all students to check in with your HC Academic Advisor at least once per academic year.

Thesis Navigator Drop-In hours in the SLUG and on Zoom:
HC Thesis Resource Navigators will be hosting drop-in hours in the SLUG and on Zoom for any questions you might have regarding your thesis. If you’re unsure where to begin, having trouble identifying mentors to connect with, or not sure how to write your Thesis Proposal (among other things), our navigators are here to guide you in the right direction. If you are unable to make it to any of their drop-in sessions, feel free to reach out to them directly by completing the Request a Navigator webform. If you have questions around Stage 4, please reach out to your advisor or to Dewi Roberts, Advising Coordinator and Thesis Support Coordinator for the HC:  dewi.roberts@oregonstate.edu

Honors College Academic Advising Canvas Page
All HC students have access to the Honors College Academic Advising Canvas Page. This is a great resource where you can discover anything from instructions on finding honors courses to navigating the thesis process after you’ve completed the HC 408 Stage 1 thesis class. For students ready for the next steps with their thesis, this page can help with finding a thesis mentor, registering for your thesis credits, submitting your proposal and so much more.

Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU App
Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU is an app that gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Students can download the Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU and learn more about the service here. For questions, please contact Bonnie Hemrick the Director of Mental Health Promotion.

Theatre in Ashland Seminar (HC 407)
The honors Theatre in Ashland Seminar (HC 407) includes a weekend trip Oct 3–5, with a pre-trip meeting Sept 29 and a post-trip meeting Oct 27. Along with attending performances (and possibly pre-show discussions or talkbacks), students will reflect through journal responses and create a presentation that reimagines the material in a new way — whether by performing a scene, re-writing one, analyzing a character, exploring historical context, or developing a fresh design concept. Wilderness First Aid (PAC 325H) 
This Fall, honors students can gain hands-on skills in emergency care through Wilderness First Aid (PAC 325H). This one-credit course covers anatomy, physiology, injury assessment, short-term and long-term care, small-group rescues and evacuation planning in non-urban settings. Class meets Wednesdays 2–3:50 p.m. and includes a required field trip on Nov 15 from 8 a.m.–4:50 p.m. The $200 course fees can be offset with the Honors College Experiential Scholarship! Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact (DSI 415H)
Still looking for an Honors thesis topic? Juniors and seniors can explore potential projects through DSI 415H: Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact, offered this fall. In this course, students work in teams on community-driven design projects with real-world impact in areas such as climate resilience, sustainability, accessible clothing, inclusive design, food systems, and community well-being. Many Honors students have used this course to launch their thesis, often with faculty sponsors who later serve as mentors. Register with CRN 18310 : beav.es/xMU. Questions? Murder, Mayhem, and Makeup: Lady Detectives on Page and Screen (HC 407)
From Agatha Christie”s Miss Marple to Kristen Bell”s Veronica Mars, women have solved some of the dastardliest crimes of the detective genre both on the page and on the screen. We will look at a variety of texts and films featuring lady detectives (some very ladylike indeed, some decidedly not) to examine the cross-sections between gender and genre. How do these detectives use their performance of gender to solve mysteries? How do these stories challenge, reinforce, and/or complicate traditional notions of gender and crime? NEW! Graduate Program in Biomedical Research at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus
The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) is a first-year, interdisciplinary program serving seven degree programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). Students will graduate with a PhD from one of the participating programs to prepare them for careers in biomedical sciences. OU Health Sciences Center is one of only a few comprehensive academic health centers in the nation. Internationally prominent faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and nearly $200 million in external funding combine to make GPiBS the leader in graduate education and research in Oklahoma. The application for the 2026 GPiBS class opened on August 1st, 2025 with a priority deadline of December 1st, 2025. OUHSC is a comprehensive medical campus home to cutting edge research facilities and top-tier scientists. NEW! Summer Research for Biomedical Undergrads at OUHSC
The Graduate College at OU Health Sciences hosts five Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURP) aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health-related sciences. SURP look forward to continuing 5 programs next summer (CURE, U-CARE, NARCH, OK-INBRE, and SURE). The SURP applications will open in November with a deadline of January 31st, 2026. THIS WEEK! Beaver Community Fair
The annual Beaver Community Fair draws  the OSU and greater Corvallis communities together to celebrate the start of the academic year. Over two hundred different booths representing OSU organizations and local businesses gather to connect others with services, products and involvement opportunities on campus and off. Come join us on Fri, Sept. 26 from 12-4 p.m. in the SEC Plaza and the MU Quad. 

WEEKLY! International CommuniTea Hour
Come to SEC 112 every Wednesday from 4-5:30 p.m. for a place of community for and with international students. Free coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snacks from around the world! Funded by ASOSU and Student Experinces and Enagement.Truckin’ Tuesdays at the Memorial Union
Truckin’ Tuesday is community event hosted by the Memorial Union Activities Team focused on bringing different types of foods to campus through food trucks! Most Tuesday’s there will be a variety of trucks next to the MU Quad open to students, staff, and the public. This is a chance for people of all ages on the OSU campus to try new foods, support local businesses, and add a little bit of sparkle to their Tuesdays.

Students: Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. The HC is currently accepting nominations for students to feature in our student spotlight series. If you know of a student who you think deserves recognition submit their name and the reason for the nomination here.

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:

• Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday – noon to 6 p.m.
• Sunday – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

These resources are available throughout the term.
