THIS WEEK! Preparing for Success in High Pressure Projects” Dean and Friends Conversation with Rich Smith, ’85

All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation with Rich Smith, ’85, on Wed. Feb. 12 from 4:00-4:50 p.m. PST in LInC 343 and over Zoom. Honors College Dean and Friends conversations are opportunities for honors students to connect with Oregon State University alumni and friends in an informal setting and learn more about professional pathways and issues. All members of the Honors College community are invited to join Honors College Dean Toni Doolen for the annual State of the Honors College presentation on Wed, Mar. 5 from noon-1:00 p.m. PST over Zoom. During this event, Dean Doolen will provide updates about the college’s progress toward its strategic goals and answer questions. RSVP here.
 

Submit Creative Works to WSU Honors Publication, The Palouse Review
Have you ever wanted to submit your work to a literary arts journal? Now is your chance! The Palouse Review, an online Honors publication at Washington State University, is seeking Honors students who would like their work published in their upcoming editions. They publish a wide variety of original work by Honors students, including scholarship, creative writing, visual art, and music. The deadline for submissions is Mar. 23Click here for additional details and to submit.

Submit Creative Works to the NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creativity Activity
UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creativity Activity welcomes your research and creative submissions before June 1. UReCA is sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council, and is currently managed, edited and produced by a team of twenty-nine undergraduate students from each of the NCHC regions and a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Dean and Friends Conversation – Careers in Education, from Classroom to Administration
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation about careers in education, from classroom to administration, with Honors College alum Kristina Holton, ’04, on Wed Mar. 5, from 4-5 p.m. PST. Kristina received her H.B.S. in mathematics and has also received an M.S. in mathematics educations and an Ed.D. in community college leadership, all from Oregon State University. She began her careers as a math teacher and instructional coach in K-12 education and then shifted to teaching at the community college level. She has since transitioned into administration, and she is currently the Dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Linn-Benton Community College. At his event, she will share her career journey and answer questions about teaching at both K-12 and college levels and about shifting from teaching to administration. RSVP at beav.es/GAS or on the HC app.

Study Abroad

NEW TOMORROW! Intersections of Biodiversity and Buddhist Cultures in Nepal (Virtual info session)
Join faculty leaders Dee Denver and Rory McDonnell to learn more about this 8-week, 14-credit, faculty-led program in Nepal from Oct. 15th-Nov. 17th, 2025. During this program, students will investigate a series of biology based questions while immersed in Nepal’s Himalayan ecosystems and cultures. As a world leader in nature conservation efforts, Nepal has developed innovative management strategies that integrate social, cultural, and environmental approaches to balancing the needs of wildlife and humans. Students will investigate how biodiversity and Buddhist cultures come together through an immersive experience in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area of the Himalayas. Join an info session for this program on Zoom on Tues, Feb. 11.

Keep Calm and Carry On: The HC is Going to London!
Dates: August 17 – September 6, 2025
Application Deadline: Sat. Mar. 15, 2025
Earn 4 baccalaureate core credits and 2 colloquium credits while exploring London with OSU faculty. The 2025 Honors College London Experience offers classroom learning combined with excursions to iconic sites like the British Museum, Tower of London, and Westminster Abbey. THIS WEEK! Application Now Open for 2025 Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship
Applications are being accepted for the 2025 Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship! The scholarship honors and recognizes OSU undergraduates who are community engaged leaders actively involved in activities beyond course work and who have demonstrated that they are committed to advancing a more caring, equitable, and socially just OSU and/or local community. Apply via Scholar Dollars bySat. Feb. 15. Six (6) students will be awarded a one-time scholarship in the amount of $2,000. Students can learn more about scholarship eligibility, evaluation criteria, and application instructions here or contact Piper Geniza (piper.geniza@osualum.com) for more information.

Funded Opportunity for Undergrads through Oregon Sea Grant
The Oregon Sea Grant Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the Summer Scholars Program, a paid 10-week program that places undergraduate students and students that graduated in the 2024-2025 academic year with a variety of Oregon based host organizations (Tribal, public agency, non-profit, non-governmental). Sites include in-person and remote opportunities. Students from around the country, and international students, are welcome to apply. Applications must be submitted by Mon.Feb. 17. Applicants can find additional resources and support materials on the OSG Application Resources page. Honors College Emergency Grant
The Honors College Emergency Grant supports students facing unexpected expenses, including housing, meals, course materials, healthcare, vehicle repairs, and travel for family emergencies. Grants are up to $500 per term, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Honors College differential tuition is not covered.

HC Experiential Learning Scholarship
The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750. See here for additional information. Applications can be submitted through ScholarDollars and evaluated on a rolling basis.

Looking for a meaningful way to get involved this winter? Join us for the Winter Term Blood Drive, happening Feb. 10-13! Did you know that a single blood donation can save up to three lives? The Engineering Connections Fair is a targeted student engagement opportunity! Engineering students from all levels (First year-PhD) are invited, creating a broad audience. Those planning to attend the 2025 Winter Engineering Connections Virtual Fair on Wed, Feb. 12 are encouraged to join a virtual fair preparation workshop TODAYFeb. 10 at 5 p.m. on Zoom, where you can learn more about the event’s organization, preparation strategies and employer expectations.

NEW THIS WEEK! Love Through Multiple Perspectives
In this community dialogue, we will be focusing on how we feel and engage with love in our lives through community, family, romance, friendship, and self. Together we will explore how we can make love actionable and present in our everyday lives. The event will take place on Wed., Feb. 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Room 104. We encourage participants to stay for the entire dialogue but you are welcome to come and go as necessary. Please keep in mind that seats are limited.

NEW THIS WEEK! Queer Climb Night
Fri, Feb. 14 from 7 – 9 p.m.Queer Climb Night is part of our affinity climb night series. Each climb night endeavors to create a welcoming and supportive space for folks who may feel intimidated by climbing. Join us to find friends and community while learning how to climb. No experience or registration required. All are welcome!

Truckin’ Tuesdays at the Memorial Union
Truckin’ Tuesday is community event hosted by the Memorial Union Activities Team focused on bringing different types of foods to campus through food trucks! Most Tuesday’s there will be a variety of trucks next to the MU Quad open to students, staff, and the public. This is a chance for people of all ages on the OSU campus to try new foods, support local businesses, and add a little bit of sparkle to their Tuesdays.


Students: Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.

HC Resources

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. Honors College Advising Resources
From guiding you through the thesis process, to monitoring and supporting your honors degree progress, your honors academic advising team is here to help! As a reminder, though you are only required to meet with your Honors College academic advisor once per year, feel free to meet with your HC academic advisor whenever you have questions. Below, we’ll leave you with some tips and resources that should be helpful over the coming terms:

Honors College student learning space
The Honors College student learning space, the SLUG, opens Tuesday, September 24. Located in Learning Innovation Center 340, the SLUG offers students study spaces, snacks and free printing. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For the first weeks, there will be minor renovations in the SLUG.

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:

  • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday – noon to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

These resources are available throughout the term.
